First time there. It was an exciting atmosphere with a great band and 80,000 plus. But I must say I was surprised at the crowd. We were there all day and there were tons of drunk students with some crude chants and taunting the Texas people. In the stadium there were lots and lots of drunk students. Several in front of us were having difficulty staying upright, and one threw up on himself. Ushers came to throw them out and scuffles ensued. Rude chants like "Texas Sucks!" and "@#@$ Texas arose during the game.

We left in the third quarter. Outside the stadium was a mess, people passed out or stumbling around, obnoxious students all over.

I guess it happens at a lot of college football venues, but I didn't expect it at ND. It has that "holier than thou" reputation, that stuff like that doesn't happen there. It was worse than anything I've seen at any RU game.

Of course, unlike the NJ press and Rutgers, there probably wasn't an article or news report in the Indiana media saying how bad the crowd was.

the fighting irish in scuffles?

I'm an ND alum and fan, and I'm surprised to read this. There can always be an isolated incident or two, but generally, ND students and fans are very respectful. With the exception of USC and Michigan, most ND fans are very hospitable to an opposing team's fan base. I think there was some frustration with this game because UT fans bought a lot of tickets from ND fans. Still, the type of behavior described by the OP is unusual.

You missed the irony/sarcasm. What would you expect from fans of a team named the fighting Irish? I know nothing about ND's fan base, and I don't really care about ND. They are irrelevant to me unless they are playing Rutgers.

Sorry, thought I hit Reply to your post, I was really responding to the OP.

.

Newsflash: College kids get drunk during all day tailgates before night games.

Last year two good friends of mine (husband & wife) from Louisville attended the game vs. ND at ND. One man behind them was screaming all game for ND and was quite drunk. My friends asked him to please be somewhat calm. He got mad and took a leak on their seats and on them. The police were called over and the man was evicted from the stadium and was charged with indecent exposure. My friends had to go to court to testify against him. So much for Notre Dame fans. This guy was an adult too.

OP, quit making up stuff. This unruly behavior occurs no where else in the world except for Rutgers. Sources at the Newark Rag say that even European futbol fans find the behavior of Rutgers fans shocking and uncivilized. I say impossible that there are drunk and unruly fans at any other place in the world.

Yikes!

lies, lies, all lies.... this only happens at Rutgers - just ask the two hacks at nj.crap.

I initially wasn't going to post this because I found it has a somewhat "dog bites man" quality to it. I've been to games at Columbus, Pitt, UConn, Maryland, PSU, WVU, FSU, BC and a host of other places. The behavior is found everywhere (WVU and PSU being tied for the worst I've seen) at big time college games where 18-22 year old college kids (and drunk adults) congregate. Maybe I bought into some of the ND myth that it doesn't happen there and it's more "civilized." That's why I think it's ridiculous that RU occasionally gets the negative article in the SL and NJ.com complaining about fan behavior. The South Bend/Indianapolis papers (or whatever is ND's primary media outlet) would never think of writing an article about it, because it's kind of like saying the sun rose in the east today. Although I do remember ND getting some negative press when the fans were throwing snowballs at the team a few years back. If that happened at RU, they'd be clamoring to shut down the program or move to the FCS and return to playing Lehigh and Colgate.

I was at the game saturday night and actually didnt witness anything but enthusiastic fan participation by both sides. Yes students ( and some alumni ) drink to much for night games but I think the almost 10,000 texas fans enjoyed themselves before kick off. I find it to be a very hospitable crowd but again I spent most of the day on campus and not in the parking lots. Students all stand in the student section, all 8,000 attend

We were in the student section. My nephew just started there and he got us tickets.

My brother-in-law and I were there for a game a few years ago. We sat right next to the student section and there were no problems. We saw nothing but the best of hospitality before, during, and after the game.

I take it because it was the first game of the year and it was a opening night game. Notre Dame hasn't played a night game to open their season in a very long time. It happens everywhere but typically ND stadium is not a rowdy crowd. Wait until fans go to PSU

The worst fan behavior I have ever seen is ND fans at a USC game. Crude, rude, obnoxious. Then they lost and they got even worse.

I would have cut it off at the base and attached it to my tomahawk like a scalp...

Good post by OP. And it's not just the media...our own fans think that certain things ONLY happen at RU. Mike Teel got some bad treatment On the Banks at times, but people ignore the fact that at the same time Pitt had to move the parents of their starting QB to a separate section so they could avoid all the abuse from the fans.

Was at the game as well and had the same experience described here.

I was at the Northwestern-Notre Dame game last year and was actually surprised how quiet the crowd was. By then the Irish had lost a few and the bloom was off the rose, I suppose. It didn't help their mood when NU beat them. I was mildly hacked off when I noticed that they'd done a good job of cleaning the snow from an earlier storm away from the home section, but didn't seem to have bothered to get around to the visitors' section. Had to buy an ND seat cushion to avoid a wet butt in 28-degree weather, so maybe it was just a ploy to sell more merchandise. :-)

I always thought the ND crowd was an old-money crowd, as many of the people there have been season ticket holders for decades.

A caller to an XM Radio college sports show today commented that "Texas showed up with 10000 fans and a place kicker, that's it".
Watching that game I was thinking more like 40,000+ Texas fans. When they showed shots from the blimp, aside from the corner of students, that crowd was majority "burnt orange."

I remember when Texas came to Piscataway. They took over one of the upper decks and rang cowbells for every offensive play we had.

Not a chance. Had family there and at most was 15k
