I went to the game last night.

Georgetown has a good team, and they won in the first minute of overtime - a breakdown in assignments leaving a girl wide open for a rocket of a shot just outside the box. With so many freshmen it is easy to lose focus for a short time and pay the price.

Their strength was shooting. It seemed like every shot had lots of pace and was directly on goal. I don't remember seeing a team with that kind of shot consistency before.

RU has always had trouble finishing, so they had a big advantage there. Other than that, I felt like we had the best side, but we did not dominate field position as much as we normally do. I felt we were just a step slow in the first half, but picked it up later on.

I think we will have our share of mistakes early in the season while the freshmen acclimate to the new level of play. Whether we make noise in the post-season will depend on how strongly they come on.

I sat next to Wright's family and former coach - really nice people. I so enjoyed getting their viewpoints on things; though I should have perhaps listened more and talked less. There is nothing I enjoy more as a fan than learning that an RU athlete comes from such a quality family.

Loyal -Son, was there also. Generally agree with your analysis. I had a feeling Georgetown would be tough. We definitely were off our game in the 1st half. Glad to see Madison Tiernan finding the back of the net. What a rocket that was. Do you you think that Brittany LaPlante's blast over the cross bar as time expired in regulation would have counted? I thought it would have. She looks like a player & a scorer. Believe her playing time will increase as we go forward. This freshman class is very talented, but as you say, with some, their anticipation & quickness at this level has to pick up. Thought that it was one of the most poorly officiated games that I can remember seeing. Did it appear to you that Colby Ciarrocca was off sides on what would have been the game winning goal? It didn't appear to me that she was. And by the way, Kenie Wright is really good & some tough little hombre. Glad to hear that her people are so nice.

my opinion .... for whatevers its worth
For the time until the absurd penalty call Georgetown was down on its heels and being beaten to every ball. . That girl was out of the box, the defender hit all ball, the ref was behind them and visionally challenged, the offended girl had her back to the goal and was not attacking. There are not many refs on the planet Earth, or perhaps surrounding planets, that would award a penalty shot
Young team deflated and Georgetown draws a new life

Then the goal called back. The ball was through and between the goalie and the attacker. With my eyes , not perfect, but that cannot be offsides

Third on a corner kick with the goalie out of position a header in the corner of the net was redirected by a defenders forearm no call. Personally i am a fan but Georgetown outplayed us but the ref and linesmen made this very tough to watch

Yes, the penalty call was beyond belief TERRIBLE. To be fair ,shortly thereafter we did pull a girl down in the box & that guy tried to make up with a non call. However the pull down may not have taken place without the first botched call. As you indicated, the goal gave the Hoyas life.

Tough loss. Could hurt come seeding time, BUT, growing pains. Kinda like the Providence tie. Had a bad feeling once I saw it was in OT. Next!

I had no idea whether the off-sides was legitimate or not. I am not pleased to hear it should have counted .

I thought I saw the ball hit the defender in the arms right in front of the goal also, but assumed my eyes were deceiving me when it was not called. Not sure how an official could have missed that.

I also did not like the officiating at all.

I think we will have a good season. Georgetown had a great offense, but we shut them out except for the defensive lapse in overtime (and the bogus penalty kick). That means we have allowed 2 goals all year that were not penalty kicks; one being in the first half of the first game, I believe.

That is with two freshman defenders and a sophomore who is average in height at best (though tough as nails). IMO keeping the opposing team from scoring is what separates the strong teams from the pretenders, and I think we are close to being solid there already.

I really like LaPlant also. She scored an incredible amount of goals in HS, but I don't think she was one of our highest rated recruits. I don't know if the goal would have counted. I assume the officials thought not, since I didn't see it go up on the scoreboard as a shot.
