And the Best Diner In NJ Is....

I don't know if it's the best Diner in the State, but the Pompton Queen Diner on Rte 23 North in Pompton P.lains is really good.
This was my go-place between the ages of 17 and 20, and sometimes even past that. Multiple late late nights per week spent there. I think I might still be 20 lbs. worth of Texas Giant...

As far as Mastoris, I never got it. For a few years, I lived a 7-iron from the place, but preferred the Town & Country across the street. Mastoris tries too hard to be too many things to too many people. Just be a diner. We did frequently stop in the lobby bakery on the way home from diner to pick up a nice desert, though. I can't deny that.

Agree -- Mastoris just tried to be too much to too many. Nothing negative about them, but not the best diner in the state. The bakery is crazy good. And I have a very fond memory of waiting in line for a couple hours a day or two after Sandy to eat there since it was the only place with power.

SHUSource my wife used to live right down the street from Mastoris at Bordentown Shire. I always wanted to go, she knew better. One time I got pancakes they were like rubber. The next time the bacon was burnt. The only time we went back after that was to pick up deserts which are quite good. I agree they try to do too much and it's not very good. Most locals around there know it.

Bacon should be burnt. Mastoris deserves "best diner in the universe" even if their pancakes are made from dog-doo just due to their warm cinnamon and cheese breads. Mmm...

The quality of mastoris has gone now significantly over the years. Even the cheese bread and cinnamon bread are bad. This is coming from a Bordentown native.
What? NOooooooooooo!

Dammit! I haven't been in a couple years and that's not the sort of news I wanted to hear.

Unfortunately the family had to bring in partners, and one of the brothers lost his share, due to the debacle they built next door. I've known the family since I was a kid, as my dad did from his childhood, due to our family's being tight from my grandfather's day, so it's real shame to see that things have gone downhill, but hopefully that will change again over the next few years.

I sure hope so. It's true that the food was never the pinnacle of great tasting food. But the breads were always amazing. And the portion size was always gigantic.

Spot-on with those statements. What "made" the diner was the location. Could not have been better, to be honest, essentially at the intersections of the NJTP/295/130/206 and then 195 when it was extended. Literally could NOT have picked a better spot than Gus Mastoris did all those years ago.

All the good diners are owned by Greeks.

Yep, three more votes for it, as Tyler, Corey and I all like to go there over any other diner within driving distance.

My wife and I had our 1st date at All-Stars. When they 1st opened. The food back than was actually quite good. Not sure what happened there as I heard it closed then reopened.

My favorite to this day is Somerset Diner on Easton Ave, followed by Empire Diner on Rt 46 in Parsippany.
@huskersalways and his son and I ate there the last day of their trip, so I was hoping someone would mention it so I could tag huskers. I used to eat there a lot back in the day, but I hadn't eaten there in many years. Two of the biggest differences I noticed right away were I wasn't absolutely hammered and it was daylight.

Assumed from its title that this thread was about one of our posters here who has a taste for comfort food in large portions washed down with a cup of joe.

Definitely a topic for one of my future threads.

Tick Tock Diner on Rt 3. It was always great after a night at the Big M as my F-I-L picked up the tab every time. Wish he had lived long enough for me to return the favor.

You know you're wrong. Seriously. Bacon should still be squealing - why the hell anyone would cook all the yummy fat out of the bacon is beyond me...

agree...there is nothing worse than crispy overcooked bacon..whats the point. You want to taste the flavor of the fat. I almost always avoid bacon at diner nowadays because they don't know how to cook it either microwaving..blech or burning it to a crisp

its not the best diner but my vote for best pancakes hands down is the Jersey City Pancake House...the peanut butter chocolate chip pancakes are simply divine[banana]

My vote for nostalgic purposes is the Blue Fountain diner in South Plainfield. Don't even know if it's still open, but there were a lot of late night runs (no not that kind) there my freshman and sophomore years. Burgers and cherry cheesecake!

Still open. Pretty sure it's called the Fountainbleu.

Easy one for me: The Somerset Diner, aka "Erik's Diner," by our group of friends from back in the Melody days, as I would always want to go there at 2-3 am after a night of drinking and dancing. Bacon cheeseburger and FF w/gravy or ham n cheese omelette with home fries. And, of course, the famous "Sweater Fish" painting, with a huge fish wearing a goofy knit sweater, swimming along, but with a thread of the yarn having just been caught on a rock, such that the sweater would've been doomed to unravel (this precedes the Weezer "Sweater Song" by many years, lol).

Burnt, blackened, crunchy, crispy. Beef should be served rare. You're obviously confused. Don't make me dial up an intervention for you.

It's time for an intervention.
So I was about to say great minds think alike, but then it occurred to me that I'm not entirely clear for whom you intend the intervention to be. RU#s the fat-muncher, or mildone the crispy consumer?

Fountainbleu (meant to be spoken w/a strong French accent) used to be half decent, and may still be for breakfast. But the last time I was there (well over a year ago now), their burgers were like thin slabs of ground up tree bark. A diner must be able to produce a good pizza-burger or it's not a diner.

Some talk highly of the Americana in east windsor. It calls itself a fine diner and the food is a bit higher quality than traditional diner fare. I like the somerset diner. I used to like the omega diner, but is no longer there i hear.

Are you referring to the Brownstone in JC? If so, completely agree - amazing pancakes of all kinds. Also, love Uncle Bill's Pancakes in OCNJ. Paging @newell138...
