What HS game RU watching today?

BR vs. Westfield they seem to butt heads a lot in both Football and lacrosse.

Going to St. Joe's-DePaul at Giant Stadium this afternoon.
A friend has a kid on St. Joe's.

BR v s Westfield. If Bridgewater wins I believe it will be the 1st state title since 1974 (watched with my childhood friend whose Dad is a big Pharma alum on NJ cable channel 52 from AC) when, ironically, Jeff Vanderbeek (I thought it his brother but a local freebie paper said it was Jeff), former owner of the Devils, starred at RB for Bridgewater East in the victory over Carteret at Convention Hall. Ironcally now Vanderbeek and "little" brother (played for UVA-my buddy played with him) now coach and have taken Somerville to the states.

Bridgewater had a great team Shield's (above) year (Fall 1979) with our future RU RB-and were in the Final 4 of Group 3 along with Somerville, Manasquan and another. East played Manasquan down in Manasquan in the semis-we were looking forward to playing Somerville in the State Championship Game in an attempt to revenge a loss in Season 20-0 (or so the yearb ook says-just met our QB a few years ago and he argued that score was wrong) on few stellar plays by eventual Penn State player Johnathan Williams, and two future West Virginia players in Tom Gray and ?Halloway (my 2nd string buddy smacked him for a fumble my senior year). The later played at WVU with Curlin Beck (from Ohio?) whom I coincidentally
met in my jobs club a few years back in Somerville-and whose son played for Bridgewater a 6-7 years ago.

From what I heard (declined invite to go) East scored the winning TD late in the game-supposedly there are pictures showing such-but the ref raked Bridgewater with a no call. Manasquan won and Somerville beat them to win the state title.

Fans took solace in the fact our Thanksgiving Rivalry game with crosstown Bridgewater West was that Thanksgiving Thursday and West s*cked at 0-9 or similar. East kicked Wests butt so muchb over the years it was a tradition. However, in a game akin to Trump-Clinton a STUNNED crowd was witness to an explicable 30-0 halftime West lead! Never knew what happened until years? later when someone told me that East (after the Manasquan loss) packed it in and went out and basically the whole team got trashed the night before. East came back in the 2nd half but lost 30-20. The turkey didn't taste as good that year. East and Bridgewater, I believe, has not won states since (1974).

St. John Bosco vs Mater Dei for the southern section division 1 championship. The trinity league out here is as good as the north jersey parochial league. Only issue is that public and private play for same championship and as you can see two privates are in.

Ohio and Penn. don't separate the Publics and Privates for State Playoffs as well. Last night in Ohio it was an all Parochial St Eds vs St Ignatius for the big schools. IMO, it's not an even playing field, and think NJ has a better format. In the NE part of Eastern Pa, Bethlehem Catholic recruits and tears apart most of the Publics, and are in the final again.

Agreed. HOWEVER, the same? realignment really cuts out what used to be some GREAT LOCAL rivalries. For instance, should they have moved on, a Bridgewater- Somerville matchup would have been as good a story as any as the coaches (two of)-former Devils owner Jeff Vanderbeek and his "little" brother were arguably two of/THE? best players to play for Bridgewater East. Bridgewater-Linden I could care less about.

Westfield 15 Bridgewater 13. Bridgewater had chances but insisted on running the ball up the middle for the whole game with little success. 3 turnovers hurt bridgewater including the winning? pick 6 by the Westfield DB who had 2 interceptions today. Ash should take a good look at the DB-he was hurt most of last year. Ash has already offered the one LB preferred walkon but if "Gagne" is that big black guy? they should offer him overall-looked great today.

Bridgewater couldn't get into FG range for Davidowicz at the end. Lost by 2 15-13.
