Spoiler Alert: Our last NCAA Tournament win. And, of course, Bill Raftery was doing the game.

Tons of games from 1980s and 1990's posted on YouTube by "Rob Jenkins" in the last few months. A plethora of RU Football & Men's & Women's basketball games from '80's & '90's. Roy Hinson, Sue Wicks, Tyronne Stowe, John Battle, Scott Erney, Keith Hughes and some really overmatched Craig Littlepage teams!

Thank you to Rob wherever you are. Awesome stuff.

I remember watching this in my parents house with my dad, who passed away 8 years ago. He was such a big Rutgers fan. Great memories. Classy uniforms too. Thanks for posting this.

I was on the bus too. Drove back to Hartford on Sunday to watch our loss to Chris Mullin led St Johns. I remember Lou Carnesecca having a long conversation with Roy Hinson in the handshake line after the game.

That 82-83 team was really good. Had two future NBA players in Hinson and Battle. Should have been ranked. Could have had a shot at beating St John's in round 2 if Hinson wasn't playing on a bad ankle. We beat them the year before at the RAC

And RU's Jimmy Valvano coached the NC State Wolfpack to the championship in that tourney.

I was at the SW Louisiana game by myself that we won on March 18, 1983. I also came back on Sunday March 20, 1983 and saw us lose to the Johnnies and Chris Mullin. Our media guide still has the dates of the games listed wrong as they have listed 3/17 and 3/19 It poured rain all the way home after the SW La. win and I had a blowout when I hit a pothole on a curve. It was pitch dark in the rain. I changed my tire and got drenched and drove all the way home without a spare. I returned on Sunday with my best friend from teaching and saw Mullin really light us up. It was back & forth in the first half. The media guide also has the score wrong as well. It says we lost 56-55. I think it was 66-55. I have the articles for both games in a scrapbook on old RU games. How am I certain of the dates? The 20th was my wife's birthday and she said I could go back to see the game on Sunday. It was the biggest mistake I ever made in my life. When I got home I saw how disappointed she was that I had gone and she went out with her mom. Bless her soul in heaven, this still haunts me to this day and always will. There were plenty of more games but my wife's birthday was only once a year. The articles verify the dates as well plus the brackets from the NCAA Tournament in my scrapbook also have the dates. My wife was an absolute angel. She was the one who told me to buy season tickets after we beat Penn State in 1989 so that I could bring our 2 year old son to every game and bond with him. He still goes to every home game with me and I have had the season tickets for 31 years. I have attended games since 1971 and have been at every home game since 77 when the RAC opened accept for very few.

knights1212, that is a nice story, thanks for sharing. I'm sorry for your losses, but your wife sounds like she was a wonderful person! Don't be too hard on yourself, Rutgers clearly was and still is a big passion of yours, and judging from your descriptions of your wife, it would probably make your wife sad to know that you still beat yourself up for that decision.

Knights1212, I too bought season tickets after that Penn State game, and my son was also 2 at the time. He and I have gone to many games together over these 30 years, and this year, since my move to Florida, he now owns those season tickets and goes to every home game with his gf. Through all the years of watching our team struggle, I wouldn’t trade those days of bonding with my son for anything. Your wife was a smart lady.

My Rutgers fandom started when my Mom persuaded my Dad to get season tickets, so we could bond as well. Our first year was in 1982 and my Dad and I continued to go to games together until the end of the 2016-17 season. The combination of bad basketball and my Dad's declining health (he is in a nursing home now) made me give up the tickets. My son, who is now eight and plays basketball himself now might make me return next year. I will always have a warm spot in my heart for the RAC and RU athletics, as it really was something that made me and my Dad stay close over the years.

We beat St. John’s the year before and both teams had this game circled

We took control in the first half ...but let St. John’s hang around and it was Basically could have a 8-11 point half time lead

I was probably in that bus.

So was I! Those of us in the back of the bus had some fun making a HUGE deal out of the imagined “smell” every time someone came out of the bathroom. It was hilarious.

“OHHHH MY GODDDDDD! WHHOOOOOO!!! That is NASTY!!!”

After a few of those, there was a lot less traffic going to the bathroom!

Knights 1212 - We all are human. We make decisions and sometime we make mistakes. Hopefully small ones that are forgiven. I am sure your wife has forgiven you. Get rid of the rear view mirror of regret and know that your wife was lucky to be married to a good guy, just as you were fortunate to be married to her.

thanks for posting, hadnt seen these. Rob Jenkins doing a great job...wow alot of nuggets of womens hoops. Along with RU hoops project on Youtube we finally are building a pretty good archive

Was great to see Battle in action in both the SW Louisiana and Notre Dame videos. I don't recall much fanfare around his recruitment and he really exploded, his last 2 years on the banks. Not sure if anyone really saw that coming. Went on to play 10 years in the NBA, one of the longer careers for an RU grad.

I for one would like to see these players celebrated. RU did something at halftime of the Maryland blowout which really was poorly presented IMO

We never celebrated the 91 team on the 25th annivesary and we didnt celebrate that 83 team for the 35th anniversary

and no celebrating of the 89 for its 30 years. RU has no recent history of success, it needs to celebrate their history with more than a glancing mention,.

RU really dropped the ball on celebrating the '89 team. The final home game this season vs. Penn State is March 6... 3/9/89 was the date of the A-10 classic over PSU at the RAC.

The combination of Senior Night and celebrating the 30th anniversary of the '89 team, especially with the Nittany Lions in the house, would have been a special evening.

Thank you for the kind words from several of you. My wife was a Douglass graduate but was never a sports fanatic like me. She knew my love of sports and would attend games with me if my son could not attend and she would wear her scarlet knight on a horse pendant along with RU colors. She never wanted me to go alone to a game. I coached high school track & cross country for 39 years and she came to many of my meets. When our son became a top cross country runner and 3200 meter runner she became a real fan and was so proud of him. I don't really beat myself up but I wish I had stayed home for her birthday as she always did so much for me and made me feel so important. She always thought of all animals & people before herself. She didn't want attention brought to herself. She was amazing.

I remember a wall poster of John Battle that I believe was put together by another team member, Steve Perry? Perry was a Rhodes Scholar finalist. The poster had John on top of a tank, wearing camo fatigues and RU jersey, with "Get Ready for Battle" as the title.

I took a bus up for this game. Would love to see the Chris Remley winner vs Notre Dame.

That Remley shot vs. ND was at the Meadowlands Arena, correct? I remember me and my dorm mates screaming "NOOOOO" when Remley put it up but then going nuts when he made it.

Agree that certain players should be honored also. Hinson, Battle, Copeland and whoever else.

The 76 team...plus Kelvin Troy, Brian Ellerbe, Tom Savage...oh my God, I gotta go, but I could go on.

It's kind of sad to celebrate a team just for making the damn tournament. I mean, the 89 team was 10-12 and got hot late. Yippee! (And I was there for Penn State AND Iowa, so don't tell me I don't understand.) At least 91 was a regular-season conference champion. Thin gruel, indeed.

But when that's all we've had for a long time, I agree. A special night for each of those teams is fine with me. But hopefully some day we will laugh at someone who suggests honoring minimal achievement.

Hopefully.

yes its sad. They won the A10 champioship tourney..that counts for something, its a championship not just a tourney experience and they went from like 8-23 the year before. 91 was the A10 regular season champs.

We have shit history in basketball save for the final 4..why not celebrate it. Meanwhile the thing they did back in early January was just poorly done.

It makes more sense to honor the 1989 team than 1991 team. They actually won the conference championship. There is no shame in honoring a champion. And it was special as hell for those us that were on board from the start of that season. Regular season championship is not a real thing. It just gets you the top seed in the tournament to crown the conference championship.

Watching the NCAA game, did not realize Sellers was a coach that year.

82 was a good year to start with season tix! WVU game. One of my all-time favorite RAC moments.

We need to meet one of these days...I have had season tickets since the day one the RAC
Opened (I still have the Rutgers v USSR poster) with my dad since I was 8...the first year the RAC opened. Before my first sons was born, (both of which get to a bunch of games Owen year) you count on your hands the number of homes I missed at the RAC......

Do it...i coach my sons for years and, though that takes up a lot of time, are now 13 and almost 12 and very into it...

Scarlet, Perhaps we can meet at one of the 3 remaining home games. Do you belong to the Court Club as I go to all of their meetings as well.

That was an awesome road trip with a bunch of frat brothers. We also went to the St John's game.
Back then we hardly knew what this ESPN thing was. We were impressed that the Johnnies game was on CBS.
