The QB competition will be started on equal ground finally with a slight edge to experience going to Chris. If Chris wins the job this time, then there should be no ground swell of anti Chris talk. The fans should unite with him. I'm sure Coach Ash will use more than one QB anyway to prepare a quality backup unlike Elmer. I believe our QB play will surprise the fan base in a positive way with a more QB friendly offense and better coaching to help the players. This season is being sold short by many, and with all the changes on both sides of the ball and coaching staffs, it's not unreasonable to think that way. My gut, or is it Scarlet colored glasses tells me a 7-5 season awaits us.

Agreed, but I predict this thread will not end well, because some people think the QB should be model citizen and flawless in all aspects of life.

Seriously doubt the fanbase as a whole will ever get behind Laviano. Didn't happen with Teel, didn't happen with Nova. Every RU QB is 1 interception away from being burned at the stake. Add to that how many still have their pink panties in a bunch over his reaction to their own classless behavior and you have what amounts to close to a no-win situation.

How dare you--fans have every right to boo whatever they want!;)
Some folks take things so personally.

I still feel that Hayden has the highest ceiling.
Yeah, those contemporary homes in California have them, not like the capes and ranches on Long Island.

Timely post. Dunleavy has an article up assessing the QBs:
http://www.nj.com/rutgersfootball/i...our_quarterbacks_as_t.html#incart_river_index
A lot more in the article:

Laviano:
Completed 60.9 percent of his passes -- tops for a Rutgers quarterback since Mike Teel's final season in 2008 -- and led the Big Ten in completion percentage for most of the first half of last season because he is good on quick strikes like ones envisioned to slot receiver Janarion Grant.

Rettig:
Cannon arm allows him to fit passes in to tight windows if Rutgers receivers again struggle to gain separation on routes.

Unfortunately the media blackout at practices is going to make it harder for us to keep abreast of who is doing well and who is not. Ash and co will certainly pick the guy who gives them the best chance to win (i believe this will be a true competition) but they may even be forced to use some form of rotating system based on the type of defense they will be seeing each week. My gut tells me that there will not be a clear cut runaway winner in the competition as it hasn't happened before. (of course Allen is the one possible exception). Time will tell.

Although I agree with your premise 100 % ,as soon as you suggested a unified front of our fan base you were in need of a stick to get the crap off of your shoes.

Also, a unified fannbase would result in a very boring board.

I believe the opposite. I would expect QB play to be the most inefficient performing unit on the offense and quite possibly the team - regardless of who wins the job. Because of this I only expect 3-4 wins as a betting man. 5 wins would give me A LOT of confidence in Ash moving forward. Furthermore, I do not believe Laviano is the decider leader of the battle nor do I believe he is the best man for the job - I'm hoping who ever wins the job gives us the best chance to attack all areas of the field (width and depth).

It is very difficult to have true QB competition for 4 players in short time.

Could you see the top 2 whoever they are getting the vast majority of snaps by week 2? It does appear Ash will have to decide quickly which could hurt Allen. I don't know how much he's been throwing to the WR's but the unfamiliarity could put him in a tough spot.

Spot on. There are a lot of fans on this board and in our stadium that are clueless and classless (are the all Eagles fans? lol just kidding). However, when Ash brings us to the next level more fans who know the game will start coming our way. Giants fans are tough on their QB's too but they don't boo the guys who they want to lead us to W's while they are having a good game. In the words of Charlie Sheen in 8 Men Out "they might be stupid but they're not dumb."

For those who are hoping for 2 QB's to take snaps in games that count, remember Coach Ash came from Ohio State where they did it very often and won.

While I'm not in favor of booing college kids, let's be honest, both Teel and Nova were legitimately awful for extended periods of time. It's not like it was a single bad game that stopped people from getting on board.

New staff and offensive system hopefully gives them all a fresh start. Will support Ash's decision.

This season if a QB struggles(3picks) I believe staff will not hesitate to put in a backup to see what they can do to move offense. I'm not saying starter loses job after 1 bad outing.... I do believe this staff is open to change when it benefits team chance of winning. If backup comes in and controls offense and team does better, he will continue to get playing time.

We are not set in stone for the season after initial announced is made for starter. There's competition every day at every position.

Significant parts of our fan base were utterly convinced, based on what I'm not sure, that the last two coaches were incapable of having an open QB competition. But I don't think closing practices is going to have a real impact on the keyboard koaches ability to evaluate our QB talent.

I'm not sure what Ash has done to suggest that he can do otherwise for these folks, other than the same coach speak talking points the other two offered up.

Don't get me wrong I'm all in for Ash and this is not a concern for me as far a him being open minded. I am concerned one our our guys might not step up and seize the opportunity. I don't care who it is and I am glad I don't have to make the call.

It'll be interesting to see how Ash handles a QB who is struggling. Will he pull him or let him try to work through it? If Laviano starts the season and struggles in the first half against Washington, will Ash let him start the second half?

Yup, first series of 3rd, then maybe a switch. Remember, Elmer isn't running the program anymore, and term papers are due next week.

The only thing I need to know in the QB competition is this.

"After every game we'll sit down and evaluate every player: Quarterback especially," Ash said. "We'll go through a number of things to determine whether, one, he performed at a championship level and gave us a chance to win the game."

The QB's will be held accountable and it will be an ongoing competition. Not an appointment for the season.

Biggest thing for me is, it appears that the evaluation will be ongoing. The problem with last year to me, was that when the starter struggled, the back up was NEVER an option. Contrast that with the RB by committee, where the reps were divided even though one of our RBs might have found a rhythm.

I just want the players to have accountability, I don't feel the last coach saw that as a requirement. Not to revert to rants about last year, I am hopeful that the new coach will find ways to get the best out of his players; flexibility seems to be a start.

Biggest problem for me has been the keyboard coaches who see the offense having a hard time and immediately come to the conclusion that the QB is having a bad day or is struggling. No consideration is ever given to the amount of pressure on the QB or time he has to make decisions, or the openness of receivers. No idea if the possible replacements for this QB have shown no ability to do better in these types of situations in practice (which they have never seen) . But they know best... because they are the keyboard commandos !!!

Ohio State had better QBs than we do. And it could be argued that they won despite that approach, not because of it.

At least we will never have to hear the words " X is our starter because X gives us the best chance to be 1-0 this week."
