Women's Lacrosse vs . Monmouth

This is another program which Julie Hermann neglected. Despite her supposed mandate to improve the other so called sports at Rutgers she fails to make a change in coaches for a team that went 2-15 and is headed in that direction again. We I believe had only one winning conference season in the Big East out of the last ten or so and we have now stepped up the competition being in arguably the best womens lacrosse conferences in the country. Hobbs has to make a change here and hopefully will after the season is over

Another program in complete disarray. Hopefully Hobbs is paying attention.

Complete disarray? Really, by what standards? They had one losing season last year after a couple of ok seasons and now they are in complete disarray. Are the girls on the team beating up drug dealers, sexually assaulting folks or is the coach pressuring profs for redos?
Or maybe you feel in complete disarray?

Listen, I HATE losing to Monmouth - even think we should put a clause in all contracts that says something like "if you lose to Monmouth more than once you're fired - but this comment leaves me with my head shaking. No, it's not a great program - not by any stretch of the imagination - but in "complete disarray"?? They did go 9-9 just 2 seasons ago and will have new facilities, to recruit with, in the next couple of years.

Nobody said this was going to be easy, moving to the B1G, but the bottom line is our athletic program, for a long, long time now, has arguably been the WORST of any current P5 schools and most FBS/D1 schools.

The Question you have to ask yourself is simple. What is the purpose of Rutgers Athletics? In my mind, it should be to give access to Elite Coaches to Kids that want it. You want to get caught up in records, and well that's why the programs are in disarray. Hire Elite Coaches and the kids will come. Anything else is an act of idiocy.

What a novel idea: elite student-athletes will follow elite coaches....

....GEE, SHOCKER!!!! Now:

- do we have the $$$ to do this for our programs? Nope. Not right now.

- do you have the $$$, or the time, to help a particular program develop into a national contender, as many have done with wrestling, over the course of a decade? I doubt it.

- do you realize that there are only so many "elite" coaches in any given sport and that this school has one of the worst athletic histories in the nation, hence, it's damn near impossible to get elite coaches as such here (CVS is the ONLY one I can think of, off the top of my head, who didn't "build" but was "elite" prior to coming to The Banks...) to begin with?

Ahhh, Yes. The Nitty Gritty. Fools chase Money, Smart People chase Opportunities. For Example, why not bring in David Stern in some form or capacity. Make him head of the Business School. Ash was a Great Hire.

I bet that formula would apply well to all sports. Long Time Assistants from Elite Programs. Use that model across the board. Problem Solved. Worked in Women's Golf. Let's apply this strategy to Field Hockey and Women's Lacrosse.

Kids want access to Elite Coaching. That my friend should be the Goal.

You obviously have no familiarity with our (current) financial issues so I'm going to pull myself out of this conversation. Thanks.

As long as Rutgers has a varsity women's volleyball program, it will own the word "disarray". It is by far the most over-matched program in the B1G. B1G teams, other than Maryland, have never played in front of, ahem, such pitiful crowds like at the Barn. Really have to wonder if Hobbs will even bother to fix it for a few years. No excuse for women's lax to be so mediocre. Vball is a different story.

you don't have to hire an elite coach you have to hire the right coach and this coach was another example of one being hired without the proper coaching background which was typical back in the day but now a change is needed. We got smoked 14-2 by the #15 team in the country. Again this is another sport where NJ has some of the best talent in the country. You need to make a hire of a top assistant at one of the top programs ala the Urban Meyer coaching tree and we certainly should have the money to do that or this program will be mired in the depths like it has been headed the last few years

So let me get this straight. You demand every ounce of excellence both on the field and off the field from the Student Athlete. Yet, you offer them a Non-Elite Coaching Staff. So much for an Institutional approach to Excellence.

It takes funding for a real coach and support. USC started a women's team 5 years ago. They hired a great coach. They also support the program. Now they are beating top 10 teams and have blown by Rutgers like we were standing still, because likely, we are, at every level of the program.

The Cost of not hiring an Elite Coach is far higher than the cost of actually hiring an Elite Coach.

I agree. But what do you think helps make coaches elite? It's program support. You need both.

When you hire the right people, i.e. Step 1; Step 2, Get Out of the Way is actually pretty easy, lol. Call me a Pollyanna, but I believe that people want to be great. They want to succeed.

A sport like lacrosse simply doesn't have enough opportunities for former players, especially those that aspire to greatness in coaching. For Women's lacrosse a Coach like Amanda Barnes or Jenn Cook. Both would be immediate upgrades.

Elite coaches don't go places without major support. It's what helps makes them elite.

Not true. Elite Coaches seek Opportunity. You probably confuse tough talk with coaching ability. There's a huge difference.

Florida just started a Women's lacrosse Team 6 years ago. They've made the NCAA 5 times. USC just started a program two years ago, and they're already better than Rutgers. Take a look at their roster, check out how many Jersey girls are on it.

No shit. I gave SC as an example of the obvious. Guess who has crazy support for their programs? Florida and USC. Trust me. I know exactly what they are doing for support. Rutgers doesn't even have the full allotment of out of state scholarship money. They use in state rates.

Guess who doesn't do that? Elite coaches don't seek opportunity. Opportunity seeks them. They choose where to go, and no elite coach will go somewhere without support and I challenge you to give an example where that didn't happen.

Just wondering why Rutgers charges $10 admission for their women's lacrosse games? They are the only big10 school that charges any fee for that sport. We attended the Johns Hopkins game and the Hopkins fans outnumbered the home team fans at least 10 to 1. There were several hundred wearing the Hopkins blue! If Rutgers wants to see how to host a lax game they should take a ride to Baltimore and take in a Hopkins or Maryland game. Oh yes, it's free!!!

Not to make this personal, but the Women's Lacrosse Coach at Rutgers knows very little about winning. To her credit, she's an Alum, but she has zero clue about how to run an Elite program. Her hire was a huge mistake.

You don't need a huge investment in lacrosse to hire someone with the appropriate pedigree. We'll have to disagree, as far as the Fools Chase Money, Smart People Chase Opportunity.

Show me a program that is paying their assistants more than Rutgers is paying the HC, and perhaps I'll agree with you.

That is what I said in my previous post her hiring was a huge mistake and it was done at a time when the athletic department was just making hires for the sake of making hires.

You are claiming just hire an elite coach. Elite means coaches that have won championships. Why would those coaches leave their situations to go to an underfunded team? Answer- they wouldn't.

Hobbs sure does this is just more evidence Julie was in over her head her supposed mandate was to improve the other sports and any coach that goes 2-15 in a contract year should not get another contract but as Cali says we are not going to pry an elite coach away from a winning situation but you want to get someone from that good coaching pedigree ala Coach Ash and just hope we make the correct hire

So then why even try. Why not just fold the program.

Because we can get an assistant coach from a winning program who knows how it has been done. Like Ash.

Maybe they will turn into something elite. But they will still need funding.
