Winning with No-name vs Big-name???

First I use the term "No-name" not as a label of disrespect, but instead as a point of contrast between the "Big-name" recruits and the not so sexy named athletes. This has to be one of the most interesting recruiting periods I can remember for RU football since I played back in the early 90s. As many on the board my hopes of RU finally moving to the next level in big-time college football seems at times like we are the brink of making a breakthrough, only to be let down with those elite players choosing to go elsewhere.

Now to my reasoning for this post's topic. I was thinking about the disappointment of many fans on the board with JG's decision. Then being encouraged with the buzz regarding all of the top tier recruits attending the Spring Game, we were all brought back to reality not having one of those named recruits stepping up to make a verbal commitment to open the Flood-Gates (Pun intended). That left me with a question I wanted to put out to the community. How many people would rather win with the 1 & 2 star type of players we developed, who choose RU because of their passion for the school (i.e. Jonathan Pollock) versus the Big-name kids that are on our wish list who have the perspective "it's all about me"?

Interested in everyone's perspective. Thanks in advance!

While it would be nice and show yes Flood can recruit... it is still really early... this being said these recruits just don't get it or we just aren't greasing enough palms...Or maybe it is that old perceptions die hard...Come on Kyle sell the vision of Rutgers as a new National player.

When did Pollock become a 1-2 star recruit?

When did Pollock become a 1-2 star recruit?

Lakers20 if it came across as I was saying Pollock was a 1 or 2 star prospect that was not my intention. I mentioned Pollock more in the context of his passion for RU and wanting to be here.

Please point out where Flood has successfully recruited.

In my opinion..ultimately recruiting is judged by on field results. So if RU continues to improve and exceeds expectation in the B1G, i don't care what the star ranking or class ranking was. It's very difficult projecting a HS player to Div 1. Most schools in Div 1 (RU included) aren't going to be able to sign a large number of "national" type recruits...normally they end up with the usual suspects (OSU, FSU, USC,etc). After those top 200 or so , the recruiting rankings get very dicey. Do really think the "experts" are going to be on point about who has the 30th, 45th or 60th best class? On field performance is the final judgement on recruiting.

Except there is no reason to expect that. Last years performance was more or less on par with what one would expect from the recruits we have. They year before was much worse, the year before that was again on par, or even a little low.

The experts are pretty solid actually, taken at the class level, espeically averaged out over four years. Its pretty predictive of team success, with most teams being within +- 20 of their average recruiting.

Sure, it would be great if we overshot our rankings, but I wouldnt count on it, based on Flood's results so far.

The level of utter B.S on display here is simply spectacular

Where in my post did I claim Flood could recruit?...Suggest you brush up on your 3rd grade comprehension skills.

The problem with the OP is that he is creating a scenario with two types of players. The lesser known prospect who bleeds school colors, or the heralded high star prospect who is selfish. The reality is that there is a whole range of players in between.

Similarly, there is an assumption that the so called big time programs only recruit the latter. The reality is that they get a wide range of players including highly rated prospects who either bleed the colors or while not a fan as a child, they are all about team over the individual.

A great model for Rutgers is what Dantonio has done at MSU. Be competitive with players you develop. Then bring in a class that includes a few higher rated guys, often local talent. Win some big games, and start recruiting more highly rated prospects.

MSU is now in the mix and successfully bringing in elite talent, but it started by winning with what he had.

Care to actually point out what part was BS. Because one of us actually has facts, and the other doesn't. I'll give you two guesses on who that one is.

As for MSU - DAntonio got it done at Cincnnati to get that job. Flood - well lets just say there is a reason he still makes so little money - because there is no competition for his services after the first three years.

Dantonio did have some level of success at Cinci with an 18-17 overall record, but he inherited a nightmare with the Spartans. At least a nightmare in terms of team attitude. The path to Rutgers success is still closer to the MSU or than the OSU, Michigan, or Penn State model. It's even different from the Wisconsin and Nebraska models as those programs don't have the talen within the geographic vicinity.

Give Flood a break. If he gets a 4-star to commit he will become a 3-star at signing time. We get no respect even if we get people in the NFL.
