And the Best Diner In NJ Is....

My wife and I had our 1st date at All-Stars. When they 1st opened. The food back than was actually quite good. Not sure what happened there as I heard it closed then reopened.

That's awesome, and I've had some good times there as well, however, it was something the family wasn't familiar with, and never should have ventured into, IMHO, and that's a shame because it did a lot more damage than anyone expected.

Blue Swan here in town or All Seasons.. PM in wall, Americana in Shrews, and Redbank Diner come in tied at my #3

So I was about to say great minds think alike, but then it occurred to me that I'm not entirely clear for whom you intend the intervention to be. RU#s the fat-muncher, or mildone the crispy consumer?
Definitely an intervention on Numbers. Crunchy People must stick together.

Easy one for me: The Somerset Diner, aka "Erik's Diner," by our group of friends from back in the Melody days, as I would always want to go there at 2-3 am after a night of drinking and dancing. Bacon cheeseburger and FF w/gravy or ham n cheese omelette with home fries. And, of course, the famous "Sweater Fish" painting, with a huge fish wearing a goofy knit sweater, swimming along, but with a thread of the yarn having just been caught on a rock, such that the sweater would've been doomed to unravel (this precedes the Weezer "Sweater Song" by many years, lol).
I still get this when I go there--pretty sure it's what I got when huskers was here.

Used to go to Americana in East Windsor with my mom, which was more of an enormous restaurant than a classic diner (but good). In my area, Summit Diner and Millburn Diner are both very good. Ritz Diner in Livingston is most overrated.

Some talk highly of the Americana in east windsor. It calls itself a fine diner and the food is a bit higher quality than traditional diner fare. I like the somerset diner. I used to like the omega diner, but is no longer there i hear.
The food at Americana is so good, it's almost a dinner in name only. But yes, this is our go to place! Definitely the best in NJ with it comes to quality.

My vote goes to Stirling House Diner in Stirling.
I just ate there last week. Good place. Not the best, but a solid go-to. Speaking of places in Stirling, have you been to the Stirling Hotel? My guess is you have. Love that place.

This list is a sham and a money grab. No quality, self respecting diner would submit their name in the. NJ.com deff takes $$$ to appear on this sham of a list.

Substance/style in this case. A quality diner lets it's product speak for itself and doesn't need the publicity.

No diner is f**king with THE.....Edison Diner.

The E-- best diner in Jersey... possibly America.

No one submitted themselves. Pete Genovese makes his own list, and allows for some input from readers, too. There was no "entering" the contest.

As long as the diner and the kitchen are clean most of the food is similar.

Most make a decent omelet, club sandwich, french fries etc.

E Hanover Diner on Rt. 10
Who remembers:
Newberry's
Two guys
Great Eastern
Art Stocks Sea Girt In...Jimmy Burns
Mothers
Pine Brook par 3 miniature golf
Pine Brook Auctions
Kresge's
Art Stock was my drafting teacher in high school.

My faves are Liberty Park Diner in JC and Tops in E. Newark. I have to give Edison Diner props for the many Mexicali omelettes that got me through grad school.

agree...there is nothing worse than crispy overcooked bacon..whats the point. You want to taste the flavor of the fat. I almost always avoid bacon at diner nowadays because they don't know how to cook it either microwaving..blech or burning it to a crisp

its not the best diner but my vote for best pancakes hands down is the Jersey City Pancake House...the peanut butter chocolate chip pancakes are simply divine[banana]

I live close, but prefer the Liberty Park Cafe to the Brownstone DIner. They do have good pancakes though.

My favorite to this day is Somerset Diner on Easton Ave, followed by Empire Diner on Rt 46 in Parsippany.

I spent a lot of time at Somerset Diner when I was at RU. I went back there with my wife a couple of years ago. I was kind of surprised at how it had changed, but of course by then it probably had been renovated two or three times since I was in school.

Have always seen it as two categories of diner. There's the diner-diner. Simple, huge menu, all done well, but not spectacular. Beauty is in their familiarity and availability. Then there is the diner that aspires to be more than just a diner. A little more gourmet, bar.

Both good, but very different.

Back in the late 70's, Mastoris was a packed Saturday night meeting place from 1:30 AM on before going home.

Im not a big fan of diners that try to be more than a diner but call themselves a diner. I went to Skylark and was unimpressed. I thought the menu was a little too ritzy for a diner. If I want to go to a diner I go to a diner, If I want to go to a more fancier restaurant I will do that. I don't like the blurrying of lines.

I don't get all the love for the Somerset Diner. I've been there many times, and it's ok, but I think the Bridgewater Diner on 22 is way better. Also, if you sit by the drink station, you get to listen to all the waitresses talk about how much they hate their boss, which is hilarious.
Oh, and one more vote for fatty bacon.

This is what I was getting at. Skylark is good, but it's not a diner imo. Feel similarly about Edison Diner. Diner needs a certain feel. Somerset has it. Rustic Mill in Cranford (where I live) has it. Sunset diner in Roselle Park has it, and gives you the option of well done home fries. Scotchwood on Rt 22 is also diner to the bone.

In my younger days, my buds and I would drive around the state, with no particular place to go, and usually end up at a diner, so I've been to a ton of them.
