Watching JUCO guard Devonte Bandoo tonight

There is too much turnover on rosters these days to rely solely on high school players. You're going to be constantly in a situation where you're going to need to plug in gaps with physically mature guys that can contribute at a high level immediately especially with a 13 man scholarship limit rather than 15 from 30 years ago. You need to do what it takes to win games. Win some games and talented high schoolers with the ability to contribute right away will be more willing to sign up in the future. Winning matters. If having some Jucos helps you, you do it.

Let’s keep in mind JUCO 42% is not 42% in B1G. Close outs are a bit different

I am sorry, but I find it a terrible sign that we are fishing in the JUCO pond. Not the way I’d like to see a program built.

maybe not built, but they are a god way to fill some gaps for 1-2 years

Basically, if he was good, he would not be at a Juco.

Yeah, which is a bit reductionist. Lots of reasons kids end up at JUCO that aren't due to HS performance/talent/ability - or players that just blossom late. There are solid players that come out of the JUCO ranks each year - the trick is getting the *right* one.

There is a lot of anti-JUCO sentiment around because the JUCO player is an unknown to the fan base....There is also an anti-transfer sentiment as well.

The questions are Michigan, Indiana, Minnesota, Nebraska and others all use transfers in, JUCO's and have had some level of success in reshaping their rosters....I am fine since the FG from 3, and FT shooting are at least positive....that along with the other schools interested tends to tell me the player would be a contributor that isn't exactly there is get in the way of the existing pieces, but compete and be a scorer if necessary.

Maybe the kid was hurt in high school. Remember the kid RU recruited who was shot in high school?

Michigan is the one to use in a debate. Minnesota may not be the best team to use in the pro JUCO debate.

especially Kansas this year
the transfer and JUCO market has heated up the last few seasons

Lots of reasons to go Juco...
- Academics (probably one of the biggest ones)
- Lack of talent / ability (drew no interest from Div-I programs in HS)
- Lack of HS exposure (played in weak/remote conference or overseas)
- Injury during junior/senior HS season (Div-I interest waned)
- Started playing late (big upside, but only started playing as a junior or senior)

And I'm sure there are others, but those are top of mind.

That is my worry. 90% that stuff. 10% conpetition
So you're more worried about taking a Juco because 90% of the time it was because his grades weren't good enough coming out of high school vs. 10% he wasn't a good enough player coming out of high school? I would be more concerned in taking a 2 year player if the opposite percentages were true.

After Freeman and Nigel Johnson I thought Pikiell would go down the path he took with Baker and Myles Johnson. I suppose if 2-3 roster spots unexpectedly open up you really have 5 options

1. JUCO
2. HS seniors that are still on the board
3. grad transfers
4. transfers
5. leave the spot open

Sometimes you may be better off having guys like Doorson and Souf stay because then you are forced to pick from 1 of the 5.

April 23rd we picked up Kiss. I assume that was Nigel Johnson's spot. That empty spot haunted us all year. I think/hope an empty spot wouldn't be as devastating next year, but i can see why Pikiell might want to go the JUCO route this time after being burned last year with the Kiss decision. Not saying Kiss decision was a bad one.....time will tell.

While yes, I guess Pikiell was "Burned" this season, I think it was clear both with taking Kiss, redshirting Myles Johnson annnnnnnnnd recruiting a second transfer in Vance Jackson that Pikiell is taking the long view of this program. He could have used Johnson this year but made sure to keep him on the bench. He probably could have landed a JUCO instead of Kiss--but who knows. He believes in what Kiss can offer over the next 3 years. Next year is a bigger season and he's clearly recruiting like it's time to take a step forward. It'd be nice if Corey comes back and a scholarship or two open up some other way, but we'll see.

While Kiss may be looked as a spot that was wasted, there wasnt a SG on the roster for 2018-2020 last spring....we were working very hard for Montez Mathis and Kiss actually leverages both SG and SF (Thiam).

While we still dont have a bonafide starter at SF today, we at least now have both spots covered with Kiss....

This JUCO isnt locked in yet but covers RU for this year (if Sanders isnt back) and potentially an option if you are looking for someone really ready to play beyond 18-19...

It also doesnt prevent 2019 from being a PG focused option for recruiting, since the 2019 PG would only have the JUCO in place for that kids freshman season....

If Indiana offers him that's a very worthy opponent on the recruiting trail

Deshawn Freeman also went Juco as did Steve Worthy, Joel Salvi and many other athletes. Every situation is different. Freeman will be graduating in May.

I like Bandoos game. He takes care of himself, and will not need any time to adjust to physicality that the game requires.

Combo guard, but think it would work out between him and Baker.
