looking for a fund that's heavy in equities and I'm okay with high risk as I'm 24 and investing long-term.

Any recommendations?

Vanguard healthcare is an excellent fund to start with. the population is aging and everybody needs healthcare and with obamacare and with premiums going up, vanguards mutual fund is a great play on the sector.

Nah. Couldn't recommend a single sector focus, even to a 24-year old.

I've been happily investing with Vanguard for longer than a lot of you have been alive. Made (and continue to make) lots of $$ on Health Care and the Primecap-managed funds, but when you're starting out stick with a broad-based fund like Index 500 or Total Stock Market.

May want to consider diversifying with exposure to large caps, small caps and international. Vanguard has funds that diversify based on your retirement target date. They are also low cost.

I will second the Vanguard Health Care Sector Fund and the S&P 500 fund. They are truly low cost funds, but their customer service and website information is second to none. Not sure how much you are starting out with, but most of their funds have a minimum investment of $3K. If anyone wants to start a fund for a child or student, etc. Vanguard has the Star fund which has a minimum investment of $1K. It invests in other funds of Vanguard. A great way to start someone off on an investment program

starting out - go with the S&P 500 - if possible go with the Admiral class VFIAX

If comfortable good actively managed fund is Windsor II VWNFX

Although a more conservative fund, I love vanguard wellington. I have been in the fund for over 10 yrs, very solid returns.

Here's a non-Vanguard, currently not open to new investors, I suggest keeping track of. I've been an investor in T Rowe Price's New Horizons Fund for over 20 years. It's concentration is in small cap, primarily domestic equities. It's a segment of the market that's particularly difficult for individual investors to do their own research. I've held it through raging bull markets and the Tech Bubble and Great Recession. and it's gone up and down during those years. HOWEVER, over that 20+ year history my return has averaged slightly over 12% per year before taxes.

You're young enough to ride out some bear markets for a good long term return. You're also a prime candidate for dollar cost averaging. If this fund ever reopens to new investors I suggest you take a look.

Any recommendations for John Hancock? I've finding that alot of people like the Vanguard program and bashing John Hancock.

the beauty of Vanguard is the passive investment element - index fund investing. As such the expense ratios are astronomically small 5 basis points. Should be a part of any investment portfolio.

The vanguard Total Stock Market Index is the only stock fund you need in your portfolio.

Warren Buffet himself recommends the Vanguard S & P 500 index fund. Good enough for me.
