The is video on ESPN about UNC/ NCAA: & the article is frustrating.

Some talking head mentions that since the African Studies department offered these "courses" to everyone there was no special treatment of Athletes. He states about 35% of the students were athletes / 65% of the students were from the general population.

I was a Psych major / decent at Stat...but it's been a long time. How many were Football / Basketball players? How many students totally represented the population of Athletes from these two pools?

I'll bet there was a SIGNIFICANCE >.98 if 35% of students were Athletes...since the total students attending the school at Chapel Hill is >18,000.

The Normal Curve is Skewed / SCREWED.
Seriously, these rocket scientists / lawyers couldn't figure this out?

I'll say it again, since history DOES repeat itself" if we're gonna compete, we'll have to "cheat" at some level. And if we're gonna "cheat" why not learn from the best "UCLA, DUKE, KANSAS, KENTUCKY, UNC, NOTRE DAME, CUSE...etc.

MO
PS I don't want to cheat...and really don't condone it. But it seems to be the way of the world ...especially with the governing body being the NCAA: Nothing Classic About Academics.

Yes - the whole UNC thing is a hideous tangled & contrived mess. The "open to the general student body" part was a bit of twisted genius - it made it possible to squeeze through a sort of loophole. Undoubtedly the athletes who needed to gobble up a few of these GPA boosting classes, always got in to the necessary classes - while the 'general student body' probably had chances of getting into one of these easy classes that were like winning a million $ lottery - yes there are winners - but they are relatively very very few.

- North Carolina - made sure that just enough seats were available to members of the general student body - so it could be stated that various members of the student body were also enrolling in these "grade-gift" classes - and that would satisfy the concept that they were 'open to everyone'

But - I have a strong sense that it will be ill-advised to try to replicate this scam - The next institution that tries this will get a painful lesson - figure that the NCAA will bite down hard on the mimic - and - the accreditation bodies are also likely to be on high alert - they have already put UNC through a warning process.

Doubt that the exact same thing will happen again with one of the top schools - not because they will have repented / cleaned up - but simply because they will evolve and modify so as to not get caught for being foolish and repeating the trick that has now been exposed - they will find a new way to cheat - one that takes place in an area where the rules are fuzzy.

I'm really not advocating. More stating that some teams are either doing it (not uncovered yet) or might do it.

But look at the imbalance of Athletes taking the "class" vs general population. I'm guessing the ratio of athletes to general population is >20:1. So to have a 35% representation in the class when the population of football / basketball players is roughly 1/2 of 1% .... is mind boggling (unle$$ you're the NCAA).

NCAA= Bureaucratic Idiocy.

The problem with saying that we should cheat in order to win is this, IMO, the NCAA is not dumb, or weak, they are simply protecting their pocket book. The NCAA tourney is a money maker, the NC football championship and the new years bowls are huge money makers. Anything threatening sponsorship, perceived or real, has to be dealt with. PSU was sanctioned in a very high profile case so the sanctions were tough and very public.. One year later when there was no real news coverage they reduced the sanctions dramatically and let PSU off the hook. Now UNC could have been sanctioned for a lack of institutional control and academic fraud. Neither was part of the NOA, instead the allegation was academic advantage for athletes. This charge could be fought on the grounds the general population had access to the courses and therefore there was no unfair advantage for athletes so the case was dropped. They knew what they were doing from the start. This took so long because they had to work out a way to not kill an elite program. If it had been a g5 school or a lower tier p5 like us, or Illini, or BC, or Iowa State etc, the teams that no one would miss if they were not in a money making TV post season game or tourney they would throw the book at us. Maybe I am a skeptic or a conspiracy theorist but I believe this was a very calculated decision designed to let them off the hook. Not because they are weak or afraid but because they are hypocrites putting money ahead of ethics.

Once I saw the stat on more regular students having taken the courses than athletes I knew exactly which way this was going .

Don't agree with it at all but legally you could see the UNC strategy coming from a mile away.

Did you run the #'s (35% Athlete's / 65% general student)?
Athlete's are SIGNIFICANTLY over represented in this population.

UNC deserves losing several years of "W's".... and vacating one or several NC's.

DISGUSTING verdict.
No excuse to condone their behavior (either UNC or NCAA).

The NCAA is not going to come down on its signature programs. Some years ago, when Tark and UNLV were enduring heavy sanctions, the joke going around was that the NCAA was so angry at Kentucky that they penalized UNLV an extra year. Sham courses keep players eligible at many schools. At Duke, most of the team used to (and maybe still do) be sociology majors, and would have virtual players-only crib courses to stay eligible. Some players, of course, were part of the general student population, taking real classes towards a real major.
