WSJ on Ash's Rugby Style Tackling

I'm not going to sign in for the Wall Street Journal, lol. But if its the same as the Pete Carroll's Seahawks Rugby Tackling Drills that was all over last year, this is a great video.

I wish I was coaching youth ball again because this video was a AAAAAHHHHHHHH, Lightbulb Is On moment for me. I was a chest to chest tackling coach before USA FOOTBALL made the Heads Up program mandatory. I thought that this was the safest way to tackle because it kept the heads up while old school, shoulder tackling was more dangerous since it had kids go into tackles without any control and most of the times too low. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that my boys and girl wrapping up and making tackles, they were getting run over. Pete Carroll's video came out about a couple of years too late to save my youth coaching career, lol.

You can bypass the WSJ's pay wall by doing a google search for an exact phrase from the small portion of the article that's visible. Then when you click the link for that article, you'll have the whole thing. The WSJ has an arrangement with Google to display the whole article when the link is clicked from Google.

Sorry that's how I found it. Didn't realize there was a pay wall.

Ash is big on fundamentals. Most teams are generally bad tacklers these days. They like to "blow-up" players and not wrap up. They were traught dangerous non-sense about putting facemask in the numbers. "Rugby style" tackling is just want old school football tackling used to be. Shows how bad things got that people think this is all new stuff from Australia or summin

This video is the sole reason why I know he will improve our Defense. Our tackling technique is soo flawed and piss poor. Even when our guys are in the right place at the right time we cant seem to bring anyone down. Ash simply understands how important hands in tackling technique is and how it sets apart great defenses from bad ones.

This is how I teach tackling as a DC. I absolutely love it. I have changed our pop warner level to tackle like this and our kids have bought we. After switching to this style we reduced concussions and shoulder injuries. It has also helped some of our smaller kids become very proficient tacklers without having their heads hit knees (number 1 cause of concussions).

Big fan of this.
