What happened to the “sleeping giant”?

. . .

That includes an 8-5 season in the B1G with a bowl win.
How'd he follow that up the next year when he was four years into his tenure, the roster of Schiano recruits had almost completely cycled out of the program, and he was mostly working with his own recruits?

greg did by leaving 11th hour despite assurances and the admin for not having back up plan
Yeah....what other college football head coach would jump at the opportunity to be an NFL head coach ? Rutgers football history is full of head coaches who turned down an NFL head coaching position. That list is actually longer than the list of Rutgers head football coaches that have recruited as successfully as GS has.

Before NIL? It was still there. It's just that the school made bad hires and then refused to spend the money to correct them when it became obvious they were bad hires.

Now that the current NIL system is in place? No, Rutgers is not a sleeping giant. That ship has sailed. There is literally nothing you can do to change the composition of your alumni base overnight.

To those here who still maintain that we just need to recruit better within the state to be successful, the 247Sports ranking chart shows why this is just not true. The chart lists the highest 47 recruits in NJ. Of the 47, none are 5 star, 4 are four star, and the remaining 43 are three star. We complain that we can't recruit 4 and 5 star kids, but there aren't any instate.

I don't think anyone thinks that we just need to recruit better in New Jersey. RU definitely needs to significantly improve its overall recruiting....PARTICULARLY in New Jersey. I thought we actually made improvement in that area with the 2022 class. But thus far it looks like we've taken a step back with the 2023 class.

The sleeping giant mantra will be dead until we get out of this iteration of the B10 East. This program either needs to get away from the 3 headed OSU-UM-PSU monster or a find a miracle where 1 or 2 of those programs are hit with serious sanctions or coaching changes. I'd imagine it is 10x easier rooting for a program like Illinois where you genuinely have a chance to go to the B10 championship every year.

Is RU still considered a sleeping giant in football? Haven’t heard that term in a long time.
Honest answer is “we don’t know”.

we hired the right guy to build us a scrappy competitive team but we are poorly equipped to compete in the world of Unregulated Portal/NIL.

Building a solid 7-9 win team from mostly 3* talent that you develop is going to be harder if there isn’t a limit on the number of times a student/athlete can enter the portal without sitting a year.

NIL + unbridled transfers is a disaster.

We can all debate all day but “them’s the facts”.

I’m still bought in 100% but recognizing it’s a lot tougher hill than it was 3 years ago.

Nothing has changed for me. I still think we can be respectable and better. I've said it many times here. The opportunity to raise yourself on the landscape has never been better. NIL/portal make no difference to that and if anything have added slightly more parity from the top on down

This looks like the first year possibly Alabama/Clemson might not be in the playoffs. I see new faces like Tenn/TCU up there. Cincy just made it in a 4 team playoff. You've actually seen some small chinks in the Alabama armor the last couple years. I see multiple PAC12 teams up in the top 10-15 area. I see teams lower down the totem pole doing things they haven't done in a decade. Opportunity is there, just have to capitalize on it. The chance is there whether it's GS or someone else in the future, there is opportunity.

1. HC Schiano was absolutely right in accepting the TB job. He would have been dumb not to leave.

2. HC Schiano leaving the team in late January 2012 (a week before signing day) crippled the team in regards to hiring a successor. It was well after the normal hiring period and Rutgers had few options while scrambling to keep committed recruits.

Both are true at the same time.

Sorta like GS only being ‘successful’ once BC, Miami and VT left the BE ? What you’re saying is, he can’t win unless our competition weakens.

Water seeks its own level. The bottom half of the Big10, no matter the configuration, is much stronger than the bottom of the BigEast that 1.0 could beat.

Well right now we are still drowning.

Hopefully the swimming lessons will be helpful going forward.🙂

We got drugged and takes a while to wake up. It’s a new roofy drug call Ash. Guaranty to keep you asleep for a long time.

The Sleeping Giant needs to see a cardiologist. Look for a CPAP device to be prescribed. It will cut down on snoring and minimize getting up at night.

The trick will be Greg Schiano recruiting... not recruiting players.. recruiting NJ businesses and large corporations with a big presence in New Jersey.

Find a way get the politicians to make a special consideration on taxes for NIL deals with the State University's athletes... hell, include non-athletes too.. Honor College kids.. whatever. The money spent on NIL should be considered ADVERTISING costs, right? 100% deductible as a legitimate business expense.

Tell these firms that the time has never been better to get into business with the next LeBron, Jordan, Tom Brady, etc. etc. In the past, Rutgers was not Bama.. not even Penn State. Sponsoring Rutgers was going with teh underdog. But now? All NIL needs is MONEY. They can be responsible for making Rutgers a powerhouse... and they can yield the benefits from associations with the athletes as well as Rutgers itself. They can get deals on tickets for their employees and execs. And if they help create a real WINNER for New Jersey.. New Jersey will reward them.

THAT is how we can become an NIL winner. There is no other way.

The executives at these corporations are alumni of our competitors. Hell, we can barely get J&J interested in the school and they are literally across the street (and have been for 130 years) ... and the Johnsons own the freaking local professional football team.

It has never been easier for companies with large local offices to create a top college football program in their own backyard. If that is seen as being in their interests, it should be far easier to sell that now than it has been in the past.
