2020 Rotation

Young is going to be our starting point guard and we will probably play a lot of 3 guards. Don’t forget about Duocore I think it’s a brilliant move by the staff to redshirt him this year just like they redshirted Myles Johnson last year!!

Mike Francesa once famously said, "ANDY PETTITE IS A STARTING PITCHER"

And to that I tell the fan base for the 100th time, JACOB YOUNG IS NOT A POINT GUARD

I am of the opinion that there will not be a consistent rotation but minutes will be allocated by matchups, who is playing well and who has a hot hand. When a McConnell goes off like he did against Illinois or Harper against Iowa they will get 25-30 minutes games. In close games, the players that are hitting free throws consistently will have the advantage vs. those that are erratic. I think there be 4 guard/wing sets in a lot of games and maybe 5 taking into account the length of Harper, McConnell, Mulcahy and Thiam. In certain situations, that could create huge match up problems for the opposing team on both ends for the floor.

Well, that settles it. We can all stop commenting. This dude said it and for the 100th time no less........ it must be true. Especially when in all caps.:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Why have any discussions....just wait for this guys opinion and just close the threads.

IMO, I think we are locked at 4 of the 5 position for starters and taking most minutes: Baker, Mathis, Harper, and Eugene. Likely Myles takes the 5. Bench will sort self out, between Caleb, Young, and Mulcahy at the guards/wings, and Carter in the post.

I'd say we're locked at starter at all 5 positions, with the five you just mentioned. The questions are who will be the first two guards off the bench, and how will the depth underneath work out.

There's a fair chance that Baker/Mathis/Harper take 80+ of the 120 minutes available at the 1-3, leaving <40 for Young, McConnell, Mulcahy, Kiss, and Thiam to fight over in most games.

Underneath the question will be foul trouble. Can Johnson stay on the floor without fouling? Can Doucoure? How well can Carter defend the five for longer stretches, if needed? I'd hazard a guess that Omoruyi will see 28-30 min and Johnson 24-26 most nights... which still leaves 24-28 min for Carter/Doucoure and Harper in smaller rotations (which would open some minutes up on the wing).

Been thinking about this a lot, but what is the starting lineup and rotation next year? We seem to have tremendous depth at the guard spot, but weak depth with our bigs. I think losing a body like Doorson hurts us more than some might think next year. Need Eugene to stay healthy. Here’s my best guess. Welcome any feedback.

Starters:
- C: Johnson (24 mins)
- PF: Eugene (30 mins)
- SF: Harper (25 mins)
- SG: Baker (30 mins)
- PG: Mulcahy (25 mins)

Tough to put Mathis on bench, but someone is odd man out. And here’s what I see for rest of rotation...

- C: Carter (16 mins)
- PF: Harper (5 mins)/Duke (5 mins) could see Harper getting a few mins at the 4, this is our biggest weakness
- SF: Thiam (5 mins)/Mathis (5 mins)/McConnell (5 mins); could see Mathis a few mins here if we go small
- SG: Mathis (5 mins), McConnell (5 mins)
- PG: Young (10 mins), McConnell (5 mins)

This does leave Kiss as odd man out. It’s tough enough to play 11 guys, let alone 12. Biggest concern is depth of our bigs. Also (in a good way), trying to find minutes for Baker, Mathis, Young, Mulcahy, McConell, and Kiss all at the 1-2 spot. Obviously they can go small and play 3 of those guys at once at times, but will sacrifice a bit on the boards if they do.

Putting Mathis down for a max. of 10 mpg is just nuts!. The kid is already an elite defender, and our most explosive player. If he only plays 10 minutes than Mulcahy is the next Pistol Pete Maravich!

5 Johnson
4 Eugene
backups for the 4 and 5: Harper (will get some time at the 4) Eugene (depending on the match up could be the 5 for spurts) Carter and Duke

3 Harper
backups Caleb, Montez. Kiss and Thiam will see some time and also get some DNP's

2 Montez
backups Geo, Caleb, Young

1 Geo
backups Mulcahy, Young, Caleb

Remember this preseason when several posters thought Peter Kiss would be our leading scorer? These types of threads are pointless
I remember people getting mad at me for saying Doucore would be lucky to get 5 minutes too.

I think the one thing that is certain the that Mulchahy isn’t just walking into the lineup and major minutes. This program is now past that point of anointing freshman saviors. Let’s give him two months two acclimate like happened with Mathis and Harper.

My predictions on odd men out are Kiss, Thiam, and Young, though I don’t think those are outlandish predictions. I didn’t really get why we signed Young last off-season. He’s an undersized two and we have plenty of minutes there.

Can you imagine what we could do if we wanted to full court press for long stretches of a game?

With our depth it would be like running hockey lines out every couple minutes.

You are going to be pleasantly surprised by what Young will bring to the team. He instantly becomes our QUICKEST guard, and plays outstanding on-ball defense (maybe better than Mathis), plus he is a volume scorer (albeit not a pure shooter). I don't think you can lump Young (former 4-star recruit who went to Texas) in with Kiss (former 2-star recruit who went to low-major Quinnipiac). Young will be a major part of the rotation.

Pike will have his hands full keeping everyone happy and engaged next year. It might almost be better to have Caleb redshirt but he does not seem to need it and none of the guards are graduating next year anyway so the problem doesn't go away. If they fill the last spot for next year (which I assume they will) I would certainly expect a 4-5 front court player. I have been long Duke and hopefully he rewards that confidence by playing well in a back up role at the 4-5.

That is my thought exactly
