Very few posters "publicly blasted" Russo before or after his commitment.
In fact, the consensus was that as a Pro Set QB he was well ahead of Guarantano as a fit, and only a little behind Haskins ... the other 2 QB RU was pursuing.
Also, VERY few, if any, posters were actually wanting Russo to decommit after Ash was hired. The vast majority wanted him to stay committed.
Many DID speculate he might well decommit, however ... not the same as WANTING him to decommit. Russo had been very upfront during his initial recruitment that he was looking for a Pro Set offense (though how Temple fits into that I have no idea), and it became clear very fast that Ash would not run a Pro Set offense, and nor does the new OC run a Pro Set offense.
Almost no one on this Board would not like Russo to stick ... but he was wavering after Flood was fired, and just had a conversation with one of Ash's new assistants, so he must not have heard what he wanted to hear about the direction of the offense.
Our begging on a message board for a commit to stay committed means nothing. We have no idea what the new head coach's plan is for QB, or what the dialogue with Russo entailed. This looks like a bummer now, but it could work out better for both Russo and RU at some point. And maybe Russo ends up back in the fold - we do not know.
Mainly, most posters felt Russo would feel there was not a great fit more than RU could not find a fit for HIM. And, as I said earlier in this post, we have no idea what was said between Russo and the new RU assistant coach. Maybe RU wanted to keep him, but Russo has decided it is not the fit he wants. Maybe it was mutual, because the RU staff has other ideas about QB's. WE DO NOT KNOW.
A new head coach, however, should get the benefit of the doubt, at least for a time, from the fans, that the direction he is going is the best one for the program, and no ONE recruit is more important than the new direction the program is heading (and hopefully a more winning direction).
