35

The entire team plays good defense, so when 35 plays a bunch of minutes and barely shoots let alone scores we turn to “well, he played good defense!”? Cmon guys he needs to put the ball in the basket playing the 3 and getting the minutes he does. 3 points on 2 shots is not enough given the minutes he’s playing. Bottom line.

Thiam had opportunities to drive into the lane but did not take advantage of it. Needs to get that part of his game going. The Next part of his development is to improve in that area and take some mid range pullup shots.

Also....I counted at least two 3 pointers that were partly down and then popped out.

needs to play with a bit more confidence (as I said earlier)

after he decided not to shoot, you could see the coaches and the bench at the next time out looking to encourage him

he is coming along fine if you ask me. just fine. why? because he is doing all of the little things to ensure his time on the court is well spent. Look at his rebounding stats? sh!t, during the last game (prior to FSU) he was leading the team in rebounding...I know it's a small sample size given the season (at that time) was 5.5 games old...but some of the dodos in this thread don't understand basketball. or sports. or data. or facts. lol.

He has improved - defensively. Got to give him credit there.
Offensively, the scouting report is pretty basic. Find him in transition, and crowd him on the perimeter as he is ZERO threat to put it on the deck and penetrate. I've been saying since last year that Thaim needs to develop a quicker first step, then step back jump shot. If the defender is going to crowd him on the perimeter, he has to make the defender pay by drawing fouls with a jab step, quick first step.

do you have a problem saying his name or something? hes a sophomore and hes going to develop into a fine player

Really? He played tough Defense on one of FSU's top scorers by holding him way below his average and that means nothing ?

And after watching a replay of the game, Thiam actually held 2 of their top 3 scorers way below average. Guarding Mann mostly in the 1st half until he left with foul trouble and Angola for the rest of the game.

Like I said in another thread here, it was interesting last night hearing UNC-Michigan announcers putting the onus on Duncan Robinson’s teammates to get him more & better wide open 3s due to his slow release.

IMO once Thiam helped hold Mann & Angola way below their averages then all that was needed to win was for Williams, Baker, or Freeman to score more effectively.

I understand wanting Thiam to also shoot more, drive more , & score more.

You are going to have ups and downs with young players. For those who see no improvement, I disagree. When open, the shot is improved. The release point is higher and the rotation better. He is playing better defense, getting his arms in passing lanes and more active on the boards. I think he'll learn a lot from the FSU game, such as how to pump fake better or draw fouls off the fake.

I think you can tell some of the part-time hoops fans on threads like these. I guess Geo stinks too now that he had a bad game, right?

Thiam really doesn't hurt you in any area. And he has improved He has made a few moves to the basket that he couldn't have made last year. I don't think he is entirely comfortable shooting just yet. One of these nights he's going to bang in 20 with 5 threes.

Thiam did hit a big three. And it was great. But he was so alone that the sound echoed when the pass hit his hands. And that can't be situation he needs to score. We all saw from day one that Thiam had a release issue. He has a very deliberate set up once he gets the ball and then launches it from a release point that is much lower than you'd like from someone his height. That explains why he is so tentative against teams that are long and quick. He's concerned what will happen once he hits the "on" switch for that deliberate release. He's a bit like a pitcher throwing from the windup with runners on base. Soon enough--and it has already started--the teams will not all be CCNY and Cleveland State.

If Thiam is to unlock whatever potential he has as a long range shooter against tall athletic teams, he's going to have to work out that release or develop something else that will allow him to take as much time as he does before releasing the ball.

Here’s the deal with Thiam and Mike gets like this as well. When they feel they are off, they don’t want to waste possessions. Look at how close this game turned out to be but if we didn’t shoot 80% from the Line; we would have been in trouble. So I think Pikes game plan to try to slow the pace and not waste shots worked out pretty well. I would say if the refs didn’t completely blow calls including the 3 point foul on Souf, we could have won this game and FSU is clearly a better team.

Pikiell also had to deal with foul trouble and Thiam can defend so he played. I have no issues with the minutes. Eugene is really turning heads so maybe his minutes increase but when Thiam is feeling it, he can light it up.

I have zero complaints with one exception and that’s Souf. I hate getting on one of our own players but he’s hurting us out there. Let Dadika play as the extra guard unless Souf drastically improves.

Can't pinpoint which game it was, but, Issa came off a screen to the top of the 3 point line and hit a nice catch and shoot 3. That paired with him developing a faster release would be special.

Well watching Michigan State about to score 50 in the first half against #5 Notre Dame, I see Thiam playing a lot of minutes against them whether he’s making 3s or not, lol.

They’re going to be a handful.

Thiam held the opposing player to 10 points below his average. So just think of it like Thiam scored 13.

Tonight... 0-2 overall, 0-2 from 3 PT, 0 PT’s total. Don’t give me the “but he plays good defense” excuse. A kid playing the 3 needs to contribute something offensively.

Uhm, North Carolina only shot 1-18 from 3 against Michigan State. And until Freeman & Sanders start passing out for open looks it’s going to be hard.
