And they spanked us pretty good on opening day at Rutgers. Still feel optimistic that we can pull the upset.

well I wouldn't call it a spanking. We did everything to win that game except score. But it doesn't matter 'cause we lost so the take away message holds!
Not sure if it was that big , but that was a spanking . Two season openers in a row where we took it on the chin IIRC
I remember Gary Nova being quoted after the Fresno game and saying it was "fun" and fans took him to task for saying losing a game was fun.

And how would one KNOW that since the thread did not mention a date? Most fans don't remember the point spread of games from 7-8 years ago. But I'm proud of you for remembering. And my post was not referring to the same game.

That was Cincy in 2009. Fresno was 2008. RU got blown out at home on ESPN two times to open the season. Fresno was the first, UNC was the 2nd (the game with the student giving the camera the finger). Then we went to Annapolis, lost to Navy, and Teel took a swing at Glenn Lee. 2008 could've been a huge year if not for that ugly start.

Fresno had 10 returning starters on offense in the 2008 game. There was talk that they were going to be a BCS buster that year. There was no way Rutgers was going to be favored by 3 TDs.
Ugly start but fantastic finish. i still have fond memories of the Birmingham, Alabama Bowl. those last games of the season were the best i've seen our offense perform. still remember hanging 50 on Pitt.
Al you might be thinking of UMD in 2007. Believe they were 2+ TDs dogs and beat us going away.
I remember driving up to NJ for my friends wedding form DC listening to the Pitt game. Unbelievable. Teel was straight fire for the rest of the regular season starting with Pitt. If only the offense started clicking for the Cincinnati game, as that would meant a Big East Championship
