Football Where does the media think Rutgers Football will finish in the Big Ten?

That’s not really true in the way your putting it. It may be true that the QBs on better teams tend to have better statistical ratings in general, but the OL matters a ton too. A good OL can make many below average QB look decent and vice versa. It really depends on what the QB struggles with. If throwing while under pressure is a big issue - having better protection will make a big difference. When the issue is accuracy in general, like with Gavin, the extra time doesn’t matter that much. So it really depends.
you are going to confuse the Cuse fan...

lots of games that will mean a whole lot this season. But two very winnable games that would be massive for changing the perception around the program…

Beat Wisc and Neb this year and we’ll get a ton of respect. And also two programs that we always have seemingly found a way to lose ugly against.
these will be tough tough games that we need to find a way to win them.

Yeah probably.

It’s all about the line though as long the QB is servicable. Game managers can take teams with good blocking very far.

Akron will be a great litmus test for the OL and our new QB. No risk (I hope) of losing the game but it isn't the typical waste of time Wagner scrimmage either. The Zips D ranked 32nd last year in yards allowed and return most of the guys on that side of the ball. Id like to see what we look like moving the chains against them before predicting anything bold for the rest of the season.

Having the OL, a solid set of RB's and we need at least one WR to prove themselves as a game breaker. We get all 3 and the QB position will be set up to succeed. We don't need a QB to throw for 3000 yds and 20+ TD- we need mistake free

I love how the wisconsin edge is "home game"
I would have said, "No more Wimsatt to provide a 14 pt swing in the closing seconds of the 1st half". In a defensive battle it went from a potential 10-7 deficit at half to a 17-0 insurmountable lead. You don't need the best QB, just not the worst in all of FBS

Drew has surpassed his OC salary at Rutgers. Making $600K as the TE coach for the Ducks.

“Drew is one of the top young offensive minds in college football with an impressive history coaching multiple different positions,” Lanning said at the time of the hiring. “He was once the youngest play caller in the Power 5, and that experience will be very beneficial as we develop our offense. Our student-athletes are going to love working with Coach Mehringer and will learn a ton from him both as football players and as young men."

2024 Salary: $600,000

Mehringer joined Dan Lanning's inaugural coaching staff at Oregon in 2022 after building a reputation as one of the nation's top recruiters during stints at Texas (2017-19), FAU (2020) and New Mexico (2021). Mehringer moved quickly when he got to Eugene and landed four-star athlete Kenyon Sadiq in the class of 2023 and converted him to tight end. He also helped Terrance Ferguson set career-highs in receptions (42), receiving yards (414) and touchdowns (six). Ferguson came up one reception shy of Ed Dickson's single-season record and three touchdowns grabs shy of Justin Peelle's mark.

How does that make sense. One of the top recruiters? At Texas? He was fired in an unceremonious manner.

But the Longhorns had a bit of a deceiving recruiting haul at wide receiver for the 2019 cycle. The two top rated signees Mehringer brought in are no playing in the receiving corps for the Longhorns just nine months after National Signing Day 2019.

Former Texas transfer, and USC Trojans freshman wide receiver Bru McCoy, left the Forty Acres just as quick as he landed here. And fellow former five-star wide receiver recruit Jordan Whittington was moved to running back in spring camp by Herman.”

Went to FAU and was not retained. Not sure what he did at New Mexico. But can’t imagine there were many recruiting victories.

If those were his only two, pretty thin, but:

Whittingham was drafted by the Rams.

McCoy is a late bloomer?? From Bru McCoy's Wikipedia (now on the Tennessee Vols roster):

He graduated early from Mater Dei and enrolled at USC in January 2019. After 17 days, he opted to transfer to the University of Texas at Austin, as he felt betrayed by Kliff Kingsbury, the Trojans' offensive coordinator, leaving USC to be the head coach for the Arizona Cardinals of the National Football League.[4][9][10] He participated in spring practice with the Texas Longhorns, before he decided to leave Texas.[11] He transferred back to USC in June.[12] He missed several months of the 2019 season due to symptoms that were never diagnosed, and took a redshirt for the season.[13][14] McCoy made his college football debut for the Trojans in the 2020 season.[15] He caught 21 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns.[16]After a July 2021 arrest for alleged domestic violence, McCoy was suspended indefinitely from the football team. Citing privacy regulations, former USC coach Clay Helton was not forthcoming with more information with the media.[17] Despite all charges being dropped for a lack of evidence, USC did not reinstate McCoy.[18]

University of Tennessee

In May 2022, McCoy announced his transfer to the University of Tennessee to play for the Tennessee Volunteers football team.[18] On the 2022 season, McCoy recorded 52 receptions for 667 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns. He had three games going over the 100-yard mark in the Volunteers 11–2 season.[19][20]

In the 2023 season, McCoy recorded 17 receptions for 217 yards and one touchdown in five games.[21] He suffered a season-ending displaced fracture of his right ankle against South Carolina on September 30.

Yes to all of this - though again, I’d argue that RB and WR performance is also correlated with the OL. None of this is to say, it’s not important to have talent at all the skill positions, but one need only reflect on Pacheco’s numbers at Rutgers to fully appreciate the impact of a poor line. I know Kyle broke a ton of tackles and I don’t want to take anything away from him, but there’s a difference between having to break free from one guy and getting hammered from all ends because your OL has leaks everywhere. A huge difference.

Vedral was far from a stud QB, but he’s the perfect example of a guy who would’ve had much better looking numbers if surrounded by better blockers.

Yea he had some recruiting success. But many did not have success at Texas. He also was fired at Texas and the rumors were that Mehringer was “skirting” recruiting rules. And was at odds with Herman his mentor.

I'm not cheerleading for the guy or a fan. He was terrible here, but put in a bad position way too soon in his coaching career. He seemed like he had some sort of compelling story. Tom Herman has had quite the fall from the high perches of coaching. 4-8 at his first year at FAU. Not bad coin at Oregon--$600K for a TE coach.

Yea. Was put in an easy position to fail. Especially with an inexperienced dolt of a coach.

Was more amazed of the wording in his bio. He has had quite a career for someone his age.

Right … that’s true

Here's some more amazing wording from the bio of a former RU coach--it's all true (I think):

From 2012-15, Flood guided the Rutgers football program as part of 11 seasons on staff in Piscataway. He became the first head coach in school history to lead the program to three bowl appearances in his first three seasons at the helm and finished with a 27-24 overall record.

Flood’s first year as head coach at Rutgers was as memorable as any in Scarlet Knights football history. He guided Rutgers to its first Big East Championship, earned Big East Coach of the Year honors and won more games (nine) than any rookie head coach in school history.

He led Rutgers through their transition to the Big Ten conference in 2014, capped by a win in the 2014 Quick Lane Bowl. Flood guided Rutgers to eight wins that season – the program’s first year as a member of the Big Ten. The Scarlet Knights won all five of their non-conference games and earned Big Ten victories over Michigan, Indiana and Maryland. The Knights were also honored in 2014 with their first-ever Lambert-Meadowlands Trophy, which goes to the top team in the East in the Bowl Subdivision.

In 2015, Flood had six different players earn All-Big Ten accolades. Those included Leonte Carroo, who left as the program record holder with 29 receiving touchdowns. The 2013 season saw the Scarlet Knights earn a trip to the Pinstripe Bowl in New York’s Yankee Stadium.

During his tenure as the head coach at Rutgers, his teams mounted two of the largest comebacks in school history. In 2014 at Maryland and 2015 at Indiana, the Scarlet Knights erased 25-point deficits to earn victories.

Before becoming the head coach at Rutgers, Flood spent seven years (2005-11) on head coach Greg Schiano’s staff. He oversaw the offensive line all seven years while adding run game coordinator to his duties in 2007, assistant head coach in 2008 and co-offensive coordinator in 2010.

During his time at Rutgers, the offensive line consistently produced top-level talent, including several players who went on to the NFL. All-American Anthony Davis became the highest player ever drafted in Rutgers history as the 11th overall pick of the 2010 NFL Draft. Darnell Stapleton started in Super Bowl XLIII for the victorious Pittsburgh Steelers. Jeremy Zuttah started 117 games over nine seasons in the NFL after playing for Flood

Yeah, that's funny. I was working quickly. I agree with the other comments in this thread on how the pick six was the killer. We were basically right there with them last season at Camp Randall until that backbreaker. Get better QB play and this is a game I can see us being a slight favorite to win.

Reading some of the early stuff in this thread the UW game was interesting. I looked a tiny bit into their new head coach Jedd Fisch.

-He was an NFL QB coach.. so replacing Penix might be easier for him... or at least easier to recognize limitations of QB and coach around that.

-As HC at Arizona, he took over a 4-7 Zona team for Covid year and they took a step back with 0-5 and 1-11 seasons as he rebuilt.. but they climbed to 5-7 and then 10-3 last year in a strong PAC.. and beat Oklahoma in their bowl game.

UW has a lot to rebuild or reload. They are starting from a very high position.. so a step back is still pretty high. I don't think Fisch can reset expectations low enough to tolerate a full rebuild where a losing season would be chalked up to rebuilding nor does anyone know what Fisch can do inheriting a very good team. UW hired a good coach before him so maybe they know what they are doing.

If we beat UW... it will be a great achievement and a milestone for this year's team and the program as a whole.
