We've Now Got 2 Commits for 2016....What Do We Need to Win?

In all fairness though, the same guys saying these are good recruits are usually the same ones who say they weren't quality recruits when they don't pan out and end up blamin facilities.

I like these guys. Potential under-the-radar types, but EJ's coaching will be all the difference. Ohams and Thiam are also project-types of players. Development is paramount.

you cant tell me that the Williams/Doorson class was top 50..
That class was Williams, Doorson, Diallo, Daniels, Foreman, and Johnson. Williams, Diallo Foreman and Daniels were 3 stars. Foreman was a Rivals top 150 player.

There are two sides. One says they are busts based on offer list. The other says they have potential (these are optimists). One side hopes for the best. The other side is tired of under the radar project types because they don't pan out at Rutgers.

Still, when was the last time Rutgers signed. 6-6 shooting guard?

Thiam is not a project. He can shoot and plays great D

Disagree. From what I've read he has some skills but is still developing fundamentals. Despite having some range and some handling ability, he needs to learn the game more. Needs a good coach at the next level to take him further. Furthermore, none of us have ever seen any tape of him. Everything we hear about him is hearsay. Even recruiting guys say that they "heard" this and that.

Don't get me wrong. I find him to be an intriguing prospect, but there's little concrete evidence out there about him.

Also, we're going to have 5 spot depth issues next year with only Doorson and Diallo.

No, I'll disagree as I have seen him play

How is this B1G "talent"? Please help me out here, thank you, because all I see are 2 unrated and un-ranked kids. Not good when you're mixing them in with this current roster. Sorry, but Eddie MUST do better than this, bottom line.

AreYouNuts- believe me, I am more on your side with these recruits. Simply saying these are players that can play at this level as upper classman if they develop, which doesn't seem to happen here. But given our situation, we aren't getting rivals 150 players here

Could you expound for us please? There's literally two lines about him out there on the interwebs. Would love to hear more since you've seen him in person.

I just get the general feeling he's more of a physical tools guy with a jumper. that doesn't necessarily mean he's a player who can jump into D-1 right away

lol okay guys...whatever you 2 "experts" have to say (the 2 who are literally frothing at their mouths over these 2 kids...)...I hope to hell I'm wrong, and they end up being able to provide minutes 3-4 years from now, but as of right now this is a lousy class, period, sorry.

What do you expect from Rutgers? Seriously. Four and five stars every year based on what? Our awesome fan base? Our sparkling new arena? Winning history? Losing streaks? Scandals? Fair weather fans? Tailgaters and late arrivals?

Maybe Hobbs fixes this but let's not pretend you know what a good recruit is or isn't.

Just Ike you love Ash now, but how about when the going gets tough and recruiting isn't to your liking.

You're expressing blind faith in Ash who has never been a head coach let alone a power 5 HC.

Yet you are an Ash fan. And this confidence is based solely on the fact he was Urban Meyers assistant? Because Syracuse wanted him?

Just like some fans tell themselves Rutgers is NYC and media part of the world. That's just marketing and know no one cares about Rutgers in NYC market. But keep telling yourselves that

You're a hopeful fan. Just like those rooting for the Dailey, Tripp and Issa types.

Of course many of us have "faith" in Ash, but there are reasons for that. It is not "blind faith."

As for Eddie, he has enough of a track record here for people to form an opinion. His coaching has been far below par, and has shown nothing to indicate he will be successful as a college coach.

I'm pretty pleased with Eddie's recruiting. People keep on forgetting that players like Goode are only freshman. He'll be solid come junior year.
Are you kidding??? You said you're pretty pleased with Eddie's recruiting and then mentioned Goode in the next sentence??? My GOD.

It's faith.

And liking a players potential is faith too.

Are people skewering Ash like some are Dailey? No You're going to wait it it out, like some will do with recruits.

This has nothing to do with Jordan for me. I'm talking about having faith in Dailey's abilities and skill set.

Rutgers wants expect sexy high-rated recruits with big offer list. Well first you need to something to sell. And please tell me why top 100 kids will pass on winning programs for Rutgers. Better invest in brown paper bags.

If Goode is solid as a junior, he'll be wearing a Radford or UNC-Asheville shirt. He's a really bad example to use. Try Diallo or Doorson ... maybe.

Welcome to ignore,., at least you could try to take part in a reasonable discussion about basketball and recruiting without making negative comments against a current player and against recruits that decided to play for RUTGERS and try to help the program.

No need to respond, your comment won't even be on my screen.

.

I stopped right there. Let's not pretend that YOU know what a "good recruit is or isn't," either, okay?

You sound like the guys who, for 3 years, attempted to say that EVERY 2-star and low 3-star kid, despite an incredible lack of BCS, let alone P5 offers, were the 2nd coming. Give me a break. Again, MAYBE 1 of these 2 ends up providing a few minutes - you never know - but as of right NOW saying this class is any good, whatsoever, makes you sound foolish. Sorry.

Do you end every post with "Sorry."

Sorry.

My bigger issue is you basing everything on offers. But I'm sure you'd spin it as a positive for Ash when that day comes.

And I'm not here defending Jordan. I'm down on him. I'm defending Dailey and players like him.

That's the reality at Rutgers and you can still win games without a four-star on the roster. Maybe not with Jordan as HC.

Here's what you're missing:

Odds are that kids without P5 offers are not going to pan out as contributors, let alone stars, at this level of play. Do they? Absolutely, no question, and we'd all be happy if they do, but, ODDS ARE one, let alone 2, in the same hoops class, won't, and we really can't afford that in this program right now, I think you'd agree, right?

Here's what you're missing. Kids without p5 offers don't have to become "stars."

How many programs in Rutgers state land stars on annual basis?

Rutgers needs to win first.

Chicken or the egg.

We need a blend of recruiting and coaching but not even the football program lands four stars and you expect basketball to do so before it wins with less?

Honestly we won't know what works until it works. 25 years without NCAAs and more scnacals than NITs

Rutgers is DePaul.

P5 (recruits) doesn't mean the same in hoops as it does in football.

Bingo.....most teams only have a few spots per year and then they only offer based on need. If they don't need a 6'6" guard, they will not offer one. They only offer a limited number of recruits per year. You will always see a lot of very good players without big school offers.

Welcome to the club!

Kids with offers like Dailey have done well at mid-majors, and occasionally at P5 programs, with solid coaching. Not a knock on the kid, Best of luck and hope it works out for him and Eddie. Like Goode, why not grab a B1G offer if you get one?

Dailey could be a useful part when Hobbs hires a HC after the 16-17 season who has a clue about running a college program. Yes, all of the injuries mean that Hobbs can save a million plus on a buyout by bringing Eddie back for a hopefully injury-free Year #4 to demonstrate his staff's development chops.

Dailey was offered by Michigan and Illinois for 2017. Bo Ryan also liked him and he had an eye for under appreciated players. He was also offered byNorthern Iowa for 2016 which dances better than a lot of B10 schools. He is a very good under rated wing. So is the younger Wesson brother. Their needs now are an insider that can play like Hamady and a combo forward. They are out there we just have to get them. I would expect one transfer out for eventual lack of playing time which will befall him next year. We have to give that scholarship to a fifth year so we have one for 2017. If you notice, we have no junior year.

To the extent you aren't noticing, this is exactly what recruiting looks like when you whiff in the fall and are left to only scrambe for recruits in the spring signing season. Every kid comes with at least one qualifier, usually more, as to why they've been missed by other schools, what injury or background problem has hampered them and will be cleared up, how good programs wanted him but not just yet or circumstance unexpectedly changed, etc., etc., etc.

None of this is a surprise.

To answer the question of the OP, we need better and more recruits to win. And we need them at almost every position. I can't imagine how that is going to be accomplished through spring signings.

There are old and new arguments on recruiting.....

A) RU winds up shooting "too high" on the recruiting ranking list, going up against programs that when desperate for a recruit, have better things to offer vs RU....nicer facilties, better off the court benefits etc....when RU is chasing that player and doesn't get him and bypasses 15 other kids that can ultimately help in a couple of years, then RU has to fall back and take kids that really are not players that can immediately help or play at this level......fans argued that RU was shooting too high and we let kids get away to a St. Joes, Temple, etc.

B) When RU actually follows the plan of getting a kid like a Laurent, Dailey, Mike Williams, Jahlil Tripp type of player that is not an immediate starter or double digit scorer like Corey Sanders or Deshawn Freeman, then the complaints are that RU doesn't have immediate "difference makers"......to do that, RU would have to sign 3-4 top 75 kids in order to "satisfy the masses", who are really more interested in whether a kid "has other offers"....as if we need Maryland, Michigan and others to get involved, to then justify that kids talent.

C) We actually are doing both.....both A and B and it's with mixed results.....we landed Sanders and Freeman and landed Parker ahead of when other schools either decided his injury wasn't worth the risk.....then another school like Tennessee scoops him up after he decommits from RU and it becomes that problem of falling victim to larger paying schools, with nicer facilities or better established coaches like Rick Barnes.

We can't have fans arguing both sides of the fence and saying "see, RU is now taking another project"......Tripp and Dailey are not projects.....just because fans want to say or see an offer from Michigan, Wisconsin and Maryland for Dailey as some sort of justification for the offer, doesn't mean he cannot contribute down the road here.

Other programs are not looking at these kids as immediate starters...they would take them as developmental players. RU has the option of becoming BOTH a place where you can play and develop.

It was ironic that when we played Wisconsin earlier this month, they landed a RU target named Charlie Thomas that we hoped to land here BUT went to high school in Wisconsin. Solid looking player, but he probably played about 8 or so minutes against RU and looked OK for a freshman, nothing at all memorable or to write home about....... he is not a contributor for Wisconsin at this time, but was not recruited for a starters role either.

He will put in the work and see what happens. BUT he probably plays 25 minutes a game if he went to RU, because of injuries we have, but his ability to be a difference maker now is not going to happen as a freshman. He is like Laurent here, someone that has shown flashes but clearly not expected to be an all-B1G player, landed off the radar or outside the proverbial Top 150.

At Wisconsin, Thomas perhaps he develops into a starter in two years and keeps the train rolling there......at RU, he would be crucified for not being a difference maker instantly in the program. It's really all about perception and unrealistic expectations too early in the career for kids.

I don't have any argument with any of the recruits signed, BUT I always understand that 33% of all recruits at ALL schools, don't pan out, regardless of their recruiting level. I know Kentucky and others may have different levels of talent, but it's the reality. So if you sign 3 kids per class, one is certainly going to get the most out of their ability, one will do OK and one just won't pan out or may develop elsewhere if they transfer down to a level where they can earn more minutes etc.

I'd rather have both Tripp and Dailey, with Laurent as those SG/SF types that can eventually develop. Perhaps one turns into a starter that can help as a junior and the other does the same thing. Maybe one falls off and isn't going to cut it.

I don't have an issue with the talent being brought in.....I have concerns about whether Jordan can get them to defend. I see Dailey as a kid like Seton Hall's Veer Singh.....a shooter that needs playmakers around him to get him shots.....Singh isn't a starter for this year or next year, but perhaps is that player down the road. RU is taking the right approach and it's tough to watch what we are seeing....but it's not a lack of talent.

Congrats to Dailey and Tripp, my NYC contact absolutely loves Tripp's toughness and willingness to defend. We don't need a big man in this class at all, we have two already on the roster. RU needs players that can get down the court and create offense and show the ability to potentially guard someone.

Mike - you mean someone like etou ? :)
Amazing how many "experts" on this board thought it was no big deal losing an athletic big man that can score and now we are desperate for anyone with size. Look at the lineup we have been trotting out and tell me etou wasn't a huge lose for a program that routinely loses talent to transfer.

Read somewhere else that guy who covers Ohio said he is good player, I will take his word over you guys who have never seen him play.

Favorite player on the team last year. Highest potential.

Honestly I don't see much of a difference between developmental players and projects. But that could just be me.

Project players don't get anywhere unless they are coached the right way by the right coach. My fear is that we have too many of these types of players that we begin to say things like facilities won't let us bring in better players.

I just hope that they are more Dane Miller or Mike Poole than Pat Jackson or Malik Kone.
