Let me first caveat that I hope this post ages poorly...

That being said, this season is actually worse than most people realize in that in addition to watching a terrible team take the court, we're also watching Pike's career die. I had posted before the season even began that this was going to be the most important season of Pike's career - not just because he had a mega-hyped team with 3 future lottery picks, but because whether he wanted to admit it or not his career would be banking on the outcome.

If things went the way we thought, Pike would finally have that one thing he could lean on to elevate the program year in and year out - namely he could win with one and dones and move players into the NBA as high draft picks. If he does that, I truly believe the flood gates open and we start to be in conversation with a higher caliber recruit each year.

I had feared though if things didn't work out (and there was some concern before the season due to roster construction and the fact that Rutgers is gonna Rutgers), that this would be the end of Pike and the end of the Pike era at Rutgers. There's just no way any top-level recruit comes here - even with connections - after this debacle. It's just too easy for any other coach to look at a recruit and say, "You don't want to go to Rutgers. You'll be miserable. You won't win and you won't develop. Hell, Pike couldn't even win with two lottery picks, and honestly they were lottery picks before they even got to Pike. You could argue he actually stunted their growth."

And the sad part is that they wouldn't be wrong. I bet you RHS is thinking what could've been if Dylan went to Duke.

I like Pike. He's a good dude, but he blew it and he probably knows that. He's too loyal. He too trustworthy. There's no accountability. Hell, B Knight has been in charge of the offense for how many seasons and it's consistently been one of the worst in D1. No chance he'd be running the O if I were coach.

There's no shot that the younger Dercack comes here or any high-ranking recruit for that matter moving forward. Pike will revert back to what he knows. We'll have a lower/middle-of-the-pack team that is gritty and fun to root for, but I don't know if that's enough in this new era. I'd expect Pike to stick around a few more seasons before heading off into the sunset.

I agree with the tragic aspect of this. It's painful to say, but most likely Pike is done here. I think he may leave to salvage his career or just coach at a different level where he is more comfortable. No way he gets more than another year at this rate. He won't get extended and donors won't support him.

High expectations turn out to utter disappointment.Columbia is the only game where the team played at a high level on offense and defense.League competition has resulted in four double digit losses including two at the RAC.The coaching staff has no answers and the players clearly lack motivation and talent to change the status quo.

It’s sad. He’s one of my favorite coaches ever. I know people who know him and he’s the real deal good dude. Honestly I would like for him to have a chance to say f last season and do it his way again in 2025.
I don't think there are ANY folks not rooting for him or respecting his qualities as a person and representative of Rutgers. That is not the point.

Yup, he had a good run but it’s a business and he’s not earning his salary. He’s a stand-up guy so hope he either walks away or we work out a settlement within the next year or so. He’s got to be embarrassed.

Would Pike really want to walk away from a 💩 ton of money?

Also as a competitor, would he really want to leave after his worst season ever?

I'm sure Pike believes in himself and wants a chance to turn it around

Good news is in the portal era you can overturn an entire roster in one season

Bad news is that it'll be tough to recruit after this year, NIL money, and past history of low hit rate on transfers

If I'm Pike, I'm going for long athletes who hustle and play D and finding a rim protector rebounding 5

The path forward no matter what coach s having NIL to assemble the right players and/or keep them in this era.

Sorry but anyone who thinks Pike is done here isn’t thinking logically. The only way he is done is if he quits. I don’t see that happening. He’s under contract with big buyouts the next 2-3 years. Pike is a very good coach and he will get things turned around. The question is when.

I think this years recruiting class was him going back to the length. Grant, Dortch. Next years class also. He still needs a big though, but better to find those in the portal.

Who exactly is this third lottery pick? Other than Ace and Dylan I don't see anyone who could possibly even get a camp tryout.

This is such a debacle that you wonder if the program can ever recover in our lifetime.
Michigan last year went 8-22 and looked uncompetitive in almost all games under Slappy, year 1 new coach and they’re ranked. This is a ridiculous statement. And don’t say “they’re Michigan”, jerseys don’t win games. A real coach does. We need an AD who won’t hire someone based on an interview at a diner

I have said this since Princeton. He has one more chance next year or he’s gone. The backslide momentum from this is too much to overcome.

It’s a multi decade historical flop. You don’t recover from that. Accept it fellas.

We are not Michigan.

Pike's record is mediocre and what has he accomplished making him a good coach? How often has he made the tournament? Exactly what future moves point to improving. Recruiting? Player development? Game day strategy and changes.
I see a nice guy who cheers his players on, but a poor evaluator of talent and needs. I often question his player rotation.
Rutgers HAS made a commitment to Pike.
I will root for Rutgers. I am not optimistic.

I’m in no way saying Pike should be fired. I am saying that he’s dug himself a hole career wise that I don’t think he’ll be able to get out of.

This is an epic failure and pike has to take the blame! This team is a bunch of individual talents that don’t mesh as a team. That is on the coach. Too bad because I really like Pike

People, please get a clue about how a buyout works if you are going to post about it. The buyout is what another team owes us to take him. That would be like Christmas. What we owe him is the entire balance of his contract. Just not that complicated

Next year is going to be even worse. Complete roster turnover with lots of lower end players filling it out. Where and how do things get better here?

Lol exactly and people keep saying "at least 2 more years" the roster will look like some of Stringer's last seasons.

He will need to completely blow up this roster again in 10 weeks and will literally be doing the same thing of adding shitty transfers in that he did this year and last year.

Our fanbase cannot see the forest through the trees.

I love Pike BTW, but this momentum shift he is done barring a miracle.

If we recovered ran the Eddie Jordan era we can recover from anything.

We just may need a new coach and some patience unfortunately.
so we are 2 years away from being 2 years away? Pike could always tell future one and dones that the good news is you won't have to play in the NCAA tourney so you will be well rested for your NBA career.
