Syracuse has just fired Scott Shafer.

Another big job is opened. And this can effect Rutgers in a major way.

No surprise and I expected it. Don't think it affects us either. That's not a job as good as ours. Off the top of my head, Kansas/ISU/WF/BC/Cuse are jobs not as good as ours. You can say we suck to all hell but the potential of those jobs aren't as good as our and I realize some of those even made BCS bowls when we didn't. But that's a function of coaches who did a nice job at those places, not the attractiveness of our job or theirs.

Shocking, RUs lack of foresight and need to be proactive will bite us in the ass. Ugh.

Apparently everyone else can and will fire their coach before the end of the season but RU has to be different and ultimately put itself in a worse position.

I mean, let's be honest, Cuse is a great program....they will be back.....:100points:.....(Sarcasm at 100 folks.....

We definitely should also be concerned here, let's say they hire an actual coach that could recruit the local kids or take away the pipelines to Penn State, Michigan, Michigan State etc...(double sarcasm)....

It SHOULDN'T be as good a job, but is that true in reality? What about:

* Salary, and the salaries of the assistant coaches
* Administrative support
* Financial support of the alumni
* And (both last and least) support from the media

Given those factors, I'm not sure you've concluded accurately.

If you don't think Cuse and RU are competing for the same caliber/level of coach, you are sadly mistaken.

All things being equal RU is a better job, with more upside but unfortunately Cuse will be able to pay more if they so choose to.

Have you seen Syracuse's facilities? They have a tiny little stadium that never sells out. That's a crap job, and everyone knows it.

They will likely be all be about on par at best in most cases. Support of alumni? Have you seen how many fill their stadium compared to ours? There's a reasons schools like BC/Cuse went down in stature as we slowly rose in stature just with some adequate support. As we get more B10 money that support will be greater.

I'm not saying we're the top of the totem pole, obviously not, but we're not at the bottom either. I still think they and we can get decent candidates. Like I said it's a P5 job and a P5 job can still attract mid major coaches and coordinators. That applies to them and us.

Potential Syracuse targets: Scott Frost, Lane Kiffin, Joe Moglia, Joe Moorhead, Mike Sanford & Dave Warner.
Anyone that would be interested in them would also be interested in us. It's still a P5 job so to me it still will be able to attract mid major HCs and coordinators out there. Just like we would and I think our pool would be a little bigger from which to choose.

Quick, someone email their AD to strongly encourage they hire Greg Robinson back!

Its not that we're recruiting the same coach

It's if Flood stays, we have competition for our 3 star recruits

The Carrier Dome seats 49,000 for football. HPSS seats 52,000. Their "tiny little stadium" is crappy, but it's not tiny compared to ours, and this thread is mostly comparing their job to ours.

There isn't that much difference between the two. An energetic, hungry Syracuse coach definitely can cause us problems. Don't kid yourself.

But this nonsense about how we have to fire him now to get a coach and not wait until the season is over is just silly. I'm more worried about who is doing the hiring and how much they will pay than I am what day they hire somebody.

Listen I'm not happy about this, at all, but the only way I can see this "effecting" us in a "major" way is if they hire either Golden or Schiano.

I just think if they hire the right coach, while we are stuck with the wrong one for now, will have a big impact in the near future.

Well that's a different story. I'm just commenting on potential coaching searches at both places and who each can attract.

I think too many here are traumatized by an unqualified Flood being hired as example of the best we can get as a HC. No Flood being hired was a function of TP choosing and maybe a little his need to fill the position quickly rather than conducting a proper search. It doesn't suggest anything about the attractiveness of our job to coordinators and mid major HCs out there, especially in the B10.

Their new athletic director is from Boise State and he hired Bryan Harsin to replace Peterson. Maybe he brings Harsin over to Syracuse.

There is a huge difference between SU and RU. Our stadium is tiny as well, but we have actually sold the place out on occasion, it's not falling apart, we have recruits available in the area around our school, and actual fans within driving distance. We play within driving distance of a multiple other schools in our conference, we're not located in one of the most worst climates in the country...

A good coach anywhere can cause RU problems, but SU is pretty far down on the list of schools I am most concerned about. And they are very, very far down on the list of schools I am concerned about picking a new coach over us.

Not sarcasm. They hire the right coach, we keep the wrong coach....we can become "even" again in a few years.
It's not likely our coach will be here in a few years. I think he's gone at the end of this year. I've thought that even without any investigation, just on record.

In 2013, there was a lot of chatter about him being gone even from mods and while I'm sure they all heard a lot and some of it true, I was still in see it to believe it mode. There's a difference between year 2 and year 4 IMO and now you could let him go for all the same reasons even without his Johnny English routine and whatever this 2nd investigation concludes. Add that in and it just raises the probability for me.

Worst case, say I'm wrong he's not likely to be here longer than next year unless you expect some marked jump in results which unfortunately I don't. At best, he'll be under .500 in conference again and hovering around 6 wins again. In my mind it would take at least 8 and possibly 9 wins to keep him beyond next year. The longer you're around the more evidence you have to show that you can cut it. Just on record alone now he's going to be 3 out of 4 years under .500 in conference (a big deal to me) and 2 out of 4 years under .500 overall. To me that's enough to let someone go if you want without the off the field stuff.

As someone who lives in central NY, I think Cuse's days of glory in football are well in the past. The facilities need to be replaced and there really doesn't seem to be the money available to do this. In fact, they have actually tried to get the state to help them find a new place to play which I don't think is going anywhere.
They are a basketball/Lacrosse school.

Syracuse might be a faster road to a conference championship vs the gauntlet we have to overcome. Something a potential coach might think about.

1. What are the annual donations to Syracuse football vs. donations to RU football?

2. How many Syracuse alums live within 90 minutes of the Syracuse campus? They seem to do well with respect to attendance when they play at Met Life.

3. How much ACC money are they getting between now and 2020 compared to how much B1G money Rutgers is getting. A prospective HC is likely to be at least as concerned with respect to funding between 2016 and 2020 as they are post 2020.

True 'dat! Like I've said in this thread: Golden, Schiano, Kiffen, could definitely cause us, in particular, problems due to recruiting efforts. Get another guy in here, maybe a different story, but it looks like ONLY Lane is in their sights, which is a good thing for RU, because I'm not so sure he'd go there. We'll see.

Our stadium was full because we were winning more than BC and Syracuse. WE are starting to lose like them and expect attendance to go to 25-35,000 if we don't change coaches.

I think they are trying to get Yankee Stadium to play all their home games.

A clever - innovative coach might be able to weave together a winning strategy at Syracuse more quickly than at a B1G school ... but Syracuse is likely to be a short term stop for any successful coach that might go there. Any good coach will be on their way to some place else.

I don't know can you tell me what their donations are I don't know. I don't even know what ours are for football specifically. Let me know the difference if you have links to post. I'd like to see.

Met Life? Most of the time as far as I know when they play there it's the visiting team's fans that fill most of the place not them. Cuse basketball yes they fill out MSG, Cuse football not that I've seen.

I'd be surprised if their football budget is markedly different than ours and at best on par.

As far as alums, I don't know how many live nearby but it doesn't look like many go looking at their attendance. Compare that to ours.

ACC money they have been getting that for awhile now and it's been more than us yet I don't see the better results coming from the extra money. Eventually we'll pass that by a lot. Our location is more attractive than theirs for coaching, recruiting, etc.. Like I said just look at our rise just with some adequate support vs BC/Syracuse's fall. It's not a coincidence to me.

All this being said, they could get a decent guy just like us. I've said P5 jobs aren't a dime a dozen. There are only so many and they could land someone with a decent resume. If that guy happens to be really good then they'll do better, not sure how long said coach would stick around but nonetheless there's always the possibility of landing a good one. Regardless of this though, we still are the more attractive job between the 2.

Rutgers admin had better get their heads screwed on now, otherwise Cuse will start taking our recruits. Frost and Kiffin particularly will destroy Flood in the recruiting trail.

Our stadium has been decently full for a lot of our games and attendance can always turn back around with some solid performance. I wouldn't expect a trip back to Shea times for a consistent period like some are worried about. We just need solid performance. BC has had years where they were really good or solid and I don't remember their attendance being all that great even then.

We haven't even been a great program, just solid/okay and even that was enough for BC/Cuse to go down in stature as we went up. We're in the B10 now and money won't be an issue between us and them either in the future.

Syracuses glory days are so far in the past that few people actually remember them. Plus they are in recruiting Siberia. It's not exactly a destination that is likely to excite many coaches, particularly top ones. I actually would not be shocked if they ended up having to settle for an alumni with ACC experience: Edsall. Their AD is probably smart enough to know better than to hire him, but there may not be much choice if the pickings are slim.

I don't have a link but thought it's a valid question. I'll bet it's more than what RU gets.

Met Life? Most of the time as far as I know when they play there it's the visiting team's fans that fill most of the place not them.

I don't know about that. Watching on TV it looks like they do well when they play at Met Life.

The point I was trying to make is that it's a longer trip for Syracuse alums to get to a home game than RU alums.

Short and intermediate term money will be important for a coach who may have fans who start gofundme sites to get rid of him in less than 4 years.

Like I said just look at our rise just with some adequate support vs BC/Syracuse's fall. It's not a coincidence to me.
