In November of 1981 I wrote a story that was on the cover of The Sentinel for local issues in Highland Park. The story spilled over to other audiences over time as it was a significant event in Title IX at that point. Amy Rosen was playing for the Boys Varsity Soccer Team at the time. She began playing in 1978 in California. Her father who was on Sabbatical from Rutgers brought Amy and her brother Todd (soon a Rutgers student) along and circumstances brought Amy and Soccer together for the first time. In 1981 in Highland Park there was much rancor when Amy was deemed a Varsity grade talent. "Title 9" provided that "if a sport is not offered for a woman at an institution where it is offered to men, then there must be a comparable alternative offered." Highland Park Athletics offered Girl's Field Hockey. Amy passed. She wanted to be on a team and evaluated as to her talents and not as to whether or not she was going to get hurt. Amy won her letter and was aspiring to play for the Princeton University women's soccer. This is timely in light of the US success at the World Cup. Title IX has contributed to our domination in Women's Soccer. Amy is a part of that story. Does anyone here in our Rutgers community know the whereabouts of Professor Rosen, Todd or Amy? I'd like to follow up.
