This should make some posters happy!

With all apologies apparently I've Spanky to thank!

Zak - thanks. Not that I'm not thrilled - I am - but there's other things going on in my life right now that just diminish the importance of something like this in the grand scheme of things.

Much appreciated buddy.

NUTS- while we rarely agreed on a lot of stuff, I saw some of your posts, and hope you are OK. You may remember I had a pretty dismal 2014 with a major health scare and other issues, and 2015 was no picnic, which put other items like my sports fandom in perspective. Hope whatever you are going through gets better. 2014 seems like such a long time ago to me, and I look back and I am able to laugh at what happened and realized how it made me stronger.

Thanks buddy your words are appreciated one day at a time!

Tim Smith is a good guy who cares about the band kids. The band has been steadily growing over the past two years, and it has represented Rutgers at a number of high profile TV events.

I prefer more band music instead of piped in hip hop club mix crap. Leave that stuff for the warm up routine, the after parties and NFL games. I would cut DJ Yoshi's cord right before the pregame show. The musical focus during a college football game should be the band, and the Big 10 is the premiere marching band conference in the country. Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Purdue and even Indiana have amazing bands, but they built those traditions over the course of many years.

I'll let that first paragraph be.

DJ Yoshi only does pregame, and is not responsible for the piped in music during the game.

The band needs to be much bigger, especially in the brass sections. We really need to have a band that doesn't need microphones and the speaker system - which is a crutch we've been using because we can't seem to keep kids in the band more than 1-2 years.

This is a great thing for the kids in the band.mi have no doubt that they will have a better experience moving forward. I don't wish I'll will to Tim Smith and perhaps the year will give him a chance to find something he's better suited to.....but it sure wasn't building a marching band and creating an organization that kids wanted to be a part of. Having moved to the Seattle area we went to a women's softball game at UW as part of my daughters little league team outing. They had a pep band there and they were really good. And they don't need to recruit community college kids. I was so impressed that they were able to field a band like that for Olympic sports. I hope moving forward that Rutgers can find a good director that will also be respected by the music department.....if they do the sky is the limit at Rutgers.

Go to an SC game.

Completely disagree.

In many schools--and in many B1G schools--the band is great source of school spirit and pride.

The band IMHO should be an integral part of the college gameday experience.
Agree agree with Patrick - Haveyou ever seentOSU bank?

In many schools, and certainly in the Big Ten, the marching band is a huge part of the game day experience. Has been for decades.

Is this a good thing? From what i have read here I think yes...

As a former drum corps guy, I fancy I know a bit about field marching etc>(won a national championship years ago)
its time to START some tradition......
I have LOVED the band in the past despite being somewhat small.....
but its TIME
to put a kickass show on the field!!!!

hey...the birthplace of college football needs to make a statement!

Wow. I grew up in drum corps, the Cavaliers. Who did you march with? Would love to see the Knights put on a show. After reading some of the comments on this thread, it would be great if people could see the difference with a top notch field presentation like you see with the best drum corps.

...this will give you an idea of what the band was like in the 80's. This show ... was done, I believe, at the Tropicana Music Bowl in Rutgers Stadium. The Tropicana Music Bowl was a national high school music competition: we hosted either the eastern or northeast regional. As the host, at the end of the competition, we did our show for the high school bands and their supporters.

I went to, or should say worked, that show, I'm feeling old.

I will freely admit that I get my info second and third hand, basically from these boards in the past.

But from what I have been told it runs much deeper than the band direction. The Rutgers music department discourages anyone in its program from playing in the band. The support of the band from the school and the athletic department(which I think is in charge of the band), inducing money, academic support, scheduling, etc. is not good at all. Once Tim leaves they should seriously burn every part of the program and start all over again.

When Stauffer came in as the new Dean for Mason Gross he was invited to a end of season banquet and given an opportunity to speak. He seemed enthusiastic basically said we (Music Department) have to work on better supporting the marching band. I don't know if anything has changed materially since. And lord knows changing faculty attitudes doesn't happen quickly even if a dean wants to move in that direction.
