WRSU ran its 11th annual charity drive called “Showathon” that started at noon and ran 14 hours at the College Avenue Gym. The April 17, 1969 Targum reported WNEW-FM’s disc jockey Zacherley and several bands would complement the bidding for donated merchandise and auctions for the services of campus celebrities. In addition to others, the list included football coach John Bateman, basketball coach Bill Foster and a freshman basketball coach by the name of Jim Valvano. “According to WRSU litany, these slaves must give 24 hours of service to their buyers.” The December 5, 2015 Asbury Park Press reported Valvano’s teammates from the 1967 Final Four team in the National Invitational Tournament were honored at the Rutgers Athletic Center the night before. It was also announced the basketball court Valvano played on back on College Avenue would be named after Jim Valvano. The dedication took place on April 29, 2017.
