Why not play more zone against quick opponents

I thought we should have tried more zone against Bama as their quickness were matchup issues for us. It would also allow Ogbole to stay inside instead of covering high post

Thoughts?

Keeping Ogbole in the lane would be the only benefit. Quick guards can get through openings in a zone and shooters have a much easier time finding space against a zone if the zone isn't played extremely well.

Agree to a certain extent. But I think our length gives us a chance to play better zone defense and clog up passing lanes

You need extremely quick feet to run an effective zone. I think unless we completely committed to coach zone, we will only see it as a small change look. Could we run a 1 3 1 zone w Ogbole anchored, maybe Ace's length in the center? JWill could handle a wing.

I agree with especially if we want to see more of Hayes and Martini. We need their three point shooting.

If we ran a sunk 3-2. It would shave off -- atleast 10 points a game. We have slow feet, but good size and long arms. A sunk 3-2 - would lure guards into shooting off the dribble more. Which is tough for alot of college guards. Be alert for the screens, and close out. Our defense and rebounding improve. For this team specifically. We could see more Martini and Hayes, also

Not sure how to like more than once. Been saying this since first game of year watching this team struggle to contain/guard against 3pt

Bama is known for their three point shooting. As a shooter you literally drool when a team goes zone. Plus we’ve hardly played any zone this year. It probably wouldn’t even be a good zone. Rutgers is also bad at rebounding and It’s really really hard to rebound out of zone

1. Could rebounding be any worse?
2. Just curious, why does it make rebounding more difficult? My thinking is centers could camp out under basket and not chase the guy their defending

Its about finding a man to box out and if you dont have good fundamentals with that you can get lost quickly and opposing teams have an advantage there

1. If we played zone defense then yes it certainly could be.
2. Several reasons but the biggest one is probably because boxing out becomes more difficult since you won’t necessarily have a clear matchup who you’re supposed to put a body on.

Yeah it could get worse but basically what everyone else said it’s just really hard to track a man to box out. And most missed shots would probably be 3s, so you get those weird long rebounds too

I agree to play more zone, but not switch to it
We were doing some against Alabama when JWill came out
Could also rest our offensive stars a little better
Playing against zone is not always a better situation for 3 point shooters. An over pursuing man to man against a good whip it around passing offense, creates completely open looks a lot. Zone would at least have a defender in place.
Rebounding is so hard to predict. Still grumbling over the missed opportunity in the final minute after Alabama missed second shot..

And you have been wrong every time.
Been wrong about what? Clearly we don't defend well and have people out of place all over the floor. We also don't rebound so if you continue to play m2m without any changes then don't expect any differences.

Same thing can be said about our press which exhausts players so playing back to a zone with certain lineups in can save energy.

Clearly you think you know how to coach

As Geo said, a zone makes it harder to rebound and defend the three pointer.

So a team cannot improve over the course of a season?

That is common knowledge by anyone who has played or coached the sport. Man to man is easier to close out on players and only way to get open looks is by setting screens and cuts off the ballS. Thing is our ability to defend man to man by certain players is just not there so in many cases you throw in a zone to switch it up and cover areas. Makes it harder to plan when you at least seti h uo what you are doing tk throw off the other team. Go back and watch the Alabama game again and see how Oats was running same plays.

As for rebounding it’s the same story. As I said above it’s much harder to rebound in a zone to find an open man to box out and grab a rebound.
Again difference for us…we don’t see to do that in man to man either so again maybe by switching it up on defense to put people like Ace in certain areas on the floor to force him to at least jump for a ball in position.
Only players who aggressively go to rebound are Jwill, Jordan, Hayes, and Acuff. Wrong height and size we need to help but rather see more players crash the boards than none.
Additionally we are way off in our help side defense and constantly see players getting eat off the dribble. If we were co ring certain areas on the floor we can defense.

This is NOT a 2-3 am zone look all game that you would see from Cuse rather alternatives to slow the other team down coming out of our press.
