RAPID REACTION - Notre Dame

It's funny all the talk about switching.

In the 1st half there was a play where ND specifically and patiently got Ogbole (I believe?) in a switch on Shrewsbury. He promptly shot over him and made a 3.

Elite teams (which might not be a problem in CBB or the Big Ten) should be doing that constantly.

For example, we need to attack switching defenses to get Ace in a mismatch and let him go to town.

Switching works best when you have more positionless players... Ogbole isn't that.

Another thing, too, going without Somerville or Ogbole was that we could switch 1-5. In the second half, we basically gave up fighting through screens and just switched, which worked out much better for us.
EitherSomerville is trying to prove he is the best Freshman, or he cannot improvise and pass after he makes a move to the basket.
He needs to pass out the 5 as much as he attempts the shot, for Rutgers to be the team it can be, especially with guys like Hayes on the floor.
Cannot play black hole.
His best play this season was his over the head pass in the post!
We need more of that.

I like what Somerville is giving us.
He’s got a really solid post game and holds his own for a 1 month in frosh

1. Dylan Harper is an absolute stud. Unguardable. Epic performance on a big stage with 36 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. Wow.

2. Matt Allocco - damn I wish we got him in the portal. That kid is a gamer. Played all 45 minutes and is draining contested threes in OT to nearly will ND to victory. 24 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 gigantic stones.

3. The other player of the game for Rutgers was Jeremiah Williams. He played incredible defense, completely erasing Braden Shrewsbury in the second half, skyed for rebounds, and hit several clutch baskets, including 2 very surprising threes. 10 points and 6 big rebounds.

4. Shout out to Derkack too, who also played another good all around game, hit 2 big threes in the first half, but then used that success to get into the paint. 16 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 assist.

5. PJ Hayes was planted on the bench the entire second half. Not sure why, but I’m guessing Pike didn’t like what he saw from PJ on defense in the first half.

6. Tyson Acuff got his first extended run as a Scarlet Knight and contributes 7 points, 7 rebounds, and 1 assist on a fast break in OT.

7. Ace had a poor game overall, but that pull up jumper he hit late was big.

8. The rebounding margin was in favor of ND 42-36, but it was much better in the second half. ND takes a lot of threes, and plays a lot of “five out,” and that creates rebounding difficulties for the defense.

9. Rutgers got back to playing some good tough defense from mid first half through the end of the game. Yes, ND scored points, but a lot of that was Allocco just being unconscious.

10. Interesting lineups in the second half. No Ogbole or Hayes at all, barely any Sommerville either. We played small ball with Ace as the tallest guy on the court, subbed out for Martini. This smaller lineup was more effective at chasing around NDs’ players (they ran a lot of high screen action), and also opened up the lane for Dylan to cook on offfense.

11. On to Alabama. Think we will get crushed dealing with their athleticism. So this win was huge.
Hayes missed some wide open 3's in the 1st half and was awful on defense. If a kid is supposed to be a lights out shooter and can't hit his shot and is bad defensively, he should be on the bench. Summerville is bad defensively and doesn't box out, he needs work and Egbole is a black hole offensively.

Oh, one more thing. The refs were awful. They missed several travels by ND, and they missed an obvious charge by Davis in OT when he lowered his shoulder on a drive and destroyed Derkack.
Degas your being kind ion them missing several travels
Some were so blatant I just don’t get how 3 refs can miss them!!!
They definitely had an effect on the outcome

I want Hayes to start but he needs to hit his shots.
If he's not then he'll end up on the bench.
Especially if Acuff, Derkack and Williams do hit them.

I think we are going to see a lot of Ace at the "5". I said this from Day 1.

We are going to get hammered on the boards, but we have to make it up by forcing the opponent to take their "5" off the board. If that shot blocking 5 is in the game we need to get him out of the paint and make him guard someone he probably shouldn't be able to guard.

ND thoroughly abused Hayes....they found who hayes was guarding and took him off the dribble.

Hayes is almost unplayable right now with a base defense of man to man. He is that bad.

You are having a rough day from a spelling standpoint.

1. Eerily similar to the ND double overtime NCAA game in the back and forthness. Two great games in a row.

2. For all you RU fans who want a sold out game at the Garden, seems to me a ND matchup/series would work out quite well.
Not giving away a conference game.

3. Dylan is just special. Best player since Sellers. Bailey, Hinson, Battle, Douby, all improved year to year. None were this good as a freshman.

4. Williams again in the 2nd half was a force. Would like some of that intensity in the first half. Did look like best conditioned player on the floor. By far Best defensive player on the court. Hit enough shots to keep ND honest. Hopefully the same Williams player from the first few games last year.

5. Can see Williams and Acuff getting healthier and bodes well for RU.

6. Ace had a “freshmen” rough shooting game but still picked up key basket and key rebound at the end. Would like to see his shots just a little closer so chance for rebounds and dunks but can still see that he will only get better.

7. Derkack had a quiet solid all around game.

8. Pike has to be pulling his hair out. He inserts PJ in the game as a starter. Gets a wide open three to start the game. Could open up the court for Dylan and Ace. PJ misses. A nice coaching move for naught. PJ did nothing rest of game. Think sucked wind out of him. Pulling hair out part II, Pike inserts Davis in twice for defense. Matador defense ND blows by him in first half, second killer three by ND near end of game. You had one job. Gives Allocco and ND confidence. Pike made right move. Players didn’t execute. BTW, third 0-for game in a row for Davis. If this were Simpson many of you would absolutely be killing him.

9. A tale of two games. Free throw shooting was supposed to be a strength. We were awful in the 1st half. Going to cost us games if we don’t improve. Paradoxically free throw shooting saved us 2nd half and especially OT. 9-12? Good teams win games fouls shooting so that was encouraging and when pressure was on.

10. Pike has an eye for talent. Allocco would have been a nice fit. Cam Spenser like. Guess Midwestern kid wants to go to ND but could have been part of something special here with Martini. Oh well. Still think have to get Martini some looks somehow. If he comes in the game with Somerville sadly he won’t see the ball.

11. Both Bama and RU likely exhausted. Game can only prepare Ru for rigors of B1G and hopefully the Big Dance. So I think this game is really no lose. Just don’t want a confidence sucking blowout.

12. Latest RU game ever? Remember RU losing at Utah State in the Wenzel years that was pretty late at night.

13. Refs were horrendous. Never to our benefit. Integral part of game. Can’t ignore. Two fouls on Dylan early? Come on. Do better.

14. Go RU!

#8 didn't disappoint us!

Alloco played the game of his life. Let's see how he does over a full season in the ACC

I have a solution and it involves both of these players getting well acquainted with the bench.

Think you guys are too hard on Lathan, we have a center who can play like a guard. He will learn to play defense and eventually learn to pass the ball out. He wants to score because he can. Its not your typical big with no post moves who needs a wide open dunk or a lob to score.

PJ missed 2 shots - it happens. On D he got overpowered for buckets twice. Didn’t play after the first 10 minutes so of course he “did nothing the rest of the game”. We’re going to need him, or someone, to shoot a high % on 3’s so we can’t glue him to the bench yet.

Do they still call traveling in college basketball ? It sure looks like they don't call it on Notre Dame. Their guys were tap dancing a lot last night.
