Who Starts Next Year?

I'm curious as to who you all think starts next year?

My guess is Rettig. First off, he's the best QB on the roster. 2nd he ran a spread offense while in high school. While he isn't mobile he is comfortable in the shotgun with a quick release. Lastly, Tom Hermann taking Kyle Allen shows me his offense is adjustable; he will get the best players and adjust his offense to them.

I don't think Laviano is a P5 QB, IMO. While he is more mobile than Rettig he isn't what you'd call mobile. So, if Ash wants a truly mobile QB he would turn to Gio who sat two years and is actually mobile.

I don't see Odin being ready yet, he needs to gain much more size.

Thoughts?

Hard to know, but if I had to guess, I'd guess that Laviano will start. But he'll have a short leash. If Laviano starts, I'm not sure who the backup would be.

I'm just not buying the Rettig hype. Ran the spread in high school but threw 18 picks his senior year. He left LSU supposedly because he couldn't run their offense and would fit better under the Flood offense.
I wasn't as blown away by some here by the 100 yards he lit up Norfolk State for. I think he has arm strength but lacks accuracy and touch.

So the Laviano bashing couldn't wait until at least the start of spring practice?

When Russo decommitted everyone said "he doesn't fit the system, good riddance" and now we want Rettig, who is very similar in the spread, to start? Hell no, Laviano or Dare

Right now the only person I know for sure that will be there on Opening day is Chris Ash. And, some people will even speculate on that!

How DARE he? [roll]
Rescigno?
It's a real toss up at this point. We really haven't seen how mobile the other QBs are, because we have only seen one QB in meaningful action. We saw a microflash of Rettig against Norfolk but that is not enough of a sample. I'm sure Mehringer will have it figured out. Maybe we'll see some wildcat action with one of the RBs (Hicks?) or Grant.

Laviano could easily benefit from an offense that puts pressure on safeties and linebackers to make split second run/pass reads.
He also won't have to deal with 8 men in the box constantly, which makes your quick release and timing throws much easoer

IIRC Geo is extremely mobile.

Trick question OP - your question is who starts next season. I think Laviano starts the first game, but will be replaced by mid season.

What I'm hoping is that we have schemes that allow the WR's to get open, something that, outside of Carroo, didn't happen all that much last season.

Still blows my mind that people say Rettig is the best QB on the roster. Hype means nothing.

I don't care who the OP is, who he works for or what his motivation is. He raised a perfectly valid discussion point for a CFB message board. I don't see his post as trolling, even if it's yet another example of discussing things that have been discussed ad nauseam. Lots of people raise topics that have been already discussed.

Would seem that a "let's see how it plays out " approach may be best -
would not be excited about last year's CL - but this staff is going to be employing a different offense, and has different coaches - who may have better insight & may know how to refine / reconstruct the techniques of the QBs - so, my hunch is that if CL is the starter, it will likely be as a result of some serious modifications that resolved various issues .... not just that he gets it by default.
Figure that Ash's preference would be for one of the existing QBs to somehow be able to competently & fluidly & competitively take the controls for next year and allow Oden to pack on some lbs & have a truly beneficial red-shirt year .....

It's just the guy's opinion; far from "bashing."
He is entitled to his opinion. He is not entitled to say horrible things about Laviano 7000 times over a 3 month period. So far, I have only seen this one post from him so I agree it's just an opinion.

100% spot-on. It's simply amazed me that we can be critical of coaches and players of ANY team, other than football, on these boards. People need to start realizing the difference between constructive criticism and discussions, and "bashing," or maybe they just shouldn't bother reading threads as such. Pre-Flood there were very few problems having any such discussions. Some posters need to grow a set around here and man-up.

Absolutely nothing wrong with his comments in THIS thread, however, bottom line.

I'm more worried about who's starting on D, linebacker to be specific.
Bingo. We need a D that can keep us in games and allow us to run a balanced Offense. Over the last 3 seasons when the games were close our QB's typically performed well and we had run / pass balance. When we get down early and cannot run the ball our QB play has been much worse. With the Power spread we may have the ability to hit on big plays and score more points but I suspect Ash is thinking along the same lines as you are.

Our first priority is to shore up the D, run the ball and give our QB's a chance. As for who starts, the edge has to go to Laviano but I think Rettig gets his fair shot this Spring and next Summer like everyone else. I hope our fans can be reasonable about this. Most are and just do not come on this board. It's the vocal minority that causes all of the controversy.

I'll go with whoever can make quick, accurate reads of the defense. Doesn't HAVE to be a runner, but can't hurt.

After that, just change what isn't working, and I'll be fine.

I'm not sure If you're just this way or you flat didn't read my OP. I said, " My guess is Rettig". Never once said i'd be upset or would be pissed if he wasn't. Merely trying to make a simple discussion as to who everything thought would start and why. However, you had to turn it into some ordeal that all I do is bash Laviano and who cares who starts next year nonsense.

Someone is probably going to transfer after spring practice. Maybe even two

I wouldn't be shocked in any way whatsoever if Dare left. IMHO he wasn't likely to ever start a game at this level, and isn't fit for this O, however would have been a capable backup by RJR year in a pro-style. Probably go to a Monmouth or somewhere and hopefully start for a couple of seasons.

Deonte Roberts
Tj Taylor
Isaiah Johnson

We're going to be thin but better at LB. Need the second group of guys - brandon russell, trevor morris, margolis - to step up big time.
Hopefully after 2016 we see Sidney Gopre finally get to the Banks.

I think you quoted the wrong post. I have no problem with your comments and the quote you are replying to was about our Defense.

My wording on my first post was not great. I meant your post is fine but others have repeatedly bashed Laviano and all of our QBs really which is not acceptable IMO. Opinions are great. Repeated bashing of any player or coach is BS.

This board has become a youth league. Everyone gets a participation award and no one can talk about a player's shortcomings.

When people discuss a player's weaknesses others call it bashing. Those that think any criticism isn't allowed on here should just avoid the board or not engage people that you deem in your narrow mind as negative.

These are college football players. Any discussion of both good and bad is part of the territory and they understand that. People on here should understand that as well.
