Now that we're within the game time window, there are signs of what to look for on offense, that will be tell-tale signs of what the 2019 season will look like.
Can you make a blanket statement off of 1 game.???......yeah, you can in Year 4 of a program.
In the Texas State gams, here are the stats, all of which should be eclipsed because RU had 4 turnovers (1 pick 6 accounted for Texas State's points).
If RU doesn't beat these totals vs UMass, there's a LOT to be drawn from it....we have a better QB, better Running game, will assuredly not have 4 turnovers and every game on the schedule will be harder than UMass. Here's what we should beat in every category, even though many can argue UMass is better than Texas State.
2018 Texas State
23 1st downs
9-15 3rd down conversions
20-30 passing for 205 yards
3 interceptions (should be no more than 2 vs UMass
46 rushes for 218 yards ( we should break 260 easily, our backs are more explosive, with more big plays minus Hilliman).
423 Total Yards
35+ minutes time of possession.
Final score was 35-7
If RU doesn't eclipse each and every offensive category vs last year's opener, it's going to be a very long and difficult season.
My expectations for significant improvement or progress that should happen.
28+ 1st downs
11-16 3rd down conversions
525+ Total Yards of offense
24-35 passing, 275 yards 3 TDs, 1 INT
44 rushes, 270 yards, 3 TDs, no turnovers.
36+ minutes Time of possession
I know the rushing yards seems high, but I believe Blackshear, Pacheco and Young have multiple 10 yard carries and we get 100 yards on the ground in the 4th quarter alone, as we wear down UMass.
45-17 final score.
RU may not hit every category and the flow of a football game can change with turnovers or unexpected plays on special teams. But play to play on both sides of the ball, RU is better.
Time to look for signs of progress on offense that can be compared to other B1G programs and what their likely stat lines would be, if they would host UMass as their opening game.
