Wash. St. view of our game from their site (link)

They will come out passing lights out, just like last year, and our DBs better be ready. RU can probably handle any running attack they come up with.

RU has some work to do with a virtually untried QB and a couple new guys on the OL. I'm pretty confident that the OL will jell at some point, but the question is 'how soon?'. RU has a very good stable of WRs and RBs to compliment the O, but again, it depends upon the development of the OL.

Here's hoping our DLs will keep their QBs running for their collective lives.

This is our most important OOC game. Win this and we likely go 4-0 in OOC games and only need 2 B1G wins to go minor bowling and 3 or 4 to match last season. Lose and we have little chance of matching last year's success.

Its a big game for both teams. The starting QB will only have one start under their belt for this game. I believe we will win but it won't be easy. WS will have to travel across, play in NJ September heat, and deal with the stadium notice.

I hate to put too much emphasis on a single game, but this game is HUGE in terms of perception. We beat WSU comfortably and everybody will be giddy with joy, looking forward to the following week's game at Penn State. Lose and a lot of air will be sucked out of the 2015 season.

Agree with everyone that said this is a huge game for us. 4- 0 OOC and 2-4 wins in conference and the perception is still on an upswing.

Should have made it a 12 noon start payback for that 10 pm start out west. I know TV dictates the start but we should have demanded it. Our guys were playing football til 2 am going by body clock.

I think our running backs will be the key to this game. If our OL can control the line of scrimmage and open some holes, we can use up a lot of clock on each possession and rack up several scores. Hopefully, whoever their new QB is will not be as good as the guy they had last year, at least for the first part of the season. He had some lights out games before going down with the injury.

HUGE game for RU and the tone of the season. We need to win this one. It won't be easy and our D will be tested big time. But if this season is a positive outcome, this game is important as any!

Well, this year we'll teach them to more than respect us.... this year they will begin to fear us, and never sign a home and home again.

A heavy dose of James/Hicks and Martin with short, safe passes , occasional bomb, to get the new QB his feet wet without a lot of risk. Of course if RU is behind by late 3rd Qtr, the QB will be asked to do a lot more.

Perfect 2nd game after Norfolk St.

they won't be able to handle the heat and humidity in september

The summer weather in Pullman (which is located in Eastern Washington close to the Idaho border) isn't quite as hot and humid as New Jersey. But, it's pretty close and nothing like the temperate and often rainy weather of Seattle where we played them off campus last year. Weather maybe a factor. But, it will be negligible next to the travel, itself.

Well said.

Better than last year when they gave us just about zero respect (which was ridiculous)
----------

I lurked on their board preseason last year and could confirm this....most discussion was about opponents further into the season...

The fact that they were about a 10 pt favorite has a tendency for fans, not necessarily the team, to overlook a foe

This years game could easily be a nail biter and no one should look past them......they figure to put up big passing yardage..

....my main hope is that our starting QB is game ready, but more importantly, that we can run at will, where they cannot

Rutgers' running game and time of possession will be the key to victory. Hostly, Wazzoo was loaded with seniors last year and their defense was putrid. Don't expect much improvement from that group for this season.

100% right but we will get a great deal of wind back in our sails and respect when we come back and beat state penn at their house

On offense WSU should be fine. Leach can get anyone to be solid in his offense. It's their defense that is much worse than the one Rutgers faced last year.

Sadly, the one time that I would rather a 12:00 start and we get a 3:30 game. We had to play them at what, 12:30 a.m. east coast time? Turn about is fair play. They should have had to play us at 9:00 a.m. west coast time.

"September heat" ???

In a discussion last year it seemed that posters here who have experience with this sort of thing said it's tougher to play at your best after traveling west to east than east to west. If they leave the West Coast at 9 AM Friday, they here at what? 5PM? By the time they have their walkthrough and eat it's 8 o 9 PM. A 12PM start would be optimum but 3:30 still throws them off their routine.

The WSU game is very key game, just as it was last year regarding bowl eligibility. It's a game RU needs to win at home and if they don't it may be very difficult to get to 6 wins. The road game at Indiana is also very important.

Also, our d line should make it a long night for them.
Unfortunately, our D line won't be a huge factor as many of leaches routes are quick reads and don't need time to develop.

Am I wrong for thinking this game is only a slight step above the Kansas one? I don't really see this as a "gain respect" type game. They lost their QB who threw for about 600 yards per game, their top receiver, and have to travel across the country. Add all that to the fact that they weren't exactly a good team last year and I expect an easy victory.

Hamilton to disrupt their 3 step drops. To Ray to live in their backfield otherwise.

RU had 3-4 sacks last year and held WSU to 1 YPC but yes, they will have to depend on the LB's and DB's to play a good game.

Rutgers had 3 sacks. Halliday had a quick release. HC Mike Leach is working on improving Luke Falk release time. Falk is known for holding the ball longer than Halliday and has resulted in a higher average sack/knockdown/hurries per game compared to Halliday. Halliday was 4th overall in being sacked/knockdown/hurried among QB on the FBS level. There is a reason why Leach has statement time and time again of trying to run the ball more this year.

I admired Haliday the way he stood in there and took a beating week after week. As we know it eventually just got to be too much and ended his chances of an NFL career.

Doug, as a former DB is this the kind of team that makes your mouth water knowing they pass so much? Were there any offenses you played against that threw much more than they ran?

Most teams back then were balanced (pro) or ran a little option. The only team I recall being a pass first was Illinois when they had Jeff George. They threw the ball more than most back then, but still they ran it enough to keep teams honest.

Although Nova certainly had his faults, he could also light up a D as we certainly would see from time to time. I have said that I think our game plan this year will be a decidedly run first mentality assuming our O-line can open holes for our stable of running backs. We can literally rotate these backs all game and beat up their D if we can block. I am just not expecting too much through the air from whomever is under center.

I found this part obnoxious:

"WSU's toughest challenger could be the clock, as in the three-hour difference between the Eastern and Pacific Time zones. The contest kicks off at 3:30 p.m. ET, which is better than noon."

Last year they gave us a late kickoff time. making it late at night for our guys.

Everyone knows the body performs its best the earlier in the day. So west coast teams coming east have no problem unless kickoff is at 6AM-9AM our time, 3AM-6AM theirs.

I hate when our fans lurk on another team's site. That said I think we need to worry about our d backfield . Everyone seems to overlook that part of our D but I am not confident there .

Why should it makes a difference to you? ...I don't post, all I do is read what they have to say about our game, their concerns and observations

Should not be an issue, worry about something else
