It all depends on the date of the first game.

The NCAA allows a specific number of days or "units" for Summer Practice. They count back starting with the 1st game on the schedule. Two-a-days count as 2 units. I'm not sure how this fits into Ash's RU practice schedule but this years 1st game is 1 day later than last year. It may feel later because RU had some August kickoffs in the recent past iirc.

You can have a total of 12 live contact practices during the summer portion. Live contact is defined as tackling to the ground and full speed blocking. You can only have 4 live contact practices a week, so there really isn't much sense to start earlier then 3 weeks before the season starts. The season practice period starts 6 days before the first game. So you basically start 4 weeks before opening day.
