It doesn’t seem obvious enough as it’s going on 8 years since we’ve actually had one. Please recruit shooters. We have enough althletes who play basketball.

This statement is a constant on this board and I totally agree, however, Baker, Thiam, Kiss, and now even Eugene are good shooters. This is the best shooting talent we’ve had in years. They just were horrible today.

My thought is I don’t think it’s a shooter that we are missing. We need a scorer that can get a bucket when you need one. A guy that can take over a game on any given night like a Powell. I thought Geo was that guy but he’s had a very rough stretch after the Miami game. We are one Powell caliber player away from being able to really break through and move up the standing in conference.

The best shooting talent we've had in years means what... they shoot above 25%? Good shooter s are generally much more consistent than our guys.

It means that Eugene, Baker, and Thiam are all shooting above 40% from three. Kiss isn’t far below that. They had (Baker especially) a brutal day.

I think you’re 1-for-4. Kiss was a 27% shooter for 3s, and 40% from the floor, at Quinnipiac. He is not a shooter. Thiam has shown little ability to get his shot off against decent opposition. Baker is playing put of position and is losing his shot. Eugene is a decent shooter for his size.

Yes and no. You need a guy like Powell or a true point guard. Geo IS a shooter. The problem is he’s playing pg. Unless you’re Steph Curry, it’s tough to be shooter and pg at the same time. Geo should play point less. Frankly, I think it hurts his growth. Once we have Young next year Geo won’t be playing point.

I agree----Rutgers had good looks.

I would also say this-----when looking at stats toss the walkover games out and look at them against decent competition.

Because effective January 1st all the opponents are pretty good or better.

That was my one dominant thought watching that game. What is that game like if SHU doesn't have Powell?

We're a good well-coached team that needs a bonafide offensive star. How many programs have such a star? I don't know.. but we'll beat those teams once we also have one.

Fordham had one. So did Seton. And probably every team we face in the league. This season was lost the moment Sanders left. What Pike needs most is one signature recruit, a bonafide star. I'm not asking for LeBron. I'm asking for Sanders, Carter, Douby, Coleman. Without a player of that caliber, RU will have trouble ever cracking the .500 barrier.

Sanders was part of the shooting problem last year.

we need to finish around the rim

So true. Most of the good teams have guys that get the rebound and slam it home. For the most part, our guys get the offensive rebound and can't even lay the ball back up for a layup.

When guys don't slam it home, they should be taken out right away to send the message to go up strong.

Best of Luck,
Groz

Wrong. Nice try.

Against Seton Hall, we had many more good looks than they did. The difference was they hit their good looks and we didn’t.
Not sure what game you were watching but we didn't have that many good looks. Defense for SHU did a good job all game closing out on Baker, Kiss and Thiam. Most of our three's were taken with either a hand in our face or further out than we would have liked. In fact, most of our shots the whole game were forced. That's why we were shooting under 30% in the second half.

I disagree. We missed tons of wide open looks. Powell was making shots with hands on his face. We just lack shooters.

Lol! You are hilarious. We may have had more good shots than Seton Hall had total shots. And Powell made a lot of tough shots.

Not just a shooter, but an NBA first round draft pick type of shooter that can hit big shots in big situations. Players that can make a shot with a hand in the face when the game is on the line. That's the 1 missing player.

I'd rather have a Douby or a Coleman. They could shoot. Sanders is typical of many RU guards over the years; an athletic player who can't shoot. You're not winning anything in today's game with players like that.

Thaim needs to be consistently in low double figures for this team to have success. $$$$

Why bother.

RU chow

We shot 79 shots yesterday

Think about how high that Number

Count the number of makable shots we missed in the paint and the number of wide open ...and I mean wide open threes...we missed

If we shoot 40% yesterday ...we win by 12

I’ll take my chances with these guys getting those same looks. Given that opportunity ten times...those guys hit enough to win at least 7 against a big east team on the road that went to the ncaa the last three years.

Frustrating day for sure...given the rivalry, but not because we didn’t get good looks. Just didn’t drain them

And this is why he should not be playing the amount of minutes he does...because he can’t.

For the minutes he gets, he cannot get himself open enough in our offense to get the shots off to get 10-12 points a game.

I'd settle for someone who can make open shots.

It has yet to be proven that any of those players are good shooters. Truly good shooters make open shots.

Most successful teams have more than one go to scorer and Rutgers has none. Its not just bad luck that Rutgers has come in last every season as a member of the B1G.

Here's a weird quirk: We haven't yet had a game where our 3P% has been between 32-41.

60%
54%
27%
42%
23%
25%
31%

I think that is highly doubtful. Barring the few elite programs.. how many teams really have 2 great scorers like Powell? I think we have some guys who can score.. we have the support that a top scorer can rely on.

-We're tall.. we have rebounders..
-We don't seem to have many issue bring the ball up..
-While we have problems with assists.. I think those problems are due largely to missing shots.. and playing defense hard so that there are fewer possessions.. we keep the score low, relatively speaking

What we don't have is a guy like Powell who can just GO OFF and change the game.

Suppose you switched Powell and Baker? Who wins? Rutgers does. This is not to detract from Baker.. he's good.. we need him but we do not have a Powell.

Last year Powell played 22 minutes and scored 5 points against us.. this year he played 37 minutes and scored 28.

Maybe somebody on our current roster can match that next year.

BTW.. Powell was a 4-star recruit from Trenton. 81st in ESPN's top 100.

We need to start pulling in an ESPN Top 100 here and there.

Last year Seton Hall had 3 other go to scorers which meant Powell was a complementary player receiving less playing time but still a scoring threat .

Well.. we beat them last year. I would think we had enough scorers to be competitive.

We need the GREAT scorer who makes everyone better. That's the missing piece.

I think asking for multiple great scorers is a little much. Of course that would be better. You might as well ask for multiple McDonalds All-Americans. As our teams is configured and coached today.. the one thing we are missing is the lights-out shooter. Add him in and that changes everything.

It's not like we haven't recruited shooters. Sometimes it doesn't pan out.

Mike Williams was a 3 point shooter coming in but ended up being terrible from 3 surprisingly. Harper was the best shooter in the state and won the teams midnight madness 3 point contest. He was a shooter. Ron has missed a few real close ones lately and is due for a break out. Let's hope he finds his stroke bc he has done well from 2 and creating off the dribble. If he starts nailing his 3's he is an all around offensive threat

Kiss shoots too many threes.

He ended his maac season 3-24 from three in his last five games.

We shot the lights out in the first 2 or 3 games against bad teams, and it seems since then that the shooting and the shooting percentages have been trending ever downward. Now, some players are still over 40%. It'll be interesting to see whether they continue to drop as we move into full-on league play.
