Waning interest in the NFL

You see racism when I talk about the face of a league that is 80% black? You're really reaching.

I totally agree Rape-lisberger is a horrible thug and a rapist. Manziel is a loser so far. I forget Romanowski's crime - steroids? Leaf is just a loser.

Where does the NFL and its TV coverage force those four white examples of yours down our throat? You're trying so hard for a racial gotcha you missed the point there, Al Sharpton junior.

Closeminded, Racist and Reaching. Can't even give you a "nice try" there.
Romanowski was one of the dirtiest players ever. Broke Dave Meggett's finger on purpose in a pile up one time, punched another player in training camp and broke his jaw, his book is full of stories about his dirty play. He retired when they announced they were going to start testing for HGH.

The opinions of this board do not reflect society as a whole.

Feel free to apply this to any threads here.

Interesting how Deion sanders and Keshawn are thugs with no criminal history but Rutgers is okay with all of the robberies / beatings the players were apart of this year.

Racists in America have learned that certain words just won't be tolerated by society, and you will be criticized and denigrated if you use them. "Thug" has become the replacement word that many racists have adopted instead.

I could have written OP myself verbatim. Former STL Rams season ticket holder. This year SB50 will be first game I watch from start to finish. Likely stared by moving from STL 9 years ago to Omaha where Nebraska is the pro team. Just love CFB and still RU season ticket holder even though I only get back for 2 or 3 games. Just have lost interest totally in NFL.

I find the commercialization too much to take nowadays. I mentioned a while back in another thread that I was at the gym warming down after a workout while watching Monday Night Football. In a 7 minute period, they kicked an extra point after a score, had around 3 minutes of commercials, came back as the ball was being kicked off and ended up out of the endzone, then another 2-3 minutes of commercials. Just absolutely killed any interest in watching the game.

Well, he's taking a vacation now. Unacceptable for their first post on our board.

I see you are still the worst moderator in the history of Rivals board moderation. No surprised to come here and see you sticking up for your buddy and defending his honor.....lol

The guy who used that word is a standup guy.... not a racists bone in his body. Whenever screw makes a comment it absolutely has nothing to do with race. That was not about race.....not from screw.

You guys complaining about commercials do realize that college games are longer than pro games, right?

Simply - Roman Bread & Circuses:

"A phrase used by a Roman writer to deplore the declining heroism of Romans after the Roman Republic ceased to exist and the Roman Empire began: “Two things only the people anxiously desire — bread and circuses.” The government kept the Roman populace happy by distributing free food and staging huge spectacles."

Yeah, my interest in the NFL has had an inverse relationship with my rising interest in CFB. Used to watch all NFL and little to no CFB, but when RU started giving me a reason to follow CFB, got way more into that.

Cfb has so many more games and really good match-ups every week, so those three often-crappy NFL games on Sunday are a big letdown. Saturday is where it's at.
The NFL has become too predictable. The play calling overall just doesn't do it for me. College football anything goes at any time. Love it and the match ups between schools of different states.

I don't think the NFL is losing popularity but I think it's time for them to open Subday Ticket to more than just DirectTV. I think they're locked in for years, but opening that up to the web and cable would increase viewership insanely IMO.

without tying racism into this, and I know it wasn't screws point...the league has millions of people admiring Ray Lewis like he is the most stand up guy ever- hell, look at our own board here when his son was mentioned. Then you have G. Hardy and I bet if A Hernandez got off on a technicality, someone would have signed him too.

On the other hand, at least 60-70% of the NFL are not spoiled millionaires. Yes, they make more than most but they also never know if they are getting their next paycheck.

As for the brilliant "Nicky" comments- just as stupid as it gets and worse than racist. Because Nicky wants his football violent he doesn't look at players as human. Hey dumbass- these guys have family, feel pain, have emotion and have 50-60 years to try to enjoy after they are done with the game we all enjoy so much.

One of the best YouTube video clips of all time is Deion, as a frosh at FSU, coming across the field at full speed to tackle Bo Jackson. Bo stiff arms him to the ground like a 6 week old puppy.

Deion often says that that single play is the reason he never supported the run again...

Here's how and why I watch NFL FB.: A) I like to watch teams that have Ru guys playing.B) I don't really care if ANY of these teams wins or loses .C) I watch because it is FB played on the highest level by the best players.D) I will watch tonight's game and enjoy Cam and his team and not care if he wins or not.I will watch Peyton play, perhaps his last game, and wish him well because my adult Daughter is a Fan of his. If /when he loses, I really wont care. I LOVE RUTGERS FB and have CARED about it seemingly FOREVER.RU:football:ROCKS!!

Beaced- I can respect every word you just wrote

I'll be turning on my TV exactly at 6:30pm to watch starting with the kickoff. I don't watch any NFL games that don't
include the Jets or Giants and even then I'm only slightly interested in them. Many times I don't even watch them at all.
I've completely stopped watching NBA and MLB. I've not watched 1 inning of MLB or 1 quarter of NBA this century.

I love college football. For a very long time, I loved NFL football equally well, but that is beginning to change. Perhaps it is the bombardment of game-interrupting commercials. Maybe it is the increased awareness of the terrible brain trauma suffered by career players. It could be the disgust of watching the absurd prices, salaries and profits continue to climb beyond all reason. Perhaps it is failure of the NFL to contribute anything to the college teams that prepare players for the NFL.

For me, what has replaced interest in the NFL is a growing interest in Premier League and Champions League soccer. The games are never stopped for commercials. If the run of play is interrupted by injury, that time is actually added back on to the clock. The commentators usually stick to calling the on field play-by-play instead of meandering smalltalk. The motion is constant, the players fit enough to run almost continuously, often sprinting at top speed for two 45 minute periods split by a 15 minute halftime.

Many guys I've talked with are beginning to feel the same way about the NFL.
Only read the opening post in this thread but Jeez... Its like you was in my mind when I think about how the NFL is these days, lol. And yes I've taken to the Premier League and wondered how the NFL would do if they have NO COMMERCIALS, NO INTERRUPTIONS, NO IDIOTS IN THE BROADCAST BOOTH MAKING IT ABOUT THEMSELVES SIMPLY DOING PLAY BY PLAY, ETC ETC ETC.

The other guy who quoted your post was the one who mentioned the white guys not me but there's plenty of kids in college who are above their teams too just doesn't seem like a valid argument why the nfl is better than college. Look at Matthieu from lsu a few years ago or the d end on Baylor or Blount when he was at Oregon or the byu Memphis brawl in the bowl game last year, plenty of that stuff goes on in college, not to mention that a lot of schools pay players and you have players like JG for example who allegedly aren't even high school teamates. To think the college game is so selfless and pure is asinine in this day in age.

I don't watch every game and am basing my college evaluation mostly on how RU players act. And they act like teammates - not like Deion.

Racists in America have learned that certain words just won't be tolerated by society, and you will be criticized and denigrated if you use them. "Thug" has become the replacement word that many racists have adopted instead.

They can 'adopt' all the words they want, I don't give a shit. I calls em like I sees em. I noticed Racists in America are real quick to throw that accusation around too. That word means nothing now. It's just a verbal attempt to disarm and shut up a person in an argument. Like calling someone a Nazi.

And I don't care how he played and I'll admit he was electric on the field but don't hold out that me first no run supporting defensive player as an example of the best of the league's players.

I almost liked CFB more like 8-9 years ago and then I started to pay attention to what was actually going on. CFB is the biggest money grab in sports. I'm not talking about the coaches -- that's obvious. I'm referring to the booster culture. The ridiculous notion that we make donations and pay seat premiums because it's our responsibility to support and build our school. The schools don't care if you went there; they just a want a check. I'm so tired of writing checks every year to RU. And, yes, I know can give up good my seats and park farther away. And, no, I'm not saying that I should get any of that stuff for free. I am simply pointing out that the whole alma mater thing is nothing more than a sales pitch. At least in the pros they are up front and honest about it. CFB still sells a myth.

I concur with the OP. While it's true only a handful of college football teams have a legitimate chance to win the national title each season, the NFL is very similar in that you have to have a franchise QB to even have a prayer (with the occasional exception like Seattle '13, Tampa '02, Baltimore '00 when defenses were overpowering). I see the NFL becoming a lot like CFB in terms of personnel turnover except for the QB position...at least in CFB EVERY players moves on after 4-5 years. But if you have that franchise QB in the NFL you are almost guaranteed to be good the duration of their career.

I don't like the commercialization of the NFL (fantasy football especially), the fact that it's WAAAAAAY over covered by the media and most importantly, I don't feel a connection to my pro team the way I do RU even though my family has had NY Giants season tickets since I was a little kid. When the Giants win the Super Bowl, it's great and all...and I"m lucky to have witnessed it 4 times in my lifetime...but I have no affiliation with the organization. Yet, the bachelor's degree that hangs in my office says "Rutgers University" and if we ever dare I dream win the Big Ten, I couldn't imagine the sense of pride we'd all feel in the accomplishment, especially those of us who have been there going back to the really dark ages which make this past year look like a vacation.

CFB is much more like a caste system and it's hard to permanently elevate your status...that's the fun part of it for me personally, especially for a school like us who's not a blue blood (despite having a rich football heritage in our own unique way) but trying to climb the ranks. And while it's hard to do, it's not impossible (Miami, Virginia Tech, Oregon, Wisconsin, Baylor, etc. were all at one time nobodies in the world of CFB). The NFL is rigged so that suck ass franchises have every opportunity to improve themselves...there's a salary cap, higher draft picks for lousy records, etc. I liked the NFL much better before parity was introduced. To me, I love the degree of difficulty of what we are facing at RU. IMO that's what made the ride in 2006 all the much sweeter...what we had to endure from 2001-2005 to get to that point. I suspect WHEN we become legitimately competitive in the Big Ten it's going to feel much the same way, probably better as we will be doing it on the biggest stage in the country.

You forgot about him once spitting in the face of an opposing player.

And college games on TV are different how exactly?

Agree with the OP and will add that fantasy leagues being part of the downfall. Rule changes have catered to the offense for more scoring but as we saw Sunday defense wins championships. So many only care about individual stats and the great teams are ignored.

Last offseason really had me lose it with all non-stop delfategate talk. No matter what it is, the NFL loves itself being talked about. There really is such a thing as too much of a good thing.

When the Super Bowl ended in previous years, I was always left wanting more. Now the NFL is a never-ending season. Even the offseason is covered on ESPN just as much as, say, the NHL season.

But wait.........we need to start discussing the draft!

There's definitely a saturation point, and that's why the NFL is trying to expand to different audiences.

I also think part of the problem is the inane 24 hour sports channel that puts these guys on pedestals, and really has gotten away from real journalism. ESPN is garbage and if I ever have to listen to Chris Berman makes one of silly remarks again I'll probably jump out the window.

We are all getting older every day. Our tastes and tolerances change. $$$$

Congratulations. You purport to be a defender of the University's academic mission, yet you use a comment that is completely intellectually dishonest to steer conversation to fit your agenda of attacking your own school. Like most of your ilk, if the cause is perceived as righteous, there is no need for logic or integrity. Any comment, no matter how false or misleading, is justified. Moreover, there is no need for any sense of decorum...any opportunity to attack Rutgers is a good one.

You are a loser and a hypocrite. Go attack our University somewhere else. Or better yet, start your own thread about whatever point you were trying to make with the incoherent nonsense you posted above, so the rest of us can light you the F up. Because the people who post here, as a whole, have more pride and do more for our school than people like you ever will.

Wtf are u saying, I said he was okay with still rooting for Rutgers despite thugs that were on the team. U think college players are so much better behaved than NFL players ? All those nfl players were in college first

No one was insulting Rutgers but to deny that that team had thugs on it is crazy, his argument was the nfl sucks cus of thugs so does Rutgers suck cus of thugs that were on the team, should no one have watched them ? You are a hypocrite and a loser because you have no sense of logic, you are just an old cabbage head

WTF was denying the team had issues, and more importantly, who was "okay with it," as you originally suggested? The team had problem players and promptly removed them. Why are you bringing that up as if it's analogous to allowing criminals to play entire careers in your league the way the NFL does? It's not even worth comparing, so Cabbage Head is right: you're just bringing it up to piss on Rutgers for no reason at all.

I must admit... this post is throwing me off. I had you pegged as a Dowling-ite/self proclaimed Rutgers intelligentsia. Now I don't know what you stand for. Either way, its all a logical inconsistency. The fact is that there was 1 beating and 1 robbery. All of the actors were kicked off the team, and thrown out of school so Rutgers clearly not okay with it. So it has zero relevance to this discussion. Perhaps the fans wish the NFL would deal with problem the same way Rutgers does, by kicking the criminals out.

College football does not kick all criminals out... Neither does basketball these kids get plenty of chances, even more drug chances than most nfl players, the fact that u think nfl players are worse behaved than college players when everyone who played in the nfl played in college is laughable

Well since Keshawn and Deion were in the NFL no one should watch so since dre Boggs and peele were at Rutgers no one should watch that either according to the op's logic I'm not pissing on Rutgers at all, it's just a stupid point that the college game is so pure while nfl has so many thugs, people don't just become thugs if they are in the NFL they played college and they were a thug then too. Look at the tcu qb or UNC as a whole
