Transfer portal

Winning with hired guns has got to be such a weird feeling. A huge part of coaching is developing talent and building relationships with the athletes.
Bormet could only develop a case of hemorrhoids.

Goodale was one of the first coaches to frequently and effectively used the transfer portal. He has coached 10 different All Americans and 50% of them were transfers. Yara (Harvard), Bulsak (Clarion), Rivera (Northwestern), Suriano (Penn State), and DelVecchio (NC State).

Other well know transfers included Billy Ashnault (Lock Haven) Mario Mason (Minnesota), Alex Caruso (Lehigh), Daryl Cocozzo (Edinboro), Andrew Campolottano (Ohio State), Eleazar DeLuca (Northern Colorado), Christian Colucci (Lehigh) and Jordan Pagano (Penn State).

The transfer of Billy Ashnault likely had a major impact on Anthony'Ashnault's selecting Rutgers. Plus, some claim that the transfer of Suriano to Rutgers lead to the opening up of the transfer portal.

Let's be careful in criticizing transfers. They have been a big part of our program.

Totally agree.

Totally agree.
I think that the current hostility toward the portal is that transfers appear to be driven primarily by NIL rather than by getting a fresh start or having a better shot at wrestling in duals. I sure that there were “deals” that drove transfer prior to NIL but not the high dollar stuff we are seeing today.

I’m just very curious how Michigan finds it feasible to pay close to a million dollars per year to a handful of wrestlers. Wrestling is not a sport that generates a ton of revenue and Michigan wrestles in front of dozens of people each home dual.

Exactly. Outside of NIL, what's the drive to go there? Great school but they're wrestling in front of family members at most. For a school with as much wrestling history as Michigan does, you'd think they'd actually draw fans.

And yes, when your team is predominantly all upperclassmen portal adds, you're going to be looked at much differently than if you're adding 1-2 grad transfers and the rest of your team is all organically grown from HS level up.

I don't think anyone is criticizing transfers. It's the large sum of money that's driving the wrestlers to transfer. The NJ wrestlers in your post didn't receive money to transfer back. They chose to return to their home state for what ever reason. Big difference in the reason why wrestlers are transferring now from then.

It is to Cliff Keen. It helps to have the largest wrestling apparel supplier in your back yard.

NIL is legal and the law of the land. Can't blame a young man for seeking better opportunities. We continue to hear rumors that wrestlers are getting a bundle of money. We have yet see any proof of what kids are getting, the terms of the deals, and we know people exaggerate.

How do teams that have worse facilities, less money, less scholarships, limited fans, or lack the attraction of the Big Ten do better than us? Many of the teams that finished higher than us at the national championship fit this category. Just look at the list

Every team has obstacles. Some overcome them and some don't.

This poster is usually correct. It seems as if he gets info directly from the coach.

Maybe Cardenas (197), Fish (165), Askey (157), Crosby (285), or McGonagle (141). Crosby wouldn't be much of an upgrade. McGonagle only if not convinced about Oliveri. Fish would be upgrade at 167 if not costing much money. Askey helps if plan is to redshirt Harer. Cardenas would be major upgrade especially if Poz can go 184 and Soldano redshirts.

The second best option would be Yara changing his mind. Unless there is another guy yet to entered, not many other options.
If you are saying Crosby wouldn’t be much of an upgrade to Yara I would agree. But I think you are saying he wouldn’t be much of an upgrade to who we have on our roster behind Yara? I would totally disagree with that. Crosby is a top 16 guy and what we have after Yara doesn't have a chance to qualify for NCAA’s. With what is currently in the portal at 285 we should be ecstatic to get a guy like Crosby assuming we are losing Yara.

I heard Crosby doesn't want to come East.

Well that stinks, he is from Erie and goes to Bucknell-it's not like Rutgers is across the country for him!

We need some late entries to the Portal
So Lock Haven (or maybe Clarion) then, as Pitt has redshirt freshman Pitzer at HWT? He plans to return to Erie to be an elementary school teacher according to his LinkedIn.

Wonder how much longer in life Tallmadge is going to follow the Santaniellos

Joined their club during youth wrestling, then transferred from Brick Township to Memorial, then followed Vin to Navy, now following both to Pitt
Well I mean they are first cousins , if you had elite wrestlers family members the same age as you wouldn’t you want to team up with them? I personally think it’s pretty cool ,they should all start next season

I'm trying to be patience, but I really hope we're not going to just sit back and punt at 165 and Hwt.. I know Hwt. was a shocker, but 165 has been known since it seems forever.

I wonder if we see Erik Gibson leave PSU as well. He is a 165er and was highly recruited out of high school (committed to Cornell before flipping to PSU as well).

Looks like he grey-shirted and trained with the NLWC for a year before enrolling and redshirting at PSU last year. As per WrestleStat he only wrestled once (1-0) last year at the NCO for some reason, but wonder if he could be an option as well.

I think we’re trying but just coming up short on every name we pursue. No one wants to hear it but aside from Penn State pretty much everyone has one weight that is a total dud and even they had the 125 problem for a while

They might still have the 125 problem as the #1 seed at NCAAs didn't place.

Well to be fair, a true freshman, lost 3-2 to the champ and in ot to the 7th place finisher. Yes, bad finish by a 1 seed, but still a great year in a crazy 125lb weight class. And they have one of the top pound for pound recruits in the country coming in next year, Luke Lilledahl. I think they will be ok...lol

Agree and look at the 165lb portal guys...except for the top guys who signed right away, the rest are really not worth going after. We need "someone" to reach out to a 165lber and say "hey, we need you, how much would it take to get you into the portal and come to RU"....gotta play the game!
