October 22 is far from "the middle of winter". I've been to Minn in January & Feb multiple times ....THAT'S the middle of winter.

Downtown Minneapolis has most of the buildings connected by catwalks so you don't have to go outside if it is too cold. that was a Godsend.

Can you still use the catwalks if you're not a model, or do you have to use the skywalks?

Having RU as Homecoming fits perfectly in their schedule. They're away the weeks before and after. I doubt they 'd want Iowa two weeks earlier which will be a hot ticket anyway. It would boil down to RU or Purdue two weeks later. Only other option would be Colorado State in their 3rd game. Does the B1G play OOC for homecoming?

Anyone seeing drawings of the Vikings new stadium. Looks awesome. And indoors

I think he was trying to make a joke regarding with basketball references.

KNightfan7 got it right - good time in their schedule. Two weeks later, home against Purdue, is first week in November (no way), Iowa not a good idea, and end of Sept. might be too early when it's not an "only" option.

Two road trips planned for this year, @ Huskies and @ Gophers plus 3 trips back to HPSS. Can't wait to see result of new staff.

Same here. Seattle and the San Juan Islands already booked.
Need to make plans for Minneapolis.

just booked our flilghts. $312 out of Philly. I have a friend who travels to Minn/StPaul often, she said to jump on that price because it can only get more expensive. It's $306 out of Newark..

@jmc11201 our flight gets in at 10:30am and we are staying downtown on the rail line. anything of interest to fill a half day?

I live in Minnesota and am happy to answer any questions people may have. Late October could be anything weather wise, but likely to be reasonably tolerable and could be downright pleasant.
Do you have any recommendations for craft beer spots in the area? Is it easy to get around without renting a car? If the schedule works out, we plan on going to a Wild game and a Gophers hockey game in addition to the Rutgers football game, so hopefully we can hit those spots without needing to drive. I was there in fall 2009 and remember hearing talk of expanding the light rail. Has that happened?

That is a reasonable flight. Worth checking out Frontier out of Trenton. Inexpensive, direct, and Airbus planes...but only a few flights a week and maybe not able to book this far in advance.

As for filling half a day, shouldn't be a problem. What do you want/like to do? Closer to the game, I was planning on offering some pointers and ideas for people.

Check out Surly Brewery. Just built in the last year or two...surprisingly good food, beautiful brewery space, lots of good beer.

A car isn't necessary, but could be handy. There is light rail from the airport to downtown, so if you plan accordingly, you can get to your hotel without a car. To get to Surly or most other places, a car is nice, but a few taxi/Uber rides will get you the convenience of a car with less of the expense.

As for the light rail, there are two main lines now. One from Mall of America/Airport to downtown, and another from downtown minneapolis to downtown st paul (green line). The green line, which was finished last year, will also get you to TCF Field, where the Gophers play.

. Frontier flights not out yet & I didn't want to risk losing a good price on the flight. I'll just wait until your suggestions. I've always found that to be the best way to see the cities.

Awesome, thanks! I forgot Surly was in Minnesota, I actually got to try some of their beers a few years ago when they had a special tap takeover in Philly during Philly Beer Week, good stuff. Good to hear the line to St. Paul did end up getting built.

Have been there a couple of times and had the Juicy Lucy and been to the Mall of America.
But the Twin Cities' greatest product are The Replacements. Here singing about the skyway.

Looking forward to going to the Minny game. Been there twice, great places to hang out, but i'll drink something other than Grain Belt.

Thanks for the Juicy Lucy advice. How about other iconic Twin Cities foods?
Is a Friday Night Fish Fry on order? Do folks actually eat Lutefish or is that just something to trip up gullible visitors?

Walleye. Every time I went to St.Paul/Minneapolis I had Walleye. it's pretty darn good.

I think lutefish is something eaten up north...I've never had it.

Juicy Lucy is pretty famous/popular. Walleye is definitely a local fish that is popular, although it never did anything for me.

Bachelor Farmer is a very good restaurant with a Scandanavian focus.

Another good spot is Spoon & Stable opened by Gavin Kaysen, who was head chef for Daniel Boulud in NYC before coming back home to Minnesota.

I'm headed out there for the Minn game as well. Have tons of family spread throughout the state so will be spending time with them, but might be looking for a tailgate to join - though I might end up in a family Gopher tailgate. The Juicy Lucy is delicious. Walleye is a must have (even if just Walleye bites appetizer somewhere).

Hopefully there'll be a hockey game for the Wild or the especially for the Gophers mixed in as well (or shoot down to Mankato to see Minnesota State).
