These three newcomers, one veteran and two freshmen, will be key to our success this season. Like what I’m seeing so far, gonna be a fun year.

PS: The emergence of another freshman would be nice (Camsimcholfolk?).

I need a lot more minutes to get a feel. I really need to see Spencer play against better, longer and faster competition to get a read. I feel pretty good about the chances of him really helping out on offense. In the 1st half of both the game and scrimmage he was way to unselfish (which really hurts the team). He turned down a lot of shots that quite frankly he can't. This is completely understandable coming to a new team. His on ball defense is definitely going to be an issue. He was a little slow getting out on a few shooters, but it didn't matter in this game. The steals and getting in passing lanes is great, but if he gambles too much it becomes a problem.

Simpson is a freshman. he is a willing defender and has the tools to be a good/very good/great defender, but he may not be an effective defender this year. Obviously we don't have a sample size to say whether he can shoot or not which obviously important.

Woolfolk is too early also. He did get backdowned and scored on by Columbia which is a bad sign, but am not going to read too much in to 1 possession. Is he going to be a good rebounder? Can he be a weakside shot blocker? Does he have low post moves? I need to see way more minutes. I am encouraged that Pike gave him minutes which tells me a lot about what he can do.

With the above said I didn't see anything in their games that put up a red flag which is good.

I generally agree with these takes, except the assertion that Spencer's on-ball defense is "definitely" going to be an issue.

Is there a POTENTIAL concern there? Yes. But "definitely"? I don't think we can say that after his 6-steal performance last night, in a game in which he did not get beaten off the dribble at all. Yes, I know it was just Columbia. My sole point is that we don't "definitely" know anything about Spencer's defense.

Yet.

Good analysis. My take, for all three guys, is that it’s hard (especially after seeing them play only twice) to measure their full impact by breaking down each individual aspect of their game. Something about the totality of what they give you, including the confidence they bring to the floor, really intrigues me about all three guys.

How bac can offer "expert" teatimony when no one has played other than an exhibition game shows the meaningless of these opinions.

And Hyatt looked better tonight bc of it. If Mag and Hyatt are on the court together, Mag needs to be covering the better perimeter player. It's pretty obvious that's the better defensive matchup for us

I agree with Degaz. We haven’t even seen Cam on the floor yet together with Caleb. When you have a guy like Caleb available on bail out the bar changes. We need smart perimeter defenders more than anything else and so far Cam appears to check that box. He doesn’t seem to sell out and leave people wide open for 3s - at least not so far. That was what made the Peter Kiss types before him at RU unplayable.

It's still way too early to come to conclusions. There were a few defensive possessions where he made mistakes. If he does lose his man, to your point, it is nice to have Caleb around anticipating whats happening off the ball.

Cam won't be the worst on ball defender in the starting lineup.

It was Columbia, and that is your entire sample size. Too early, too little, too easy.

re: Woofolk I thought he made 2 very, very nice moves in the paint last night (and didn't hesitate to do so, on either, IIRC).

Those moves, and his save while falling out-of-bounds that led to a fast break, are what really impressed me. His fluidity for a big is outstanding.
