Seems like Chol to me....he was so lost defensively in his limited minutes, that a 1 year with Pikiell under his belt gives him a shot at being average defensively. Which would be a huge improvement.

Just based on last year, Chol has the biggest opportunity to make a jump. He basically didn't play last year. Simpson and Hyatt played plenty last year but a good Chol would really shake up the rotation (in a good way).

Excellent topic!
Based on Pike's comments and the games in Portugal and what I hope happens, I picked Hyatt. If he is a legit fairly efficient scoring threat from 3 and going to the hoop AND can also create for others, we'll be really good.

If I could get a 2nd choice, it would be Chol. He's the highest-upside guy out of the rest, other than Cliff who is a known commodity at this point.
Unless Hyatt has changed his shooting mechanics, I have trouble seeing him making a big jump. If he is still shooting that hard line drive at the basket, he will have too many games where he is a little off, and the basketball will be ricocheting 10-15 off the rim. I will reserve judgement until I have the opportunity to see him play again.

Consistency from Hyatt would be huge. He’s shown he can go off at times from deep (5-11 vs NEB, 4-7 vs Iowa), but there are also to many 0 for whatever games in his game log.

Not sure I’d describe Hyatt’s shot trajectory as a hard line drive.

I picked Wolf. The combination of getting in basketball shape and practicing all off-season should get his fouls down and allow him to play better defense, which was his biggest issue. He showed some interesting flashes last year, if he builds on that will be an important part of the team going forward.

This was a topic every game last year. His shot trajectory made it so hard to be accurate. Hyatt has very good accuracy but way too flat of an arc to make a lot of shots. If he fixes that, which I assume he has worked on given his improvements, Hyatt can have a huge year.

In person, at court level, Hyatt was shooting a complete line drive when he was slumping. It's a sign of a player aiming a shot instead of shooting it. If he gets back to more arc, he can potentially fulfill his potential as a recruit

Simpson was my choice though. He will certainly he getting more minutes, and his shooting percentages were reallyyyy bad. Some might have forgotten just how bad. 37% FG 21% from 3. It's very likely he takes a giant leap forward statistically from those gross numbers

Chol is I guess a lock if you go by percentage increase over last year since be redshirted. There's still a chance he struggles to find minutes behind Hyatt, Mag, possibly Wolf and even Oskar. Hoping for and likely a breakout year, but there are more obstacles to playing time than Simpson who has a locked in role. I feel a little weird not picking Chol as the original Chol truther, but Simpson's shooting numbers were just so poor last season his increase is essentially guaranteed

From what Pike has said it's not just his shot, he putting the ball on the floor confidently and leading the team in assists on a regular basis in scrimmage sections in practice.
If that's all true and we can have Hyatt and Gavin out there together and 3-4 and sometimes 2-3, it's going to be fun to watch.
His handle in mid court area or when has space reminds me of Celts Jaylen Brown, it's just not smooth

Scangg....are you going on record with Chol this year?
Chol bandwagon much more crowded then the empty mag bandwagon we were on at this time last year
Chol is the biggest wildcard. I've always been high on his upside from the first time we heard about him being recruited.

He joined the team very late, but he was really horrific defensively in the few minutes we saw. I give him a pass on it, and I do think with the added size and time to familiarize himself with Pike's system that he should be at least playable on defense. He really has the size athleticism and length to be a very good and versatile defender. We just don't know at this point

Shooting is his strength. If he can knock down shots, he will play. The early season performance will be bigger for Chol than anyone else on the roster IMO. With Mag a question to start the season, potentially not playing at all or limited minutes, Chol will get his chance. If he delivers, I see him being a solid part of the rotation for the rest of the season.

If Chol struggles early, where does that leave him for the rest of the season once Mag is fully back?

Pike can always turn to a reliable experienced Oskar as we saw when Hyatt struggled last season. Pike has a lot of options at the 4 (he has said Wolf will play some there TBD if it happens) and with different lineup combinations for all positions really. This team is also much deeper.

How many players are not going to be happy when they aren't in the rotation as we get to the B1G schedule? (barring injuries of course)

Noah Simpson Davis Griffiths Williams

Hyatt Mag Chol Oskar

Cliff Wolf Ogbole

If you say Oskar and Ogbole are 11 and 12 in the rotation, is Pike playing 10 guys in B1G? If not, who are 9 and 10? Chol could be stuck in that type of role which wouldn't mean a lot of minutes unless we have injuries

I do believe Chol CAN break out. I'm not 100% sure it WILL happen like I was with Mag last year. We just haven't seen Chol on the court at all. With Mag you could see the potential oozing from the previous year. Well some of us could at least

Picked Cliff. maybe more wish than prediction. Would love for him to become dominant.
Cliff should thrive in a more up tempo system. It will take advantage of his speed and athleticism compared to other bigs. He's not a back to the basket skilled offensive low post threat. Running up the court and getting him dunks and put backs in transition better fits his game

I see the biggest challenge for Chol being positional.
I haven't really seen him play, but he seems like a 4, skills and body type
Hyatt, Mag and Oskar were all primarily 4's last year and Pike seems to want to get Wolf minutes there too.
Minutes at that spot will be hard to come by.
Exactly although it sounds like Hyatt and Mag might play at the 3 which would open things up, but that would mean less minutes for a guard or two with Noah Griffiths Simpson Davis and Williams

Pike has a lot of options but can't give minutes to everyone

I agree - Cliff runs and moves so well - that's his advantage, not the low post game
Great test for Cliff right off the bat on Saturday vs Soriano
Can't read too much into the game but we will see how Cliff is used - hoping not as much low post as last season and lots more running and movement and lob catching
Also even in the half court the rolls to the rim should be more open. When Paul ran it teams just dropped off with Cliff daring Paul to shoot. Paul was just sooo unwilling to pull the trigger that it killed the effectiveness of it

If teams want to sag off with Cliff as he rolls and Noah or Griffiths is running it, they are going to get killed by the 3 ball

Simpson and Davis running it and it's also a completely different look with their speed and ability to attack the rim

Loveeee the versatility and options we have this season for Cliff and ball screens

I wonder how much real scrimmage they will play, or if they will play more situational drills. If I am Pike I would be a little wary of playing an outright scrimmage. Pitino has been talking up Pike and the team and could be setting us up. Pitino doesn’t really have anything to lose if it doesn’t go well, but he has a lot of talent on his team (I honestly don’t know how he is going to manage his rotation, he has like 13 guys who could all start), and Pitino will have the NY media in his back pocket crowing about it if they play well. Maybe Pike doesn’t care, maybe he thinks we will do well and is not worried about it, or maybe he didn’t agree to a real scrimmage and they will mostly run situational drills.
