After the first Orange Bowl on January 1, 1935, a new stadium was planned that would be christened by the Miami Hurricanes losing to the Georgia Bulldogs on December 10, 1937 at Burdine Stadium. But according to the September 28, 1937 Daily Home News, it saw its first football game four days earlier when the Miami Edison High School Red Raiders defeated Ponce deLeon High School 36-0 before 6,000. The December 18 edition reported the previous evening, under arc-lights, the Zebras of New Brunswick High School defeated Miami Edison High School 25-0. Burdine Stadium began hosting the Orange Bowl on New Year’s Day in 1938 and changed its name to the Miami Orange Bowl in 1959. The Orange Bowl continued there until 1996 with one final game held in 1999. It was closed on January 26, 2008 and demolished on May 14.
The Zebras beat the Rutgers team to the Miami Orange Bowl by 57 years. Rutgers was 0-6 in Miami against the Hurricanes between 1993 and 2003. The 2001 game occurred when Miami was ranked first and second in the AP and Coaches Polls and was held just three days before the 9/11 terrorist attacks occurred.
The Scarlet Knights broke their losing streak against the Hurricanes on December 28, 2023 with a 31-24 victory in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium.
