What happened to the “sleeping giant”?

Yes it's still there. Just trying to recover from the Ash induced coma and the muscular atrophy caused by it that lasted four years. Right now in the physical therapy stage.
Never ceases to amaze me how we have some fans who seem to find pleasure in the program's struggles. Of course once it turns around they will be among the first to jump onto the bandwagon

First time I heard that phrase was during a basketball game in the mid to late 80's and I think the announcer Bucky Waters said it. I had just moved back to the east coast, hadn't been following RU that closely for 10 years from California and got kind of excited/encouraged. So that was at least 32 years ago. Ugh.

We won't say which sleeping giant is going to start Saturdays game, but they're all dressed to play.

Until we have a coach who can recruit New Jersey really well--and Schiano is not that guy though his fans think he is--we will still be asleep.
According to the attached 247 rankings from the class of 2022 RU got 8 out of the top 27 recruits in the state (approx. 30%) and the class of 2023 is down as it's only 5 out of the top 28 (18%).
Half of the 2022 class are offensive linemen who are being redshirted and going through the S&C program. I'm guessing we'll start to see their impact next year.
Not bad for a program which hasn't had a .500 season in nearly a decade IMHO.

Tom Young said it when he was introduced as the new basketball coach.

Recruit well. Does not have to be NJ. We are a Big Ten team. Get talented athletes who want to play on a big stage. We have years of evidence that focusing on NJ recruits is ineffective. We have never had sustained success going that route.

Midwest and NJ for linemen. Backs and WRs...Florida, Florida, Florida!!!

You all took the toothless wonder's bait. Now he's going to blow his load into his redneck handkerchief before wiping his nose with it.

My thoughts on the OP are illustrated by the words of Mark Twain (or Abe Lincoln, no one is completely sure).
"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt"

Hey @RUaMoose .
You also might want to check the accuracy of your signature line. It wasn't even accurate before Greg set the new record.

Coaching wins at RU
Greg Schiano - 80
Doug Graber - 29
Kyle Flood/Dick Anderson - 27

Everyone talks about Gavin's development but these kids are a big part of any future success. If two of them are ready to step in and play that should be a big upgrade.

Allen and Asamoah at least should be able to contribute in 2023.

I still remember the quote in si late 90s, 'there's not an ad east of the Mississippi who's not afraid of waking the potential that is Rutgers football'

Until we have a coach who can recruit New Jersey really well--and Schiano is not that guy though his fans think he is--we will still be asleep.
It’s not a good year in NJ, they will recruit outside the state more in those years. Next year is suppose to be stronger in NJ.

Is RU still considered a sleeping giant in football? Haven’t heard that term in a long time.
Funny how you phrased that question “in football”. Fact of the matter is all of Rutgers sports have been elevated by joining the Big Ten. It’s funny what an infusion of money and exposure can do for a cash strapped athletic department.
We saw some signs with the Olympic sports now men’s basketball. Who could ever imagine the RAC one of the toughest places to play in all of college basketball?
Football is on its way too. It just takes a little longer to get it going.
When you have an program that has great exposure, financial backing, in a talent rich area
with the potential of millions of followers ( within a 2 hour drive) you have the makings for a sleeping giant.

Is it too early to start thinking about where to put the statue?

Check winning percentage.
While some might argue about how Flood couldn't win so much the farther away he got from Schiano's players and recruits, we can all agree that he hands-down wins the best incognito outfit while meeting a dance appreciation instructor about a player who was later charged with assault award. He's on that Mount Rushmore for sure.
