After a 1916 scoreless tie, 3-2 West Virginia returned to Neilson Field and played a 4-1 Rutgers team on November 3, 1917. According to the October 30, 1917 Daily Home News, “Because of West Virginia’s showing to date the team has been tentatively selected to meet the University of California in the Carnival of Roses game at Pasadena on New Year’s Day. If Rutgers should achieve a notable victory Saturday, it is probable that the invitation may be forwarded to Rutgers instead, though it is doubtful if the Sanford eleven would accept.” Once again the two teams tied at 7 before 5,000. World War I compelled the “Rose Bowl” to host military football teams in the 1918 and 1919 New Year's Day games.

Here's to a happy, safe and prosperous New Year and 2018 to all the Rutgers and B1G fans. 8-0 in Bowl games would be a nice way for the conference to start the year.

Be warm and be safe whatever your plans.
