Transfers??

That's a tough one. They have experience in the system, but The current QB...Rettig is good. I'm not counting Laviano as good.

On a related note...there will be some Rutgers transfers, but, I think it would be inappropriate to speculate on names. Maybe between semesters and before Spring practice.

Thankfully, Flood was too stupid to ever give Rettig or anyone else a chance. He might have saved his job.

Or he may have been exactly correct in playing Laviano. Flood was a bad coach, obviously, but the Rettig nonsense is just that. There is zero evidence to the contrary. The most a sane person could wish is that we would've gotten to see more of Rettig in the early season (against WSU), until they separated themselves in game situations for all to see. Anyone who claims Rettig is better is, quite simply, talking out their ass.

You know you're just encouraging the Fluddites, right?

No such thing. They are unicorns. Great mythical beasts who exist only in the minds of those who want to argue and complain.

I chalk it up to flood not knowing what the hell he is doing with QB's.

Sure. But who is better? Laviano or Rettig? Anyone who says Rettig is full of it, because their opinion is based on nothing at all. The coaches may have been right, or they may have been wrong, and thats really all there is.

And to be clear, I harp on the point only because of that disgrace of a booing session in the last game. That was a damn embarrassment. Kid deserves hell of a lot better than that after what he went through this year.

Retting has much more upside. Far bigger arm and produced when he went in to the point we should have seen more. Retting might be terrible. We know Laviano was.

Agree on the booing. That was amateur hour.

Hasn't this been discussed already?

you people are just absurd. the "nothing at all" was shown on the field. laviano was awful. rettig couldn't have been any worse. i'll take a strong-armed unknown QB over a noodle-armed losing QB, at least until he becomes known. too bad flood denied him the chance.

Why would he go after a transfer when he hasn't even evaluated his own players yet

Is there a reason to still talk about Flood in almost every thread?
Completely agree, but realize as in therapy, there is a lot of inner anger and frustration that many are releasing. Strange I know, especially since we are talking about a Football Coach, not the President of the U.S. But, to Alumnus and their relationship to the football program can very well be a direct correlation with every day life.
Wow, that was deep! Have a nice day.

True enough. But logically speaking, the only evidence Laviano is a better QB in live games is the previous coaches that were just fired for doing a bad job thought he was better.

Let's all let it go. New coaches, new program.

The kid that sat on the bench all year deserved better. I can't feel bad for Laviano when he got to play. Rettig deserved a series in a meaningful game.

Rettig should have played vs. Army. We still would have won as laviano had what 100 yards vs. Army?

I keep hoping this BS will stop once Ash takes over. I'm pretty confident it won't. There are people on this forum that are still upset that the coaching search missed them as a candidate - twice now - nothing will change.

I go to bed and in 3 replies you high jack the thread to talk about flood. Are we a big enough program to attract this level of QB?

Once again, it didn't have to be Laviano vs Rettig. I don't know why this is so difficult to comprehend. Many coaches - I'd even say most coaches - would replace the starter (even if only for a few series) if the guy struggled the way Laviano struggled.

When your starting QB does not throw any touchdown passes or isn't even leading the team into the end zone at all in repeated games, he is struggling. And obviously if the QB is struggling, the offense is struggling.

My point has always been that Flood should have seen what ANYBODY else could have done in the same situation. It wasn't just simply put Rettig in. I could care less who he tried, but the guy was dumb enough to not try anything different. And it rightfully cost him his job. Yes, he was extremely bad at handling QBs. Thankfully that era is over.

He did super well in a half against Norfolk State!! So much zip
and Laviano was 4 for 4 in the second half with 3 TD passes. His QBR was unreal.

Rettig looked like a dear in headlights anytime he had pressure and couln't get our of his own way.

Deserved it why? Because he transferred? Because he was a 4* recruit? If he deserved it then he should have earned the starting job

Because the QB competition was "too close to call" until just before the season started.

You supposedly had option 1a and 1b.
1a struggles.
You try 1b (even for part of a meaningful game).

It happens ALL THE TIME at other programs

The board meltdown will be epic this September when Ash picks Laviano as his starting QB.

And I think it is a real possibility if Laviano runs the spread to the satisfaction of coach, and shows the needed mobility for that offense....

Be prepared.....

Well, I am another person who states that Laviano was struggling in many games and Rettig deserved a meaningful snap. He also deserved a shot at throwing a deep pass to Leonte Carroo, but Flood was too stubborn to let this happen. I am now happy that he is no longer coaching at Rutgers and wish him the best in another job other than coaching for Rutgers or the Cowboys. ha!

Did the intelligentsia on the air at SiriusXM College Sports Nation or Ralph Friedgen or Josh McDaniel ever chime in on what they thought of how the QB situation was handled at Rutgers? Or is it just unprofessional to call out a head coach publicly for lame decisions?

Ole, all that many of us wanted was for Rettig to have some meaningful time on the field. At the very least, he would be better prepared if Laviano had a serious injury. Also, many QB take a series or 2 off to calm down, and maybe see tendencies on the field.

No the real meltdown will be when he goes 4 games without a touchdown, or
maybe when his no periphial vision will get him sacked or when he
throws off the wrong foot, or when he can't reach the guy that's 18 feet away.
or when he waves his hand at the fans, or when he goes out drinking with
a false ID the night before a game. Or puts us down on twitter, or when...........

I hate to say this, but once Ash hires an OC that runs the spread, Russo will decommit and Rettig will transfer to a state school in CA. If this happens, I will feel very bad for Rettig.

will ash go after an experienced QB? Trevor knight and Kyle Allen are both leaving Oklahoma and Texas A&M respectively.
Can Rutgers play the same card as Michigan did this past season when in-league transfer Jake Rudock of Iowa fell on the Wolverines' doorstep? Does Ohio State have a graduate transfer-eligible QB, like Cardale Jones, who would fit Coach Ash's offensive system? If the Big Ten OK'd a transfer to bolster Michigan's chances, there is no way they would block a transfer that would bolster Rutgers' fortunes. A competitive-against-the-big-boys Rutgers would do wonders for Big Ten network TV ratings (and future TV money).
