On June 13, 1962, after Rutgers first undefeated season (9-0-0) in the fall of 1961, head coach "Dr. John" Bateman was named “Coach of the Year” by the Washington Touchdown Club formed in 1935. He finished fifth in the Football Writers’ Association of America voting behind Darrell Royal, Murray Warmath, Bear Bryant and Buff Donelli.

I got a recruitment letter from Bateman. I was planning to visit but he got fired and Frank Burns was hired.
