Wrestling parents brawling in Phillipsburg, NJ:

They take their wrestling serious in Phillipsburg. Some of the scraps looked like good matches in there.

So many Phillipsburg people are out of their minds. Probably the trashiest part of NJ

Ridiculous statement
I’ve been to high school athletic events all over the state. There is no fan section that is more poorly behaved than Phillipsburg. I’ve been at matches where the parents/grandparents literally spit at/on opposing wrestlers, coaches, refs, etc. I’ve seen refs needed to be escorted to their cars by security.

You can vouch for them all you want, I’ve never seen anything like a Phillipsburg crowd at a competitive match. Maybe the crowds at the schools in Hamilton in various sports. The closer you get to the PA border, the wilder the people get.

lol that’s ridiculous. I went to Phillipsburg and I still live about 20 minutes from there. I’ve never heard of any issues like that. Fans there can definitely be passionate but I’ve never heard anything like you’re saying.

To say it’s the trashiest part of the state is just crazy.

The only out of control event I can recall was the Belleville match in the early 90s where a brawl broke out because Belleville fans got upset because PBurg rolled them.

Lol Belleville definitely gets rowdy. They had to stop scheduling Fri night fb vs Nutley because too many brawls.
And they had a pretty good wrestling team back then, quite a few paison state champs

Wrestled there in the sectional finals in early 90’s. I’m sitting on the bench and some guy yells, “son, you should have never gotten off the bus”. I look back and the guy was at least 70.
lol I graduated in 98 but I attended pretty much all matches when I was in elementary school. What team did you wrestle for?

Ever been to a Robbinsville sports event?

I Was warming up for regions my freshman year at old region 1 and the old phillipsburg guys used to all sit in the front row mat side and they taunted me for 10 minutes while I warmed up telling me I was ”going to get killed” and that their guy was “gonna get me” . Not going to lie it definitely intimidated me a bit at the time but I laugh about it now, argued with plenty of shore conference guys over the years about the toughest environments to wrestle and always used P-burg fans as my reasoning why nothing topped region 1 environment

No better atmosphere than a match at the pit. I always heard stories about it and a local brought me to a match while in college. Been a Phillipsburg fan ever since. Absolutely a great tradition.

Even since they moved to the new gym the passion over there is a sight to see. It's pretty cool how much it means to the community over there. When guys from the class of 1948 show up, you know it means something.

I definitely wouldnt call it the trashiest part of the state...that's nuts

that said, a buddy of mine who is completely locked into the HS wrestling scene (and has been for years) definitely doesnt speak highly of P-burg. and I will just leave it at that...LOL

They’re an interesting bunch

Definitely passionate and the pit was an epic atmosphere

I have not been through the new gym, but it is certainly large, and by all accounts, is great as well

25 years ago they had season tickets for wrestling, I thought it was crazy, but in hindsight, it just goes to show you the passionate they have

Their fans are certainly over the top, though, I don’t think there’s any denying that

We had season tickets growing up lol.. you basically needed to have them to get in for a big match.

Never expected to a comment like, been to every wrestling match door the last 4 years and never seen anything that would warrant a comment.
Robbinsville wrestling also isn’t good. Check out a baseball/softball or a boy basketball game when they’re decent. They’re very mouthy towards their own coaches.

The Pit was the most intimidating place I ever wrestled. In 79, I lost a close match to multiple state qualifier and Placewinner, and in 81 was upset in my match, one of only a few losses that year. The match still haunts me.

Was there a waiting list to get them or was it fairly easy? I always figured they were handed down from generation to generation, as the place was not big, and it felt like everyone in the town was at the matches.

That's what I meant...wasn't specific to Wrestling. Wonderful people.

To be clear though I loved wrestling P-Burg and p-burg kids .. my dad built them up as the villain when I was younger so I always had that extra boost against them , also loved that the worst kid in their line up or a back up off the bench would just step up and beat state qualifier level kids , I can’t count how many times a kid from p-burg was down 10-2 and you turn around and they have the kid flat getting the pin
