Christian Coppola has doubled his walks per nine inning number from last year. And it has obviously had its impact, certainly including yesterday. (The three run game-winning homer was after two walks and a 3–0 count where he tried to groove the pitch expecting a take.) What has changed? Is it a mechanics issue? Is he another victim of too many analytics Zap?

I have not watched him in person. Could be one of a number of things. Mechanics is one. Or staff could be changing his mechanics. If someone’s arm is bothering him, it changes release point and mechanics to relieve discomfort. Hopefully not that. Or the dreaded Steve Blass disease, Pirate pitcher who stopped being able to throw strikes (mental). At this point I’m sure he is pressing

Have we changed pitching coaches? Is Coppola pitching on a different day of the week this season?

Still have a problem with finding a closer and that has cost us 3-4 more wins.
