Women's Soccer Game Friday

Another cool stat

We have played 4 games and we have FOUR SHUTOUTS!!!

1-0, 2-0, 4-0, 0-0

That is an INCREDIBLE defense!!

Will be awesome to potentially get revenge on ttfp in the semis after beating RU in B1G tournament

Congratulations Knights! Now there is no question: best women's soccer team to ever play on the banks. Outstanding!

Murph really stepped up.
Never saw any goalkeeper take a penalty.
After we missed our 1st 2, she steps up and makes our 1st.
It was as if she said, "Let me show you how it's done!"

Fantastic job, Casey Murphy!!
Murph really stepped up.

Was a great game! So glad I got to see in person and cheer the team on to victory! Random thoughts:

- UVA dominated second half but ladies held tight.
- UVA outshot during regulation but didn't really have that many quality shots... think Murph had to make only one really good save where she jumped high to punch one over the net.
- RU controlled both OTs. They pressed the action and had some good opportunities.
- UVA goalie was behind the line and moved forward before our first PK and made the save. Prior to our second PK the linesman was talking to the UVA goalie pretty matter of factly. I'm fairly confident he was telling her she needed to be on the line, not behind the goal line. My thought at that time was "hell, why didn't make the damn call on the first PK?!"
- Freakin awesome that Murph kicked our crucial 3rd PK and nailed it!
- Big break when UVA player hit cross bar on potential game winning PK.
- I knew as long as we kept putting them in the net that Murph was bound to make a big save - and that she did!

We play the winner of Penn state /West Virginia Friday night December 4th at 7:30 Pm and the championship game is Sunday at 12 PM

So happy for our ladies women's soccer team, and for RUTGERS in general!

Absolutely historic win!
First time in Final Four (after 1st time in Final 8)
First time ANY RUTGERS team has beaten a #1 ranked team in ANY sport! Amazing!

Now let's get to the Final!'

Go RU!!!!!!

It is the first time RU women's soccer has knocked off the #1 team in the nation but not the first time "any Rutgers team has beaten a #1 team..." I'm not sure about other sports but RU women's basketball has defeated AT LEAST 5 #1 teams that I can recall off the top of my head. I can't recall all of the years involved but RU has knocked off Tennessee, Penn State (1995?), ND (2000 or 2001), Duke (2007? in a regional final, in a season when Duke had defeated RU by 40 at the RAC in December), and most recently, UConn.

And RU almost made women's bball history after that win over UConn when it traveled to Knoxville, who rose to #1 in the next polls, for the famous "Clock-gate" game. RU led by one + had effectively defeated the Vols in a legitimate 40 minute game but the time-keeper stopped the clock for a couple of seconds, which was enough time for the refs to call a foul on RU AFTER 40 minutes had passed by. Tennessee made both shots and the win was awarded to them in the extended game. This was documented repeatedly on replays on TV, with the announcers incredulous that Tennessee got to shoot those foul shots. Had RU been permitted to win, it would have been the first time (and probably still the only time) that any women's bball team had defeated #1 in successive game, which is pretty difficult to do schedule-wise, when you stop and think about it.

Football was just one play away when it lost to Alabama at GS in 1980 and I believe that Florida was #1 in at least one poll when RU tied them in Gainesville to open the 1985 season. RU fumbled in the red zone in the last minute of play IIRC and didn't get to attempt a FG to seal with win.

I wouldn't be surprised if men's soccer has defeated one or more #1 teams during the glory years of the late 1980s and early 1990s but perhaps someone else could comment upon that.

Good info - thanks!

Hopefully there is more of that to come in various sports!

Duke beat Stanford 2-1 last night, so they face FSU in the other semifinal.

PSU up 2-0 at the half.

PSU will be tough but we are certainly familiar with their players and style of play. I would think there would be a desire for some redemption for the performance in the B1G tournament. We certainly have been playing better since the first half of that match.

To follow up on ecojew's post, and I thought there was another post in a separate thread mentioning it, but Men's Soccer has beaten a # 1 ranked team before (in 1990), and it was also the first ever team at Rutgers to achieve a #1 ranking (in 1991). They beat Evansville who was #1 in the final 4 national semi before losing the national championship to UCLA by penalty kicks. The following season, by mid to late October they had climbed to #1 in the polls with a 15-1 record, but then lost to Princeton the same week and fell from the top spot in the following week's rankings.
