Let’s face it. After 1 and 2, it’s pretty much a coin toss.

I don't know any team dynamics...I can just guess.

I have a meeting with Derkack and let him know our season essentially rides on him and what he can bring to the team on the defensive end. He has been a part of the problem and unlike some of the others there is room for improvement with him (effort).

JWill 32
Harper 32
Derkack 32
Ace 32
Ogbole 20

JaMike 32
Somer 20

I have 5 players (JaMike) for 4 slots and they all play starters minutes. Lathan and O split the 5.

If Grant is anywhere close to playable he gets 10 minutes.
PJ may get some 1st half run when the opposition has a less potent lineup.
If the game is close and evolves to a rock fight I am playing 7

Who is starting really doesn't matter. The half court defense/rebounding stinks and the offense is limited to Bailey and Harper because there is no offensive flow to get other players open shots. The shots they do take are often missed because of pressure to be successful or simple lack of talent. The woeful foul shooting comes back to haunt Rutgers in close games.Bottom line high expectations are slowly changing to bitter disappointment.

Let AB and DH do their thing and bombs away for Hayes and Acuff. Volume 3s and just try to outscore the opponent. Def stinks anyway.

Then us Martini for the same reason, Ogbole and JWill as needed. IMHO. I don’t like it but we might as well go all in on offense and not even fool ourselves that one or two defensive specialist is going to help.

We don’t have a choice but to play both Dylan and Ace 35 minutes each. They just can’t be off the floor more than a few minutes each half, and NEVER at the same time.

That's 70 minutes, leaving 130 for the rest of this group:

- 35 combined for Ogbole and Sommerville (I like Ace at the C spot for 5 minutes a game).

- 95 left, the lion’s share of which should go to JMike, JWill, and Derkack, with some Hayes and Acuff mixed in (ride them if they’re hitting threes, sit them if they’re not).

- Martini out of the rotation, and like you said, Grant IN as part of the 95 minutes. Grant is no savior, but he is the ONLY 6-8 or 6-9 athletic wing who can mix it up on this team. Good lord, he HAS to be better than what we’ve been getting from Martini.

Isn't this basically what has been happening?
The defense is still bad with Derkack, JWill and Davis playing most of the minutes.

What exactly be changing?

Let's agree to disagree.......we certainly can play Ace and Dylan 32 minutes and I think the Indiana game is Exhibit A. The offense still can go on when only 1 of them is on the court.

We have to look short and medium term with these 2.
Short term....how are they going to play the last 4 minutes of the game
Medium term....how are they going to hold up by the end of the year

If you want to make a change - this is the other strategy.
The concept of playing Davis, JWill and Derkack more isn’t a change.

Cut Martini's minutes? Sure. But he is 7th in minutes on the season.
Acuff and Hayes are literally 9th and 10th.

If you want a change, look at the players actually on the floor.

Derkack isn't playing 32 minutes and he isn't starting and he has been in the dog house.

My hope is that with this mini 3 game homestand the crowd will get us to play D like at the Penn State game.

I really want Acuff and Hayes out. I want 5 perimeter guys that will all defend.

I think you’re kidding yourself that enough guys on this squad can play D. I’m not mocking you just emphasizing how bad this team is defensively.

Why can't Dylan and Ace play 38 minutes the7're 18 years old they get a 3-4 minute break every 4 minutes I don't get it because we need both of them for 38 minutes and NEVER EVER should both of them be off the floor together which Pikell has done and I don't get that

Feel free to mock me....

It just doesn't make sense unless the "5" position is really really bad.....which could be it.

Individually, with the exception of Cliff, we are better defensively than last year.......I think/hope

Why can't someone run a 3:45 mile or a sub 2 hour marathon?

Why do hockey players need to come off the ice after 45 seconds shifts and are absolutely gassed if on the ice for 2 minutes?

Plus Ace isn't in the best cardio shape.

The both of them should never ever be off the floor is a debate where i can see both sides. It is a debate with 2 sides that make sense. I see both sides and am on the fence.

If we continue to insist on having our bigs switch on the perimeter and chase guards and wings around, I would like to see Dortsch get some minutes at the 5. Ogbole is always out of position, has terrible instincts and plays bad post defense, which is why he is always getting pulled, so I would give Dortsch some of his minutes. Hard to believe he could be worse.

Not mocking. Just us all having a good discussion because we care and want the team to win. I for one love defense first but sometimes you have to look at the analytics. Our defense has been terrible with the names you want more of. And two or our top 4 three point shooters are ninth and tenth in minutes. When I was coaching HS I found if you want to shake it up you have to really shake it up. You can’t convince yourself things will just get better if you leave them the way they’ve been for so long.

Did you have to?

I don't know why the D hasn't been good with those names. I think there is no debating they give us the best chance.

The problem with the shake up is no one is really deserving of the extra minutes and i truly feel our best 5 perimeter players (unfortunately) are those 5.

I'd love Grant to come out of nowhere and do what Mag did as a sophomore against Purdue....but given the fact that he is sitting over Martini I am losing hope that is in the cards.

This is a thread worth the discussion.

I am kinda with Greene on the players in the rotation, though not exactly on the minutes.

For example, I agree with one poster (not Greene) that other than foul trouble and perhaps in-game "dings", Harper and Bailey will and should be able to, and should therefore play, more than 32 mpg ... perhaps 34-35 mpg. That would allow them to get 2-3 mpg rest each half - preferably not resting at the same time.

And I agree with another poster that Bailey can play 3-5 mpg at Center, - not every game, but in some match-ups, reducing Ogbole/Sommerville to 35 mpg from 40 mpg.

If Davis is finally normalizing on shooting, and can raise his 3-point FG to 30% ish - and then keep it there (mathematically that would mean hitting perhaps 7 of his next 20 3-point FG tries to get him to 30%) ... and shoot maybe 42% from 2 (he has hit 7-17 from 2-point range since he began starting vs PSU) - he is currently at 38% from 2, so to get to 41% on the year - and then maintain that afterwards - he'd have to shoot 50% from 2 for the next 4-6 games (so ... 7-14 or 7-15, or maybe 11-23 over the next 4-6 games?), to catch up to where he should have been from earlier - then maintain 42% from 2 ongoing ... THEN he could earn 30 mpg - his on-ball defense (assuming it maintains at the level of the last 5 games) would be important enough and his offense would then NOT be too much a drag - and in fact along with what has been an outstanding assist to turnover rate might be a net positive. Thus justifying even more minutes - say 30 mpg.

Williams: he really has to show better judgment driving than he has the last couple of games, and Indiana especially. That said, I noticed in the Indiana game that RU's spacing when Williams drives is awful. Sommerville and Ogbole stay planted in the middle of the lane, essentially bringing their defender TO Williams as Williams drives - and NOT sliding away to create space to give Williams a person to pass to within the lane. When Williams drives into the lane and there are 2-3 defenders around him, Sommerville and Ogbole are STILL not open - because of poor movement and spacing on their part. So, while Williams gets some blame, it is probably not entirely his fault (kind of like who is at fault for incomplete or inaccurate passes - sometimes it is not the QB, but the WR's for running wrong routes).

FYI: I have noticed both Harper and Bailey waving away Ogbole or Sommerville at times when those 2 are planted in the lane, or the high or low post. I high screen for either Bailey, Harper or Williams is fine ... planting in the middle of the lane is not - it clogs up spacing that limits the effectiveness of the penetration ability of Harper, Bailey or Williams.

And I think, Greene, ONE of Acuff or Hayes must be hoped for to provide 12-15 mpg at this stage - for their potential offense. As the 8th man in the rotation ... and I am guessing it will be Acuff. Leaving Hayes (and occasionally Martini) as situational players against zones, or if they pop in, get a chance to take a quick 3 - and MAKE the 3 ... then you go a little longer with them.

Derkack is a ... conundrum. Last year he shot 55% from 2-point range ... that is really good. Sure, the schedule was in a weak conference. BUT ... against P5 teams (Georgetown, Cincy, Florida), all on the road, he shot a combined 16-26 from TWO-point range - so it is not like he is incapable of doing this against good competition, right? And he was just a Sophomore. THIS season, he is 43% from 2-point range ... ouch. He IS 7-15 from 2 versus ND, Alabama and Texas A&M ... plus 2-3 vs PSU and 2-4 vs Princeton ... so the capability is there. The 3's? Who knows what he can do. LAST season in his 1st 27 games he shot 24% from 3, averaging 3 3-pointers per game attempted. In his last 5 games, he shot 36% from 3, averaging taking almost 8 3-pointers per game - and that included a 1-10 3-pointer game in that span (and a 1-6 - actually 2-16 over his last 2 games - which were universally an awful 2-game span for him, scoring a total of just 10 points in the 2 games. It would be important for him to score enough to be able to play more minutes - because he does a lot of good things (and he has to stay on his feet when playing defense, to stay in position) ... at his best he can really make things happen for a team (for example, 36 assists to 20 TO - not amazing, but decent Ass/TO ratio for a non-PG).

So, if by MPG:

Harper - 35
Bailey - 34
Williams - 28
Davis - 28
Derkack - 25 mpg?
Ogbole/Sommerville - 35 (the split de[ending on who is doing well with a game's match-ups)

That is 7 players, 185 minutes ... leaving 15 mpg for situational contributors such as Acuff, Hayes ... MAYBE Martini if he is forced into a situation ... Grant. Or if foul trouble happens, which can occur from time to time.

I’d debate they give us the best chance. The best chance for what, to do what we’ve been doing. I think like Pike you’re being biased just because you like those guys and “want” them to do better. That doesn’t mean they’ll do anything other than what they’ve been doing. And under that thinking if Hayes Martini and Acuff are shooting threes at almost 40% why wouldn’t they continue to if given a lot more shots.

Thanks for engaging. It is a fun, worthwhile discussion. I respect what you’re saying I just think it’s fools gold the way you’ve analyzed JMike and Dercack. JMike was a 22% three point shooter all of last year. And he’s the same this year. He is what he is. To think he could sniff 30% is just unrealistic.

And with Dercack you’re just Cherry picking a few games from Merrimack in hopes he can do that for a longer stretch. You’ve seen him for many games this year and I’d also say he is what he is. And only 20% from 3. Cherry picking a ncaa run or vs Cliff is what got us in trouble with analyzing Martini in the off-season.

Don't worry. Many people here were pretty confident JWill and Davis would shoot better this year.

They all just need a couple more games to improve on their 3pt shooting.
Davis: 22.2% (22.2% career)
Derkack: 20.8% (25.6% career)
Williams: 28.6% (26.0% career)

I'm sure they'll improve as we play better teams and better defenses......

1) Davis: He was a true freshman last year. I believe players CAN improve. I do not think it is wild to think Davis could improve his offense from Freshman to Sophomore, and then to Junior seasons. Last season should not be his ceiling. Nor should this season. It may be fools gold, but it is not like I am suggesting he become a great shooter - just not as bad. 42% from 2-point range is NOT particularly good, nor is 30% from 3.

2) Derkack is an interesting case. He is shooting 21% from 3 this year. He is a career 23-24% 3-point shooter. Last year in 33-34 games he shot 27% from 3 - as a sophomore. I am not suggesting he would be a lights out 3-point shooter. This season, so afr, is cherry picked for Derkack - he has attempted just 24 3's - that is a really small sample size (2 more made 3's, for 7-24, is a 29% rate versus the 21% rate he now shows). And last year he shot 55% from 2-point range while this year he is at 43% ... that is ridiculous underperformance. How would he look at 49% 2-point and 29% 3-point ... he'd then be at 43% overall FG ... and probably be at 8.5 ppg versus 7.3 ppg. He'd look a lot better, eh - and STILL be less efficient than last year. You can't say he is what he is on just 24 3-point attempts.

3) I do not think Ogbole/Sommerville versus Omoruyi, or even Omoruyi/Woolfolk is the issue this season - it lies elsewhere, like Martini - that is a BIG miss (Martini is actually doing exactly what he did as a Junior, essentially - in mpg and other stats ... and FYI, since the Merrimack game, Martini is 4-16 3-point FG ... Davis in that exact same stretch is 4-15 from 3-point, but 4-11 his last 3 games ... just saying), and the underperformance of Acuff and Derkack - and Hayes horrible defense and inconsistent 3-point shooting (hot one game, very cold 2 games) ... Hayes, since after the Kennesaw St game, in 9 games since then is 24% 3-point shooting, 5-21 from 3 ... awful.

My hope is that with this mini 3 game homestand the crowd will get us to play D like at the Penn State game.

I really want Acuff and Hayes out. I want 5 perimeter guys that will all defend.
You don’t have them. There are not 5 guys who can defend. The best example is Like matching out JMike game after game. Not a good defender and an absolute horrific offensive player who hurts us more than helps us. Until JMike is out of the rotation expect the same results.
Coaching staff is lost and it’s sad watching.

Rather than limiting the discussion to who should start and how many minutes each guy should get, another way to look at it is which 5 should play together and for how many minutes during the game.

It’s hard to blindly assign minutes to a guy without knowing who he’ll be playing with.

For example, if we look at 4-minute increments each, as follows, you get some unusual pairings:

First half
JMike, Dylan, JWill, Ace, Ogbole
Dylan, Derkack, JWill Ace, Lathan
Dylan, Derkack, Acuff, Lathan, Ogbole
JMike, JWill, Hayes, Ace, Grant
Dylan, Derkack, Ace, Grant, Ogbole

In this scenario, you have 10 guys seeing floor time in the first half:

Dylan and Ace: 16 minutes each
Derkack, JWill and Ogbole: 12 minutes each
JMike, Lathan and Grant: 8 minutes each
Acuff and Hayes: 4 minutes each

You could do the same thing in the second half except you swap Lathan and Ogbole’s minutes, so for the game you get a total of:

Dylan and Ace: 32 minutes each
Derkack and JWill: 24 minutes each
Lathan and Ogbole: 20 minutes each
JMike and Grant: 16 minutes each
Acuff and Hayes: 8 minutes each

Dylan
Ace
JMike
Lathan (unless you want the opening tip, then EO)
Acuff (Dercack if he improves his defensive effort)

A big problem with this team that hasn’t been said is that this team lacks quality leadership. How do you get quality team play when your two captains either play sloppy and uncontrolled (JWill) or can’t get on the floor with bad defense/shooting (Martini). Or is always smiling when you need them to get pissed and fired up (JWill).

As good as Dylan and Ace are, you can’t, nor should, make them captain. You need a veteran that plays with controlled confidence/swagger and is capable of even calling out our superstar freshmen if they make mistakes. We don’t have a guy on our team where if you were the opposing fanbase, you’d say “you hate that guy.” No Geo, Ron. And even though we dislike past history that also includes Eugene, Mag, Mulcahy. (I’m not defending those three, but maybe there’s something to that?)

Dercack and Acuff are veterans and play with some swagger, but they are new to our defensive system. JMike is one of our best, experienced defenders. Someone (or combination of the three) needs to step up and be a vocal leader of this team.

I was going to post exactly what you wrote about Bailey waving off LS to get the fvck out of the lane.

I was watching Kentucky - Florida while the hockey game was in intermission. Kentucky had 2 of their best players isolated on the left wing while the other 3 were far way on the weak side. I saw Duke do this many possessions from the top of the circle with Flagg and the other frosh. Wonder why we don't do this from time to time with Ace and Dylan.

Rather than limiting the discussion to who should start and how many minutes each guy should get, another way to look at it is which 5 should play together and for how many minutes during the game.

It’s hard to blindly assign minutes to a guy without knowing who he’ll be playing with.

For example, if we look at 4-minute increments each, as follows, you get some unusual pairings:

First half
JMike, Dylan, JWill, Ace, Ogbole
Dylan, Derkack, JWill Ace, Lathan
Dylan, Derkack, Acuff, Lathan, Ogbole
JMike, JWill, Hayes, Ace, Grant
Dylan, Derkack, Ace, Grant, Ogbole

In this scenario, you have 10 guys seeing floor time:

Dylan and Ace: 16 minutes each
Derkack, JWill and Ogbole: 12 minutes each
JMike, Lathan and Grant: 8 minutes each
Acuff and Hayes: 4 minutes each

You could do the same thing in the second half except you swap Lathan and Ogbole’s minutes, so for the game you get a total of:

Dylan and Ace: 32 minutes each
Derkack and JWill: 24 minutes each
Lathan and Ogbole: 20 minutes each
JMike and Grant: 16 minutes each
Acuff and Hayes: 8 minutes each
Better idea!

Styles makes fights.

Ace and Dylan are going to dominate the ball and will see double and triple teams along with Zones. Why would Pike surround them with 2 Non shooters or scorers???? You are giving the opponents the upper hand because we have no threat outside of 2 guys to shoot let alone score and on the defensive side they are getting beat anyway.

Jwill and JMike are out there with Ace n Dylanto play great D and help out in other ways. Popular response I hear! Well how’s that working out? Neither have played good defense and we still get killed on the glass.

So, Pike doubles down and continues to play the same rotation?? It’s absolutely a huge Miss.

Give Ace and Dylan shooters but the staff has to run plays to get them open looks with intention. Being out there they have to shoot minimum 8 3’s a game or you can’t play them. At least make it easier on the 2 studs to operate .

Pikes stuck in the middle because of poor poor roster construction. He believes his core principles of defense first will show up eventually with this roster but he built it poorly .

Hayes, since after the Kennesaw St game, in 9 games since then is 24% 3-point shooting, 5-21 from 3 ... awful.
I’m with you that players can improve, but they have to put in the work. Is Davis getting up 100,200, 500 makes a day from three to improve. It looks to me like he’s only practicing driving to the basket with his head down at full speed.

As for Derkack grossly underperforming with 43% vs 55%, could it just be the step up in comp. You can’t expect the numbers to return to what they were vs the B1G. That might be the reason for all the portal misses. Not B1G players. Shame on the staff.

You can assign minutes, but who plays with who?
(see my other post in this thread)

Agree. Martini out. Sadly, Pike won't do it.

So much of that depends on matchups. I think there are teams where JaMike's talents are needed more than others. There are games where Lathan is more equipped.

I generally like the concept of Lathan and Ogobole playing in 5 minute shifts and as far as perimeter.....JaMike gets JWill 1st and then JWill gets Harper and then Harper gets Derkakck

Williams and Ogbole off the bench. Davis and Martini out of the rotation.
Mystifying post.

1) And not only directed at this poster ... why the hate for Williams and the love for Derkack? Look, I like Derkack, and think he is better than he has shown this season. But Williams, quite simply, is better: He is a better 2-point shooter (with an actual mid-range game), a better 3-point shooter this year, a better FT shooter and a better defender. Derkack has a somewhat better ass/TO ratio (fewer TO, more assists), and is a slightly better rebounder ... but that is it.

2) Why the hate on Davis? He has been pretty darned solid the last 5 games since he was put into the starting line-up, has visibly moved his FG%, 3-point FG% and even FT% upwards the last 5 games ... is now in the last 5 games showing the on-ball defense many had been expecting ... and has a FANTASTIC assist/turnover ratio of 26 assists to just 6 turnovers ... and 27 points in the last 3 games (27 mpg) - on 9-22 FG, 4-11 3-point FG, 13 assist, 8 steals, 7 rebounds, 2 blocked shots, and ... ZERO turnovers. And NOW you say cut him out of the rotation completely?

In fact, I am not sure any RU player other than Bailey, Harper, Sommerville or Williams has had 3 consecutive games as goo as Davis' last 3 games (Williams has had 2 3-game stretches better; Sommerville has had 2-3 3-game stretches as good or better). Well, maybe Derkack has had some similar stretches also (similar offensive efficiency, more rebounds, many more turnovers, poorer overall defense). - Derkack vs Davis is a bit of trading off rebounds and FT shooting for on-ball defense and better facilitation/taking care of the ball ... and potential more offense (Derkakc should be considered to have a higher scoring ceiling, Davis a higher play-making ceiling)
