Washington Grad Transfer Matthew Atewe to Pepperdine

6-9, 230.

Played in 19 games this year:
8.7 mpg
2.2 ppg
2.3 rpg

Played a handful of games at Auburn in 2013-14.

Probably connected to the program associated with Eugene, he is also from Ontario Canada

Have you ever been to Pepperdine? Nah. I'll take Piscataway.
Pepperdine has some of THE finest coeds though lol

Atewe visited South Florida this past weekend. I've been trying to get in touch with him but have had zero luck.

Russ I used to visit when I lived in San Diego. There is nothing like it. Goddesses are part of the California landscape. Young and not so young.. As gruesome as I may be I spent 10 years with one out there. I miss her. I miss California.

No offense to the kid but why should we expect a guy who averaged 9 minutes on a 9-22 Washington team is going to be an improvement over what we have or worth taking minutes away from those players' development?

If you watched CJ Gettys and then watched him before RU, he played 20-22 minutes a game and his game wasn't ideal for that level or conference.....there wasn't a lot of size and players were just faster than CJ.....CJ fit better in the B1G, where he could get physical inside and rebound.

This type of player out of a program like Washington will help someone next year....and Washington's won-loss record has nothing to do with the players ability and talent....if you watch him physically move and compare his footspeed and agility in comparison to Sa, Doorson and Diallo (and CJ), he's physically faster on defense than all four players, can defend screen and roll and has some decent post moves.....he also has shot blocking ability.

I think he immediately goes into a starting lineup, and is at worse a 20 minute a night player in the B1G for RU....he checks all the defensive boxes you want, if you watch the highlight YouTube linked above in this thread.

Reminds me of what Doucoure already has in his skill-set already....as a grad transfer, he's an upgrade over what we have today at the 4 and 5 position.

Agree.....I like what Gettys did, but, this is a big upgrade. Big, strong and can move his feet as a perimeter or interior defender.

Loved the highlight clip.

As said above, he dunks early and often.
Who else on the current roster can throw down like that?

Coach Young will do wonders for his game, I'm sure.

He sat out his soph year at Auburn after injuring a leg and having a rod put into it. He re injured the leg later and this past year only played 19 of 31 games. He looks big and strong and agile so I don't know why he played so little at Washington. He does seem to move better than our centers.

Yup, plus that school is like built into a hillside with a view of the ocean. I lived in NorCal and loved it (except for the cost of living and the taxes...omg the taxes). Now I'm chillin' in Florida...by the way the first 5 letters in California stand for Come And Live In Florida :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Big upgrade to Gettys?

CJ was well revered at UNCW. Some people thought he had a good talent. He definitely was suited more for the big.

Jay youngs eye for bigs is second to none. He sees this kid as someone who can double his production given the minutes.

To me, it is a 9-22 team in washington. I would be surprised if Atewe matched Gettys production here.

Also, he shoots below 600 from the free throw line. This past year, he shot .476.

he could work out, but......

The question you have to ask all grad transfers. Why is he leaving Washington?

I'm moving to San Diego in a couple weeks. Any Rutgers bars out there?

The team is in disarray and a couple of players are leaving.

Also, because he did not receive that much playing time. A senior would prefer more than 8.7 minutes. I think the big ten suits him more. I think Jay Young is one of the best coaches in D1 basketball. The presses we ran this year and how crisp they were at points. He has thing dialed down.

I dislike that free throw percentage. Everything else kind of confirms this kid could potentially be a 5 and 5 kind of player, and give some of what Gettys gave last year.

Getting 8.7 MPG on a bad team has to be concerning.

I realize this is a 1 year commitment so you get the best you can get. Our most pressing need for 2017-18 season is a guard/wing. I really want to believe Sa, Doorson, and Diallo are as good as you are going to find.

I really liked what Gettys did but his lack of mobility in the pick and roll was a big issue. This guy looks like he has the mobility and athleticism to really finish in the lane. He also looks like he would bring some shot blocking and much needed mobility with his defensive presence.

I get that and acknowledge the big ten could be a fit for Atewe. To keep it honest though, he was on a team that we horrid, and scored 3 points, and 2 rebounds a game. Why were his minutes and scoring production that low?

Gettys was on a tournament team, and scored five and five in fifteen minutes per game.

I think he could have a place here, and I fully trust our staff. Saying he is an upgrade though is not very much backed in fact.

I get the sense when we look back at CJ Gettys he will be overrated. He had some strengths to his game, but he definitely lacked on the defensive end and did not provide a shot blocking presence that i'd like a B1G 5 to have.

I think the consensus here is that CJ gettys was a helpful player for us. I don't think many would say he was an outstanding player. He was a good player at a time when the program really needed it.

He possessed intangibles most coaches love in a player.

I really hope Atewe could pan out and he could match the production Gettys gave us. Different players, but if Atewe could grab five boards, and score 7 points, that would be fantastic.

Need to see a low-light video too. 9 mpg?

I think a lot of Coaches ( Jay Young for example ) look at the positives in a highlight film and say, " I can harness that potential" to get this guy to do what we need him to do. Negative play is often a matter of a lack of focus or a lack of consistent effort. Improve those aspects and you "MAY" be left with a lot of positives and fewer negatives.

He is one of the very few big men we have had in the last 20 years who had an offensive skillset, and his interior D was damn good

I will tell you why this is HUGE....

He will play PF for us and will be say a 15 or so minute guy backing up Freeman plus a few more at center. But now this allows Sa to be primarily a center, and then we don't have to expect Doorson and/or Diallo to carry the minutes there. This single move can win us 2 or three games just because we won't be playing the no-defense-because-I-have-four-fouls center at all at the end of games.

Every player on last seasons team had flaws.Gettys was a positive influence on the team and for that he should be commended.Bottom line moving forward every position will require more talented players and that is why recruiting is so important .

I agree with this. One of the few big men with post moves that we have had. I also kind of agree with Green that he is overrated. It is really just that we have lacked anything at all in terms of a center with moves that he looked great to us. However, without him I believe we lose 3 more non conference games last year. His biggest strength was helping us through that portion of the schedule IMO.

Looking at his numbers. What makes people think he is better than what we have? What about the development of current players on the roster?

What if sa, doorson or diallo changed their names and wore a Missouri uniform and hit the transfer market...they would all of a sudden become the answer.

Its not about him being a star, its about spreading the minutes of two positions to five players instead of four. Now we aren't playing no defense because of foul trouble.

Doorson and Diallo combined for 2.1 ppg in 17.1 mpg.

This tells me at least one player from the five will transfer in the next five weeks.

You cannot roll with Shaq,Diallo, and this kid.

You need to let one go. I think one of those players would want to go.Just my opinion. Well see what happens.

It's not like last year where you are still waiting to see what you can get out of a kid.

If you look at a WAR statistic for Gettys I think he would have a positive number as he contributed more than his replacement would have.

He scored 74 points in 2 years

@Greene Rice FIG I know you are a kenpom "stats" guy. Just curious, for the average team without an elite Center, how much productivity do you think comes from the Center position in a 40 minute game ?

Without researching it.....my "guess" is that your average team ( without an elite center) gets about 15 points and 13 rebounds from the Center position.

Until Naz Reid gets on campus, I think Rutgers just needs to piece together 3 serviceable guys that can get that or close to it.
