Thiam and scholarships

Use your context clues.

the answer is.....you have no idea who's out there that Pikiell views as a good fit for his system. Unless you are have an inside view into Pikiell's plan. You have no idea who Karl Hobbs or Brandin Knight can attract as big name assistants.

You make it sound like we are talking about 1/2 the roster being 5th year transfers.....we are talking about 1 or 2 pieces for only 1 year that can help.....maybe a shooter and a rebounder.

Exactly

Our coaches don't look at stats or read a message board to determine who to go after.

You are talking about pouring over hours of film, visiting the kid, his family, getting a feel if a kid is the right fit, understanding his academic aspirations, his reasons for seeking a grad transfer etc. etc. Then selling him on Rutgers. Lets say it is somewhere between 70-100 hours to properly evaluate and build a relationship with a kid. Fair? And I imagine if that is the path you take you are talking about multiple kids to review not just hope to go "1 for 1", right?

Not saying the staff shouldn't explore these options, but I guess my point is would I rather have the staff spend those hours on the level of kid you get in a grad transfer to Rutgers or spend those hours "getting in" with a 2017 or 2018 kid, his coaches, advisors, family, etc.

Time is not an infinite commodity (well I guess theoretically it is, but our staff's time isn't).

I bet we bring at least one graduate transfer.

I bet we do also. I don't think we bring in four. And I certainly am not expecting our grad transfer to be much more than an Omari Grier-type player. And I thought Grier was a fine player.

Remember....Omari Grier was not the first option. The last staff did not get the guys or near the top of their list...they had to settle for Grier. We should all hope that this better staff of recruiters can get better grad transfers....one or two to ensure we have open spots for 2017.

Nothing wrong with that. It'll make little appreciable difference though.

To the extent there is any difference in the team next year, it'll be mostly due to the coaching. If Pikiell and his staff turn out to be good recruiters, the effects of that will show up in later seasons. But this year's recruiting class was doomed once Eddie went 0 for the fall.

If Bullock and Thiam should sign we will have 4 other scholarships available. I hope we can sign 1 or 2 5th year grad transfers. That would leave us with at least 2 scholarships for 2017 and most likely we will lose at least one player to transfer or some other reason by the end of 2017 so we would probably have at least 3 open scholarships for 2017. That would be fine as far as I am concerned. Maybe we can still bring in at least 2 other guys this spring who are high school, juco players or a foreign player that can really help us this coming season. I would think that with the contacts that Hobbs, Knight, Young & Pikiell have that this might be possible. This might take several weeks or longer so I recommend do not panic if things do not break quickly. We all need some patience. This is often easier said than done.

My concern going forward would be the length of the contracts for Hobbs and Knight. They might be looking for new jobs after a year which would negate their recruiting prowess for Rutgers down the road.

NC State transfers Caleb and Cody Martin told ESPN looking at: Cal, Rutgers, Providence, DePaul, ECU, ODU, UNCW. No visits set yet.
