Why don't the home sideline sections (125, 126, 127) start the RU chant?

Because today's attempts for the RU chant were pretty sad.

The intent was good...execution not so much

If there are any student leaders out there: slow the f*ck down!! You guys get it going so quickly that by the 3rd chant both sides are chanting at the same time. Give the rest of the stadium a chance to let the "UUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!" boom through the stadium. It's pretty impactful when that happens the right way.

This has been a problem for about 5 years now. No idea why this is happening

Because with all the piped in music no one has a chance to start a chant that can last more than 10 seconds. But I agree today's effort was pretty poor. As the previous poster said it is not a race. Lengthen the R wait a second allow for the elongated U to build wait a second respond. Not terribly difficult only 2 letters. Hahahaha

Even the closed captioning on the video board had "UR! UR! UR!" during one of the promos.

Come on!

Speaking as a member of the Riot Squad, it's tricky when not everyone is in that same group...nearly everyone in Riot Squad is part of the student section, but not everyone in the student section is part of Riot Squad. I also didn't hear much from everyone else in the stadium. If you yell R, we can respond with U.

I'll talk with the rest of the E-board about ways we can get this fixed though. I've been coming to the games for long enough to know how it should sound. Drop some ideas in this thread on getting it fixed, and we'll talk it over.

Pretty simple get the damn cheerleaders some R and U cards and have them hold them up like every single other college cheerleading group does in the country. I still can't understand why zoffenger doesn't have them do this. What are they to good to do what every other college does.

If you get this one simple act accomplished you will have resurrected the RU chant and will be forever immortalized on this board as the one to do so. Now go young man go.

They do hold up R cards. Not every RU chant is led by the cheerleaders though, and I'm in no position as part of the Riot Squad to tell them how to run their stuff.

Riot Squad, as of this semester, is a student org, not athletics. And even last year, as part of athletics, we had no influence on that kind of thing, to my knowledge.

I will, however, pass that along to our marketing chair, and he can pass it to athletics if he so chooses.

You guys have to use the jumbotron with this. Have someone make an animation that guides the chant or just use cheerleaders.

Then get a group of guys and go to opposite sides of the stadium with cards. The cheerleaders stand just in front of the students. Have three guys on visiting side and three on home. You will be amazed at the response. Don't start it with the students the old folks now how it supposed to be done.

Unfortunately, Riot Squad does not control the Jumbotron, but this is something I think we could possibly do...perhaps a hype type video as they did with the "good sportsmanship" video. Another problem is that the student section faces away from the Jumbotron. Perhaps we can have a big block R show up on the opposite side screen, and a big U on the jumbotron?

The music is also a minor problem...when RU chants are quieter than the music, it makes it harder to keep them going correctly.

You have to do opposite sides of the stadium first then the whole stadium will join in. This crucial you can't have it start in just one section need the sound to carry.

That could be tricky to coordinate, but it's a valid suggestion. I'll bring it up. Keep em coming.

I'm thinking it may be key to split the cheer down the middle, endzone to endzone. Otherwise the noise is uneven, and it travels unevenly. Like, home sideline R, away sideline U.

It's easy have one lead man on each side everyone else looks to the lead guy on their side to hold up cards. Use cell phones to coordinate side to side until chant is full go. You'll get it may take a little practice but by games end you'll have it down pat.

Yes, I would go home and away sidelines more people in these sections. You only have to get maybe three sections in the middle of each sideline to start it then others will chime in.

The actual cards is only one part of it. We're not allowed to go on the field without some sort of permission, so that part may take coordination, plus we're not a part of gameday staff so we have no idea what their script for music and PA announcements is. This would have to be an Athletics thing that they ask for our help with, not the other way around. We can suggest it though.

I think you guys should have one half of the student section call to the other side. Say the right side of the student section calls to the left side of the student section. This will allow the left sideline to respond in sync with the left side of the student section and vice versa. This way you can control the speed of the RU easier.

You don't have to go down on the field. Stand on the walkway on the lower level between the first field level rows and the middle rows

Mm. Could see about getting members in the aisle between the two sides, facing both directions.

Yes that's all you need to do. You just need a couple sections on each side to get it started. Then once that slow RRRRRRR UUUUUUU is started the stadium will take over.

My god. It seems there's all sorts of beurocracy here just for a damn chant. We can't do anything right. EVERYONE NEEDS TO WORK TOGETHER. If the Riot Squad isn't allowed to talk to "athletics," then we suck.

I was thinking about wearing a redfireman hat and getting up on my buddies shoulders and becoming "Fireman Red" ill quiet the stadium down then give a long RRRRRRRRRR wait for a longer UUUUUUUUUUU pause and then repeat

We are allowed to talk to athletics. We are not allowed to be sponsored by athletics. Student groups can't be sponsored by a Rutgers department.

I completely agree on the bureaucracy thing though.

If the student section insists on starting RU chants, the student section must ONLY say, "R!" Again, the student section is ONLY allowed to say, "R!" Most RU chants occur right after The Bells Must Ring (after a score). Sir ScarletKnight, get that out there on a Reddit or something. The RU chant goes to $hit when you guys chant among yourselves (student section).

If the Maryland student sections at their hoops games can do what they do, our student section should be able to handle a simple mandate of only saying "R!" while the rest of the stadium joins in AFTER with a "U!"

The students should not do the "R" as they always respond too quickly
It quickly becomes the UUU RRR chant and then gets to be a total mess
(I sit at midfield) It is really sad that a two letter chant can't be done well.
I also agree that there is way too much piped in noise

I cant understand the fascination with the R U chant. It was a horrible game based on opponent.
Worry about that on good games.

I remember at the first home game in either 07, 08, or 09, there was an attempt to fix the chant. Someone scattered a ton of little pieces of paper all over the student section that said "Let's fix the RU chant" and urged everyone to pause between the U and the R. When I saw this I was hopeful that finally it was being addressed, but as more students started filling in, people were reading the paper and just scoffed at it because they either didn't like being told what to do or didn't like being told that they were doing something wrong.

Maybe another attempt at this would be helpful if we had people handing out index cards at the top of the student section where the ushers check tickets, but instead of just telling people what to do, also explain why it sounds better or something. However, I think we've reached a point though where even the seniors in the student section have only ever heard it be done wrong, so I'm not too optimistic.

It needs to be end zone to endzone. And sideline to sideline.

Then the RRRRRRRRRR gets to travel across the stadium. And then the UUUUUUUUUUUUU gets to travel across the stadium and it naturally slows down.

My idea would be to get a couple riot squad members and the cheerleaders to start RRRRRRRRRR
In the north endzone
and have the students respond UUUUUUUUUU

Then the cheerleaders lead the home sideline with
RRRRRRRRRRRRR
and the visitor sideline with
UUUUUUUUUUUUU

Then repeat
north endzone RRRRRRRRRR
Students UUUUUUUUUUUUU
Home side RRRRRRRRRR
Away side UUUUUUUUUU

One thing that is done at a lot of SEC schools (and in supporter sections at Soccer games) is to have one or a couple of students in the front row with a gap row after that so there's a separation in the student section to distinguish them. They then stand facing the students to show them what cheer is next. In addition, the leader has a microphone with speakers facing the student section so they can hear them and not disrupt play

The only thing you can do, is try to get the students to do ONLY the R. No U. When doing this, you also have to recognize that the rest of the stadium is going to take a few Rs to realize whats going on. So mostly at first its just going to be RRRRRRRRRRRRRR.....RRRRRRRRRRRRRRR....RRRRRRRRRRRR...UUU....RRRRRRRRRRRRRR...UUUUUU...RRRRRRRRRRRRR...UUUUUUUUUU

This is why having the cheerleaders lead the cheer is so vital and I cant understand why its not being done.

Worry about that on good games.
The time to worry about it is before you get to the big name opponents. You want it to sound awesome for PSU, not to sound like you are trying to work out how to get it right.

We need to practice it before kickoff. The students will be in their seats early for the big games. Have someone over the PA system explain how it should work. Then practice it a few times before kickoff.

Athletics has spoken.

Clearly the students don't read this. #'s 1 and 3 aren't happening.:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

This just came out, we'll do our best. Follow @RURiotSquad on twitter, and retweet us when we post it. Share it on Facebook. Help us get the word out! If you know students going, make sure they see it.
