You Tube: 1983 NCAAs - RU v. SW Louisiana

I was at the SW Louisiana game by myself that we won on March 18, 1983. I also came back on Sunday March 20, 1983 and saw us lose to the Johnnies and Chris Mullin. Our media guide still has the dates of the games listed wrong as they have listed 3/17 and 3/19 It poured rain all the way home after the SW La. win and I had a blowout when I hit a pothole on a curve. It was pitch dark in the rain. I changed my tire and got drenched and drove all the way home without a spare. I returned on Sunday with my best friend from teaching and saw Mullin really light us up. It was back & forth in the first half. The media guide also has the score wrong as well. It says we lost 56-55. I think it was 66-55. I have the articles for both games in a scrapbook on old RU games. How am I certain of the dates? The 20th was my wife's birthday and she said I could go back to see the game on Sunday. It was the biggest mistake I ever made in my life. When I got home I saw how disappointed she was that I had gone and she went out with her mom. Bless her soul in heaven, this still haunts me to this day and always will. There were plenty of more games but my wife's birthday was only once a year. The articles verify the dates as well plus the brackets from the NCAA Tournament in my scrapbook also have the dates. My wife was an absolute angel. She was the one who told me to buy season tickets after we beat Penn State in 1989 so that I could bring our 2 year old son to every game and bond with him. He still goes to every home game with me and I have had the season tickets for 31 years. I have attended games since 1971 and have been at every home game since 77 when the RAC opened accept for very few.

Nice story . Thanks for sharing .
The tournament is actually back in Hartford this year.

Need to watch this - I recall it not being on TV in SNJ, as I had gone home for a 4-day weekend and had no idea it wouldn't be on.

Oh the old days when you would get only one game on at a time . A great game or your team could be playing and you couldn’t watch. So much better now .

Was just trying to remember why I wasn't at that 83 game.. SPRING BREAK! Damn shame the dates coincided.

I for one would like to see these players celebrated. RU did something at halftime of the Maryland blowout which really was poorly presented IMO

We never celebrated the 91 team on the 25th annivesary and we didnt celebrate that 83 team for the 35th anniversary

and no celebrating of the 89 for its 30 years. RU has no recent history of success, it needs to celebrate their history with more than a glancing mention,.

I get it’s been awhile since we have been there but should we really be celebrating a team just for making the NCAA tournament?

THat was my sophomore year. I just assumed we would get into the tournament every year since so many schools did. Silly me

If the game was not a featured game in market, they re-ran them all overnight into the next morning. So you may not have seen this live but could watch it in its entirety at some point. But I agree, it’s much better these days.

Was great to watch game, and forgot that Hinson did not do much.

RU really dropped the ball on celebrating the '89 team. The final home game this season vs. Penn State is March 6... 3/9/89 was the date of the A-10 classic over PSU at the RAC.

The combination of Senior Night and celebrating the 30th anniversary of the '89 team, especially with the Nittany Lions in the house, would have been a special evening.

Last month, I noted that RU dropped the ball by not celebrating the '89 team tomorrow night at the RAC. As it turns out, it's going to be quite an evening anyway. Still, it could be even more memorable if the '89 squad was in the house.

I remember a wall poster of John Battle that I believe was put together by another team member, Steve Perry? Perry was a Rhodes Scholar finalist. The poster had John on top of a tank, wearing camo fatigues and RU jersey, with "Get Ready for Battle" as the title.

Wasn't that the schedule poster for that season?

No. Battle on a tank in camo pants and boots and Rutgers jersey was sent to media. Wasn’t distributed to general public otherwise there’d be one hanging in my man cave right now.

Nope. The schedule poster said "Join the Battle" and featured an action shot of Battle and was about 16" x 24". I have several of them in my attic.

The "Get Ready for Battle" poster with Battle on a tank had a bunch of quotes on it from the likes of Red Auerbach and opposing coaches. There's a black and white photo of it in the following season's media guide. Trust me.

Well ...I have both somewhere then

I was in the Florida Keys on spring break trying to listen on a crappy radio. We gave up and only saw the score after the game. Tough to miss that one.

Enjoyed watching again, thanks. Its funny because there was no 3 point shot so if you get down by 8-10 you need 5 possessions to catch up, if they don't score. Seems hard to do versus the 3 pointers now.
